The Orange County Performing Arts Center Celebratory GalaWhilebestknownforlarge-areasceneryandwashlighting,ColorBlazecanbeeasilyconfiguredtodisplayspectacularvideoeffectsonmultipleindividuallycontrollablesegments.Suchwastheapproachofthedesignershiredin2006tocreatealightingschemeforthegalacelebratingthe20thanniversaryseasonoftheOrangeCountyPerformingArtsCenterandtheopeningofitsworld-classSegerstromConcertHall.

Thelightingschemeincorporatedbothdirect-viewvideoelementsandcomplementarywall-washingeffects.Thedirectvideolightingdisplay,mountedinverticalarraysagainstthevenue’sbackwall,includedcascadingwaterfallimageryandaspectacularsunseteffect,streamedtoColorBlazefixturesviaVideoSystemManager(VSM).

Thedesignalsocalledformorethan45ColorBlaze72fixturesalongthewallsofthetentinwhichthegalawasheld.NotonlyweretheseColorBlazefixturesusedtoprojectbold,saturatedcolorsagainstthewhiteinteriorsurfacesofthetent,theywerealsousedtoprojectdigitalvideocontent,streamedfromtheVSM,thatsuggestedflowingmovementstocoincidewiththedirect-viewdisplay.

Theentireprojectrequiredonly30daysfromconcepttocompletion.Becauseofthefixtures’easeofconfigurationandinstallation,thelightingsetupitselfwasdonevirtuallyovernight.

The DeVos Performance Hall RenovationThesummer2004renovationofDeVosPerformanceHall—a2,400-seatperformingartstheatreinGrandRapids,Michigan—showcasesColorBlazeinalandmarkarchitecturalsetting.

Theextensiveinternalrenovationsofthispopulartheatre,hometotheGrandRapidsSymphony,theGrandRapidsBalletCompany,BroadwayTheatreGuild,andmanytouringconcertsandfamilyshows,calledforcolorfulaccentlightingtoenliventhetheatre’ssidewalls.

Thelightingschemewasintendedtogivenewlifetothepreviouslygrayperimeterwalls,whichreachaheightof60ft(18m).Theownersdesiredanewlookthatwouldnotsimplyaccentuatethewalls,butthatwouldactuallychangetheperceptionoftheaudiencespace.Thenewtreatmenthadtobelarge-scale,readytobuild,easytomaintain,andcost-effective.Therenovationshadtobecompletedwithin90dayssoasnottointerferewiththeexistingproductionandperformanceschedule.

Approximately44ColorBlaze72fixturesweremountedtotheceilinginlinearrunsalongeachperimeterwalltouniformlywashtheirsurfaceswithsaturatedstaticcolorandsubtle,dynamicsequences.Theownersplacedahighvalueoncolor-changinglighting,becausethehallisusedformanydifferenttypesofproductions,fromoperaandballettopop/rockacts.Thedynamicsequencesincludesubtletwo-colorfades—orangetoamberandbluetoviolet,forexample—androllingrainbows

Theeffectsareeasilytriggeredbyasimplepresetrecallpanelinthecontrolroom.LightingboardoperatorscanalsodrivetheColorBlazefixturesthroughthetheatre’sDMXcontrolconsole.

InstallationColorBlazefixtureshaveintegratedpowersuppliesandpushbuttonaddressingcontrolslocatedonthebackofthefixturehousing.Fortheatricalinstallationswherefixturesarereadilyaccessible,youtypicallymountColorBlazefixturesfirst,thenaddressandconfigurethemasnecessary.Forpermanentinstallationswithdynamiceffects,youmayfinditconvenienttoconfigureandaddressyourfixturesfirst,inastagingareawherethefixturesareeasilyaccessible.Forexample,werecommendconfiguringandaddressingColorBlazefixturesbeforeinstallingtheminarchitecturalapplicationswherethefixtureswillbemountedpermanentlyagainstflatsurfaces,inniches,orinotherareasthatmaybedifficulttoaccess.

Tocreatealightingdesignplan,determinetheappropriatelocationofeachColorBlazefixtureinrelationtopowersourcesandcontrollers.Onanarchitecturaldiagramorotherdiagramthatshowsthephysicallayoutoftheinstallation,identifythelocationsofallcontrollers,fixtures,powersources,andcables.Tostreamlineinstallationandaidinlightshowprogramming,youcanaffixalabelidentifyingtheorderorplacementintheinstallationtoaninconspicuouslocationoneachColorBlazefixture’shousing.

Keepthefollowingconsiderationsinmindwhenplanningyourinstallation:

• Theintegrated,auto-switchingpowersupplyautomaticallyadjuststoany 50/60Hzpowersourcefrom110–240V.EachColorBlazefixtureincludesa6ft(1.8m)detachablecablewithastandardIECconnectorandflyingleads.Youmustconnectthecable’sflyingleadstoa3-wireplugappropriateforyourgeographiclocation.

