October 02 – International Day of Non-Violence

The International Day of Non-Violence is marked on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.

According to General Assembly resolution A/RES/61/271 of 15 June 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day is an occasion to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness”

International Astronomical Union names asteroid after Pandit Jasraj

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named an asteroid, discovered in 2006, after Indian classical singer Pandit Jasraj.

“Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj (b. 1930) is an exponent of Indian classical vocal music.

The asteroid, or more formally known as a minor planet, is located between Mars and Jupiter, and was discovered on November 11, 2006, by the Catalina Sky Survey, whose telescopes are based in Arizona in the United States.

The Documentation Identification Number (DIN) system of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has come into existence from with the generation of about 17,500 communications with DIN on the very first day.

The Secretary of Department of Science & Technology, Prof. Ashutosh sharma inaugurated an exhibition titled “Digital Gandhi Gyan Vigyan Exhibition”.

The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with a technology start-up under incubation by IIT, namely, M/s Vizara Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Delhi. The Department of Science & Technology has also engaged IIT Gandhinagar for organising a workshop for about 200 school children on 3rd and 4th October 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates Swachh Bharat Diwas 2019

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Swachh Bharat Diwas 2019 in Ahmedabad. He released postage stamp and silver coin to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He also distributed the Swachh Bharat Puraskar to the winners.

Inter-State portability for ration cards launched

An inter-State portability for ration cards has been launched for Rajasthan and Haryana to facilitate the distribution of foodgrains to beneficiaries of the National Food Security scheme. Labourers in the unorganised sector, migrating from one State to the other in search of work, will mainly benefit from the scheme.

While the portability for Rajasthan and Haryana had been launched, the Centre would implement it all over the country soon.

Tamil Nadu Government has issued the notification for increasing the MLAs Constituency Development Fund by an additional fifty lakh rupees. So far the ceiling for the annual expenditure under the fund by every MLA has been 2.5 crore rupees.

Now the amount has been hiked to three crore rupees.

Reserve Bank cuts repo rate by 25 basis points

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has slashed the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 5.15 per cent from 5.40 per cent with immediate effect.

Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF stands reduced to 4.90 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate to 5.40 per cent.

Indian-origin Singaporean judge joins Brunei Supreme Court

An Indian-origin Singaporean judge has been sworn in by Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah as a judicial commissioner of the Supreme Court of the sultanate.

Kannan Ramesh’s appointment is for a two-year period and the 54-year-old Justice will continue to hold his position as a full-time judge of the Supreme Court of Singapore.

India, Mexico agree to work together on multilateral issues

The fifth round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Mexico were held in New Delhi. The Indian side

was led by Secretary (East) Vijay Thakur Singh and Mexican side was led by Deputy Minister of External Affairs of

The two sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation, including political, trade and economic

Portugal’s Socialists win election

India is home to Asia’s oldest bamboo

An international team of researchers found two fossil compressions or impressions of bamboo culms (stems) and

after further study noted them to be new species.

They were named Bambusiculmus tirapensis and B. makumensis – as they were found in the Tirap mine of Makum

Coalfield in Assam. These belonged to the late Oligocene period of about 25 million years ago.

India’s Vishnu Nandan among 300 researchers to join largest ever Arctic expedition

The 32-year-old polar researcher from Kerala Vishnu Nandan will be the only Indian aboard the multidisciplinary

drifting observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition.

One half of the award was given to James Peebles for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology and the other

Cabinet doubles honorarium for Asha workers

Union Cabinet has doubled honorarium for ten lakh ASHA workers from the existing 1000 rupees to 2000 rupees

per month. Briefing media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash

Javadekar said the government has also decided to provide other benefits to ASHA workers in addition to the hike

in their monthly honorarium.

Javadekar said the government will open 40,000 wellness centres across the country this year under Ayushman

Bharat Scheme.

The government launched a device that will help provide information related to disaster warnings when fishermen

move away from the coast beyond 10 to 12 kilometres

After unveiling the device in New Delhi, Science and Technology Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said satellite-based

India – Bangladesh Navies Undertake Coordinated Patrol in North Bay of Bengal

The second edition of Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) of the navies of India and Bangladesh commenced in Northern

Bay of Bengal on Thursday.

Indian Navy said guided-missile destroyer INS Ranvijay and ingeniously built missile Corvette INS Kuthar are

participating in the exercise along with BNS Ali Haider, and BNS Shadinota from Bangladesh. The two-day patrol

will be followed by the maiden edition of Bilateral Exercise of the navies of two countries at Visakhapatnam

between October 12-16.

The India Bangladesh CORPAT commenced in 2018. The exercise aims at development of mutual communication

and sharing of best practices between the two navies.

