What is a clean room?�Cleanroom is a place where the concentration of airborneparticles is controlled to specified limits. Eliminating sub-micronairborne contamination is a process of control.

�The only way to control contamination is to control the totalenvironment. Air flow rates and direction, pressurization,temperature, humidity and specialized filtration all need to betightly controlled. And the sources of these particles need tocontrolled or eliminated whenever possible

�There is more to a clean room than air filters. Cleanrooms areplanned and manufactured using strict protocol and methods.They are frequently found in electronics, pharmaceutical,biopharmaceutical, medical device industries and other criticalmanufacturing environments.

Benefits of clean rooms in Hospitals � Hospital operating rooms are among the most infection-sensitive environments in health care facilities.

Annually, the CDC reports nearly 99,000 deaths per year resulting from health-care associatedinfections (HAIs).

� Surgical procedures increase patient vulnerability to pathogens transmitted from surgical personnel,surgical equipment, the air and a patient’s own skin flora.

� It has been estimated that airborne transmission accounts for 10% to 20% of HAIs, although morerecent studies have concluded that the role of airborne transmission may be underestimated.

� Clinical trials carried out in Britain, Europe, and the United States have confirmed that between 80%and 90% of bacterial contaminants found in the wound after surgery come from colony forming units(cfu) present in the air of the operating theatre.

� Despite advancements in surgical techniques and infection-prevention methods, two out of every 100surgeries in the U.S. result in surgical site infections (SSIs), according to the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention (CDC).

� Surgical site infections (SSI) account for 14% to 17% of all hospital-acquired infections and 38% ofnosocomial infections in surgical patients. SSI remain a substantial cause of morbidity and death, possiblybecause of the larger numbers of elderly surgical patients or those with a variety of chronic andimmunocompromising conditions, and emergence of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.

� Factors causing surgical site infection are multifarious. The rate of surgical wound infections is stronglyinfluenced by operating theatre quality.

A safe and salubrious operating theatre is an environment in which all sources of pollution and any micro-environmental alterations are kept

strictly under control.

Benefits of clean rooms in Hospitals – Types of Surgical site infectionsSurgical site infections (SSIs) are defined as infections occurring up to30 days after surgery (or up to one year after surgery in patientsreceiving implants) and affecting either the incision or deep tissue atthe operation siteThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)describes 3 types of surgical site infections:� Superficial incisional SSI. This infection occurs just in the area of the

skin where the incision was made.� Deep incisional SSI. This infection occurs beneath the incision area

in muscle and the tissues surrounding the muscles.� Organ or space SSI. This type of infection can be in any area of the

body other than skin, muscle, and surrounding tissue that wasinvolved in the surgery.
