WISH +SUBJUNCTIVE, OTHER VERBS

The last time we used WISH with the verb to BE to talk about things which we want but which are not possible. WE USE WISH +PAST , WE TALK ABOUT OUR WISH IN THE PRESENT.

Now we are going to use it with other verbs to refer a different actions. e.g. I wish Martin went to the exhibition. Solve page 20 from your Pathway to Grammar.

Exclamatory form

An exclamatory sentence is used to express a strong emotion. It starts with a “How” or a “What” and ends with an exclamation mark (!). To form an exclamatory 'what' sentence with a singular noun, use the form:

'What a(n) [adjective] [noun]!'

e.g. What an awful fever he has! Wrtie 6 sentences using exclamatory form and read them aloud. Write 3 times and illustrate the following verbs on your use of English notebook verbs appendix:

CAUSATIVE FORM

A Causative Form is used to show that someone assigns something to someone else. To form the

Causative, we use the verb have in the correct tense. The object goes second, the past participle of the

main verb goes third.

Open your level F to support the subject on page 74.

FORMULA ( the verb have)

HAVE + OBJECT + PAST PARTICIPLE (HAVE SOMETHING DONE)

e.g

I have my house clean. ( present simple ) I have my mug wash.(present simple) I had my house cleaned yesterday. (past simple)

Direct and Indirect Speech

Reported speech is when we tell someone what another person said. To do this, we can use direct speech

or indirect speech.

direct speech: 'I work in a bank,' said Daniel. indirect speech: Daniel said that he worked in a bank.

In indirect speech, we often use a tense which is 'further back' in the past (e.g. worked) than the tense

originally used (e.g. work). This is called 'backshift'. We also may need to change other words that

were used, for example pronouns.

Present simple, present continuous and present perfect

When we backshift, present simple changes to past simple, present continuous changes to past continuous and present perfect changes to past perfect.

e.g.

Indiect Speech Questions

These general rules for reported speech also apply. 1. When we report questions, the subject comes before the verb.

Direct speech: “Where are you going?” Reported speech: He asked me where I was going. When reporting questions we don’t use the

auxiliary verb do, except in negative questions. We report yes/no questions with if or whether.

Direct speech: “Do you want me to come?”

Reported speech: I asked him if he wanted me to come.

When we report questions with who, what or which + to be + object, the verb be can come before or after the object.

Direct speech: “Who is the champion?”

Reported speech: She asked me who the champion was / She asked me who was the champion.
