 She was born on August 19th, 1883 in France.  Her mother died at a young age, and Gabrielle’s father was not able to take care of 5 children alone.  This is why Gabrielle spent 6 years in an orphanage of the Roman Catholic monastery.

The orphanhood and poverty became for Gabriel Chanel first "universities" of her life. She had great gift of the self-educated person. The family lived from hand to mouth that is why she had not opportunity to be educated.

Coco Chanel all subsequent life aspired to forget about the sad childhood, composed legends. She fought against the past, with that humiliating existence when in despair shouted to pupils of a shelter: "I am not an orphan!" When Gabrielle was 20 years old, she started working as a cabaret singer.  This is where she got her nickname, Coco.

It was based on two popular songs with which she became identified, “Ko Ko Ri Ko” and “Qui qu’a vu Coco,” The song “Ko Ko Ri Ko” was her favorite. The soldiers there called her "Coco," and she adopted the nickname.

She had many male admirers, and she became a mistress to many powerful men in the society. Because of this, Gabrielle was able to get financial aid and social connections to start a fashion business in 1913.