• YoucanconnectColorBlazefixturesinseriesusinganycombinationofRJ45,Ethercon,andXLR-5datacables.

• ColorBlazefixturescanworkasasingleunit,oryoucansetfixturestohavemultiplesegmentsthatdisplaydifferentcolorssimultaneouslyfordynamiceffects.Segmentlengthsdifferdependingonfixturelengthandconfiguration.Wheninstallingfixturesend-to-end,youcancreatevirtualsegmentsthatspanmultiplefixtures.

• YoucanmixColorBlaze48andColorBlaze72fixturesinasinglerun.Amixtureoffixturelengthscanofferflexibilityinarchitecturalapplicationswhereyouneedtoinstallfixturesaroundcornersorinconfinedareas.

• YoucanmountColorBlazefixturesend-to-end,oryoucanspacethemhoweveryouwish,solongasthemaximumdistancefromacontrollertothelastfixtureinaseriesdoesnotexceed1000ft(300m)withoutaDMXrepeater.

• Eachseriesoffixturescanuseupto512uniqueDMXaddresses.Sinceeachfixturesegmentrequiresthreeaddresses,youcanhaveupto170uniquelyaddressedsegmentswithinasingleseries.Forexample,youcouldcreateaseries

Connect the Power Cable PlugColorBlazehasintegrated,auto-switchingpowersuppliesthatautomaticallyadjusttoany50/60Hzpowersourcefrom110–240V.ColorBlazefixturesareconnecteddirectlytolinepowerusingtheincluded6ft(1.8m)detachablepowercable.Youmustconnectthecable’sflyingleadstoanappropriate3-wireplug.

1. Unpackthefixture,andplaceitinastagingareaorotherlocationwherethecontrolsonthebackofthefixturehousingareeasilyaccessible.

2. Installa2-pole,3-wire,grounded,15Aplugtotheincludedpowercable.Followingtheplugmanufacturer’sinstructions,ground(earth),toline,andneutral.

3. ConnectthepowercabletotheIECinletonthebackoftheColorBlazehousing.

4. TightenthescrewontheIECinlettoholdthepowercableinplace.

Set Fixture SegmentsMakesurethepowerisONbeforeaddressingandconfiguringfixturesbyplugginginthefixture’spowercable.

Toallowafinelevelofcontrolforlightshowswithdynamiceffects,ColorBlazefixturescanbeconfiguredtohavemultipleindividuallyaddressablegroupsoffixturesegments:1,2,4,or8forColorBlaze48,or1,2,3,4,6,or12forColorBlaze72.Yousetthefixture’sstartDMXchannel(address),andtheonboardcontrolsautomaticallyassignuniqueDMXaddressestoeachsegment.

EachColorBlazefixtureisfactory-addressedtohave4groupsandastartingDMXchannelof1.Forlightshowdesignsdisplayingstaticeffects,nochangestothefactory-defaultsettingsarenecessary.However,iffixtureswerepreviouslyconfiguredforuseinotherinstallations,youmayhavetoresetthem.Forlightshowdesignswithdynamiceffects,youmayneedtosetthenumberofgroupseachfixturewillhave.

TosetthenumberofgroupsforaColorBlazefixture:

1. IntheNUMBEROFGROUPSsectiononthebackofthefixturehousing,pressthe+and-buttonstoscrollthroughtheoptions:1,2,4,orA(8)forColorBlaze48,or1,2,3,4,6,orA(12)forColorBlaze72.

2. Forcomplexinstallationswhereyousetdifferentnumbersofgroupsondifferentfixtures,it’sgoodpracticetonotateeachfixture’sgroupsettingonthelightingdesignplan.

E If you use a cable other than the included IEC power cable, make sure that the cable is equivalent in size and rating, and that it meets local standards. Ensure that the plug on the power cable can be held securely in place by the IEC inlet locking mechanism, which is designed for a C13 plug.

E You can test a ColorBlaze f ixture by pressing and holding the TEST button. If the f ixture is working properly, each group of LEDs (8 for ColorBlaze 48, 12 for ColorBlaze 72) will briefly illuminate in sequence.

• Asthetableshows,youcanmixColorBlaze48andColorBlaze72fixturesinthesameserieswhilemaintainingconsistentsegmentlengthsof2feet,1foot,or.5feet.

• Ifyouinstallfixturesofthesamelengthendtoend,youcancreatevirtualsegmentsthatspanmultiplefixtures.Forexample,youcancreatevirtual9ftsegmentswithColorBlaze72fixturesbyalternating1-segmentand2-segmentfixtures.

Tosetafixture’sDMXstartchannel:

1. IntheDMXSTARTCHANNELsectiononthebackofthefixturehousing,pressthe+and-buttonstoscrollthroughallavailableDMXaddresses(1–512).

2. Ifyou’reenablingdynamiceffectsbysettingdifferentDMXstartingchannelsforeachfixtureinaseries,youcanstreamlineconfigurationandlightshowprogrammingbynotatingtheDMXstartingchannelofeachfixturesegmentonthelightingdesignplan.

