CLICZINE # 3 AUTUMN/HYDREF 2010

Welcome to CLICzine 3, the publication for all 11 to 25-year-olds in Wales. This issue is a Skills Cymru / Battle of the Bands special, both of which are taking place at the Millennium Stadium mid-September. If you’re reading this before then, hope to see you there. If you’ve missed it, don’t worry, there is plenty of info and links about both events in the centre pages. If you would like to write for CLIC, visit www.cliconline.co.uk or email the national editor: [email protected]. You can also call us on 029 2046 2222.

CLIC IN YOUR AREACLIC is the National Information and Advice Service for Young People in Wales. All 22 counties are being consulted in developing their own local website, or updating their existing sites using the CLIC format.

These sites will all be linked, allowing you, the young people of Wales, to be able to tune in to each other’s updates. The name of the new website for young people on Anglesey was announced at Anglesey’s Children And Young People’s Festival in July as Defaid, which translated means sheep (plural!). We look forward to seeing www.defaid.com going live. For full county updates, visit www.cliconline.co.uk/en/about/clic-in-your-area

YOUNG FLINTSHIREGOES LIVE

We attended the relaunch of the Young Flintshire website at Wepre Park in Connagh’s Quay on Sunday 20 June. Hundreds of people turned up to the event and enjoyed a funfair, bands and a dog show.

There was also a youth village featuring agencies from youth support services with their displays. CLIC had a display stall and ran kendo workshops throughout the day.

Flintshire is the latest local site to join the CLIC network. Geoff Moore, the Counties Partnership Officer for CLIC, ran the workshops and said: “The event was a great success. The young people and the Children And Young People’s Partnership, along with the Youth Information Team, organised a great event.

“This partnership is really going places!”

YOUNG JOURNOS NEED APPLY

A competition entitled U-News, run by the Welsh Assembly Government in collaboration with CLIC, is encouraging you to pick up a pen, notebook, audio recorder or video camera and report on positive things. The exercise is designed to highlight the United Nations Convention On The Rights of the Child (UNCRC), and aims to tackle negative media images of children and young people while promoting the positive news that is sometimes overlooked.

News stories, reviews, photographs and other editorial contributions will then be considered for publication in U-News/CLICzine, a special celebratory newspaper that will be published later this year to mark the 21st anniversary of the UNCRC.

WHO?

In June, the Wicid.tv editorial team got the chance to meet with the Children’s Commissioner For Wales.

His name is Keith Towler, and he is an important person for us to know about.

We met at Pontypridd Library and discussed various matters of interest, and how we can work together to make sure that we know about our rights and what we can do to make a difference.

From the meeting it was clear that we agreed on many matters, and that there are a lot of opportunities for young people out there, but they are not advertised well.

We started by asking Mr Towler about our website and shamefully he hadn’t visited it. But he is a very busy man so this was understandable. But that didn’t stop us asking him more questions.

CLIC RESIDENTIAL

CLIC held a planning residential at The Urdd in Cardiff Bay in May, where young people from all over Wales gathered to share ideas on what future residentials should feature. They also planned an agenda and

workshops for the CLIC Conferences in October. But it wasn’t all work. Here’s what people had to say:

We had a long speedboat ride – we went out in the sea towardsBarry and got mega soaked because the waves were high! Thenwe went bowling and ate pizza. – Ant, Flintshire

I directed a movie featuring zombies being shot with partypoppers. – Emily, Vale Of Glamorgan

A fantastic weekend learning what CLIC is about. Meeting lotsof new people was another experience for me. I had a great time.– Amy, Wrexham

As we headed for the lock, it started to pour down with rain, but this made the experience all the more enjoyable and wild! – Beth, Anglesey

What a great weekend, I’d love to do it again in the summer! –Sam, Cardiff

VALE CREW’SPARTICIPATION RAP

Swoosh, the CLIC website for the Vale Of Glamorgan, was recently graced with the presence of some talented young people at a mini-launch of a UNCRC participation rap video. This lucky group were filmed for two days on location using the Vale’s brand new shiny V-Pod, a single decker bus spectacularly transformed and kitted out with

the latest multimedia including DJ decks, Apple computers and Playstations.

Following lots of hard work, fun and laughter, the rap was completed and aptly named Choices/Dewisiadau, and comes with a message around highlighting young people’s rights in Wales.

“I loved all of it,” says one of the rappers, Bethan. “The recording, being on location, feeling famous. The whole experience. I did really enjoy creating and writing the lyrics for the music video as well.”

Watch the rap video and read all about the V-Pod by visiting www.cliconline.co.uk and searching ‘participation rap’ and ‘v-pod.’