India offers help in rescue operation for Typhoon hit Japan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in Japan due to Typhoon Hagibis and said

Indian Navy personnel, who were on a scheduled visit there, will be happy to assist in rescue operations.

Typhoon Hagibis made landfall in the South of Tokyo and moved towards North, triggering severe floods. It has left

at least 33 people dead and more than a dozen missing.

2019 Nobel Prize for Economics

The 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics has been jointly won by Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee, his wife, Esther

Duflo, and Michael Kremer of the United States for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.

58-year-old Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee was educated at the University of Calcutta, Jawaharlal Nehru University and

Harvard University, where he received his PhD in 1988.

He is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of

Technology. In 2003 he founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), along with Esther Duflo and

Sendhil Mullainathan, and he remains one of the lab’s directors.

IMF cuts World and India growth rates

The World Bank-International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meetings kicked off owith the IMF downgrading global

growth in 2019 to 3%, the slowest since the global financial crisis.

India’s growth projections have also been downgraded to 6.1% and 7.0% in 2019 and 2020 respectively, down by

1.2 percentage points and 0.5 percentage points relative to April projections, owing to weaker than expected

domestic demand.

Shri Arjun Munda, Union Minister of Tribal Affair announced the second phase of GOAL (Going Online as Leaders), a

Facebook program aimed at inspiring, guiding and encouraging tribal girls from across India to become village-level

digital young leaders for their communities.

Launched earlier this year in March, GOAL connects underprivileged young tribal women with senior expert

mentors in the areas of business, fashion and arts to learn digital and life skills.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has launched a scheme called ‘YSR Navodayam’. The scheme aims to bail out micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the State and provide them financial relief by restructuring their bank loans before March 31, 2020.

Under the scheme, about 80,0000 MSMEs in the State would be benefited as their bank loans, that are subject to a ceiling of Rs 25 crores, would be restructured.

Most advanced Electronic Interlocking System has been installed on the Grand Chord route. The measure is

expected to help Indian Railways speed up trains and to achieve its future objective of reducing the travel time

between Delhi and Howrah to about 12 hours from the existing 17-19 hours.

Grand Chord is part of the Howrah-Gaya-Delhi line and Howrah-Allahabad-Mumbai line. This new Electronic

IAF fires two BrahMos missiles at Trak Island in Andaman Nicobar

Praveen Kumar today became the first Indian man to win a Wushu World Championships gold, beating Russel Diaz

event of the 15th World Wushu Championships.

Among other Indians in the fray, Poonam (women’s 75kg) and Sanathoi Devi (women’s 52kg) secured silver medals

championship in event with a gold, two silvers and a bronze.

The Government of India, Government of Odisha and the World Bank signed a US$165 million loan agreement to

support smallholder farmers strengthen the resilience of their production systems as well as diversify and improve

The Odisha Integrated Irrigation Project for Climate Resilient Agriculture will be implemented in rural areas

vulnerable to droughts and largely dependent on rainfed agriculture. It will benefit about 125,000 smallholder

farmer households from 15 districts of Odisha managing 128,000 ha of agricultural land.

Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Health & Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan said that the

whole genome data will be important for building the knowhow, baseline data and indigenous capacity in the

emerging area of Precision Medicine.

The IndiGen initiative was undertaken by CSIR in April 2019, which was implemented by the CSIR-Institute of

Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi and CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB),

The US Department of State said the United States would ban US airlines from flying to all Cuban international

Indo-French Joint Exercise Shakti-2019

Series of ‘Exercise SHAKTI’ between India and France commenced in year 2011. Its a biennial exercise and is

conducted alternately in India and France. As part of Exercise SHAKTI – 2019, French Army troops arrived in India

on 26 October 2019 for training with Indian Troops.

The bilateral training exercise will be conducted at Foreign Training Node at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges,

Rajasthan. A contingent of the Sikh Regiment of Sapta Shakti Command will represent Indian Army in this exercise.

The French Army delegation will be represented by troops of 21stMarine Infantry Regiment of 6th Armoured

Brigade. The bilateral exercise will be conducted from 31 October 2019 to 13 November 2019.

In cricket, Bangladesh Test and T20 Captain Shakib Al Hasan has been banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) from all cricket for two years. One year of the punishment has been suspended after he accepted three charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. This was announced today in a press release issued by the ICC.

India’s leading squash player Joshna Chinappa crashed out in the pre-quarterfinals of the CIB PSA Women’s World Championship after a straight game defeat to top seed Nour El Sherbini of Egypt 0-3 in the pre-quarter finals.

National Unity Day

National Unity day (also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) is celebrated every year on 31st of October by the people

all through India. It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who really

unified the country. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day was introduced by the Government of India in 2014

with the aim of celebrating this event every year on 31st October.