Keepthefollowingconsiderationsinmindwhenaddressingyourfixtures:

• ColorBlazeonboardaddressingautomaticallyassignsconsecutiveDMXaddressestothefixture’ssegments,startingwiththechannelyouset.EachsegmentreceivesthreeDMXaddresses,oneforred,oneforblue,andoneforgreen.ThefollowingexampleshowsthestartingDMXaddressesforallfixturesegmentswhenthestartingDMXaddressissetto1.

• Withthebackofthefixturehousingtowardyou,segmentsextendinsequencefromtheleftofthefixturetotheright.

• MakesurethattheDMXstartchannelallowsenoughDMXaddressesforallofthefixture’ssegments,orthefixturewillnotfunctionproperly.Forexample,afixturewith4groupsrequires12DMXaddresses,3persegment.Therefore,theDMXstartchannelshouldbe501orlower.

• Forlightshowswithdynamiceffects,setstartchannelssothateachfixtureinaseriesreceivesauniquesetofDMXaddresses.Forexample,inaseriesof3fixtures,eachwith4groups,youcanensurethateachfixtureisuniquelyaddressedbysettingthestartchannelofthefirstfixtureto1,thestartchannelofthesecondfixtureto13(1+12),andthestartchannelofthethirdfixtureto25(13+12).

Mount the Fixtures ColorBlazefixturescomewithattachedmountingbracketsdesignedfor.5inmountinghardware.FixturescanbemountedtoasurfaceortoapipeortrusswithstandardpipeclampsorCheeseboroughclamps.Ifyourinstallationcallsforspecialmounting,youcanreplacetheincludedmountingbracketswithseparatelyavailableT-handlemountingbrackets.

1. Verifythatallsupportingequipment(controllers,connectionstopowersources)isinplace.ColorBlazefixturesareintendedtoplugintolinepowerusingtheincluded6ft(1.8m)detachableIECpowercable.

2. Mountfixturesasdictatedbylocal,state,ornationalcodes.Consultastructuralengineerorsafetyprofessionaltoensurepropermounting.

3. EachColorBlazefixtureisdesignedforusewithoneormoresafetycablestotetherthefixturetoasecureanchorpoint.WhensuspendingorinstallingColorBlazefixturesoverhead,orwhendictatedbylocalorstatecodeoradvisedbyastructuralengineer,loopsafetycablesthroughoneorbothoftherestrainingholeslocatedattheeitherendoftheColorBlazehousing.Securelyanchorthesafetycablesusingamethodthatfollowscodeorengineer’srequirements.

Cleaning the ColorBlaze Housing and Air Intake FilterColorBlazehasatemperaturemonitoringfeaturethatprotectsthefixturefromextremetemperatures.Iftheoperatingtemperaturerisestoanunsafelevel,thelightsdimtoadullred.After30minutes,thelightsautomaticallyreturntofullintensityandresumenormaloperation.

Foradditionalheatprotection,ColorBlazefeaturesanonboardfan.Atelevatedambienttemperatures,thefanengagesathalfspeed.Iftheambienttemperaturecontinuestorise,thefanrunsatfullspeed.

Tohelppreventoverheating,werecommendthatyouinspectandcleantheColorBlazehousingandairintakefilterregularly.

E Connections between ColorBlaze f ixtures are not connector-specif ic. You can use any combination of XLR-5, Ethercon, and RJ45 inputs and outputs.

E Do not look directly into the fixture when aiming and locking.


1. Disconnectpowertothefixture.NeverattempttocleanorserviceColorBlazewiththepowerconnected.

2. Rotatethefixturetoaccessthesidesofthefixturehousing.Inspecttheheatfins,andmakesuretheyarefreeofdebrisandheavydust.

3. Rotatethefixturetoaccessthebackofthehousing,andlocatetheairfilterintakesoneitherend.

4. Removethefourscrewsthatholdthefilterinplace.Removethefilter,takingcaretopreventthescrewsorwashersfromfallingintotheairintake.

5. Cleanthefilterwithwater,anddryitthoroughly.

6. Replacethefilter,ensuringthatthegasketandwashersarepositionedproperly.


Cleaning ColorBlaze LensesYoucanremoveandcleanColorBlazelenseswithoutremovingthemountinghandlesoropeningthefixture’shousing.

1. Removetheretainingscrewsalongtopedgeofhousing.ColorBlaze48hasfivescrews,andColorBlaze72hassix.

3. Cleanthelenswithwaterandmilddetergentusingasoftcleaningcloth.Wipethelensdry. Cleanthelenswithwaterandmilddetergentusingasoftcleaningcloth,andwipedry.Becausetheywillscratch,soften,pit,haze,yellow,mar,orcrackthelens,donotusepapertowels,abrasivecleaningproducts,windowcleaners,orcleaningsolutionscontainingchemicalssuchasammonia,sodiumhydroxide,andisopropylalcohol.

4. Replacethelens,andsecureitbyreplacingtheremovedscrews.
