Set top의 대기전력

케이블 TV 셋톱박스가 에어컨을 제외한 가전제품 중 대기전력 소비량이 가장 많은 것으로 조사됐다. 대기전력이란 전원을 꺼도 플러그를 꽂아두었을 때 소모되는 전력을 뜻한다.

17일 LA타임스에 따르면 가구당 셋톱박스 대기전력 평균 소비량은 35W(와트)에 달했다. 전기료로 환산할 때 한 달에 8달러 정도가 낭비되고 있는 셈이다.

신문은 전국 2억2400만 가구의 셋톱박스 대기전력 소비량을 합하면 대형 원자로 4개가 생산하는 전력량과 맞먹는 수준이라고 전했다.

최근 한국에서도 비슷한 조사 결과가 발표됐다. 한국전기연구원에 따르면 셋톱박스의 대기전력은 17.39W로 42인치 대형TV(0.065W)의 260배에 달했다. 이어 인터넷 모뎀(6W), 스탠드형 에어컨(5.8W), 보일러(5.8W), 오디오 스피커(5.6W), 홈시어터(5.1W), 유무선 공유기(4W), DVD(3.7W) 등 순으로 나타났다.

전기소모가 많을 것 같은 김치 냉장고의 대기전력 소비량은 불과 0.5W였다.

주기능이 아닌 백그라운드 기능만을 수행 가능한 상태

수동대기모드는 셋톱박스가 전원에 연결돼 있지만 주기능과 백그라운드 기능을 수행할 수 없는 상태.

즉, 능동대기모드는 TV를 보지 않는 상태에서도 셋톱박스를 이용해 무선 인터넷 등을 활용할 수 있지만

수동대기모드에서는 불가능하다. 수동대기모드는 셋톱박스를 끈 것과 비슷하지만 리모컨으로 켤 수 있다는 것이