The aim of introducing this event is to pay tribute to the great man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth

anniversary by remembering his extraordinary works for the country. He really worked hard in keeping India

united.

New UTs Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh come into existence

Radha Krishna Mathur took oath as the first Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. He was administered the oath of office

by the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Justice Gitta Mittal at a function held at Sindhu Sanskriti Kendra in Leh. Girish

Chandra Murmu has been appointed as the first Lieutenant Governor of the J&K Union Territory. The two new

Governors would be replacing Satya Pal Malik, who served as the 13th and last Governor of the state of Jammu and

Kashmir.

The State of Jammu and Kashmir ceased to exist at 30 October in line with The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation

Act, 2019. The two Union Territories came into existence following the August 5th decision of Parliament to

bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir.

Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare released the 14thNational Health Profile (NHP)2019

& its e-book (digital version). The NHP is prepared by the Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CBHI) and covers

comprehensive information on demographic, socio-economic health status, health finance indicators, health

infrastructure and health of human resources in the country. This 14th edition of NHP is the continuation of the

publication since 2005.

3rd edition of Guwahati International Film Festival

In Assam, the third edition of the Guwahati International Film Festival was inaugurated by Chief Minister

Sarbananda Sonowal in the presence of noted filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar in Guwahati.

Iran is the focus country in this edition of the film festival. Acclaimed Iranian film “Charcoal” will be showcased

during the inaugural ceremony. The categories of movies to be showcased during the week-long fest include 150

years of Gandhi, a retro of Zanussi, North East Kaleidoscope among others.

Argentina’s 2019 Election Brings in a New President

Peronists Alberto Fernández, along with running mate and former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, won

the first round on October 27 with 48 percent of the vote. Center-right President Mauricio Macri earned 40 percent

Sharjah International Book Fair 2019

The 38th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) 2019 was inaugurated by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin

Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. Nearly 1800 exhibitors from 77 countries

are participating in the Fair. The fair will showcase 987 activities presenting scientific, knowledge and literary

themes.

Cyclone “MAHA”

A meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, Shri Rajiv

Gauba, was held to review the preparations for the cyclone MAHA over the Comorin and adjoining Lakshadweep

Islands.

IMD informed that the Depression that had developed in the Comorin Sea, has now intensified into a Cyclonic

storm. It is likely to cross Lakshadweep Islands by the noon of 31st October 2019 as a Severe Cyclonic Storm and

emerge thereafter into the east Central Arabian Sea.

India’s marine exports to China heading for USD 1 billion mark

India’s exports of marine products to China has tripled and touched almost USD 800 million, in the first nine

months of 2019, as per the data released by China’s customs authority recently. India’s marine exports are expected

to cross USD 1 billion mark by the end of this year. A Chinese trade delegation visited India on 9th October 2019

and signed a contract for import of marine products worth USD 500 million in the next two years.

2nd Assembly of International Solar Alliance (ISA)

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy hosted the second Assembly of International Solar Alliance (ISA) on 30

and 31 October 2019 New Delhi. While on 30 October 2019, coordination and consultation meetings on different

aspects of ISA programmes and initiatives was held.

The Assembly is the supreme decision making body of the ISA, and gives directions on various administrative,

financial and programme related issues. The first Assembly of the ISA was attended by 78 countries in 2018, and

they had affirmed their determination to accelerate the deployment of solar energy worldwide for achieving

universal energy access at affordable rates.

The 28th Vyas Samman for the year 2018 was conferred on well known Hindi writer Leeladhar Jagoori at a function

in New Delhi. Mr Jagoori has been chosen for the prestigious award for his poetry collection- Jitne Log Utne Prem.

The Vyas Samman, started in 1991, is given by K K Birla Foundation for an outstanding literary work in Hindi

authored by an Indian citizen published during the last 10 years.

Oman Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Open

India’s Swastika Ghosh and Kavya Sree Baskar have secured bronze medals in the Oman Junior and Cadet Table

Tennis Open in Muscat. Swastika lost to Yi-Chen Hsu of Chinese Taipei 1-4 to settle for the bronze medal. Kavya

Sree lost 1-3 against eventual champion Pu-Syuan Cheng of Taipei in the Cadet Singles to be content with the

bronze medal.

U-23 World Wrestling Championship

At the Under-23 World Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Indian grappler Ravinder settled for a silver medal

after going down to Kyrgyzstan’s Ulukbek Zholdoshbekov in the final. He suffered a 3-5 loss to Ulukbek in 61-kg

category. Ulukbek is the current Asian U23 champion. This was India’s first medal at the 2019 edition and overall

fifth silver at the Championships.
