Scientist have found another moon!
Scientists recently discovered a small planet, that they believe has been going around Earth for at least a century. In reality, 2016 H03, as it has been named, is not a moon, but “quasi-moon" because it actually orbits around the sun, not the Earth! But its path is so close to the Earth that it always stays pretty close to our planet! It’s almost as if the earth and 2016 H03 are dancing with one another!

The very first sewage treatment plant in Cambodia has just started operating in Phnom Penh. Over the past 2 years, more than 150 workers,
including engineers and chemists, have been hard at work building this very important treatment system.
What is sewage treatment?When you flush your toilet, wash your hands or clean the dishes, you produce “waste water” or “sewage”. Currently, in Cambodia, the sewage passes from the pipes in your house to the drainage system over or under the ground, and then it flows directly into the lakes and rivers. This creates a lot of pollution in our waterways!

natural water cycle.
Now we use so much water,
and it becomes so polluted that we have the treatment plants,
to give mother nature a hand!

Grease treatment – The water then goes into a large tank to get rid of any grease: oil is lighter than water, so it floats to the top, while grit and sand are heavier and sink to the bottom.

Screening – The first stage is like a big prahok drainer. It filters large objects that should not be in the water: bottles, diapers, sanitary wipes, etc.
ការដរង៖ – ណៅដំោក់កាលដំបូង ណគណម្បើឧបករណ៍មួយដូចជាម្បោប់ម្តងម្ប�ុកដ៏ធំមួយអញឹ្ង។ វម្តងរបស់ដដលមិនគួររានណៅក្ុងទឹក ដូចជា៖ដប ម្កោត់កន្បទារក ម្កោសស្វិតជាណដើម។
Settling tank – At this stage, there is a muddy substance called sludge which settles at the bottom of the tank. It is drained out and dried out so that farmers can use it to fertilize their crops!
ធុងរកសាទុក៖ – ណៅដំោក់កាលណនះេក់ក៏កករណៅដផ្កខាងណម្កាមអាងណនះ។ ណគអាចយកេក់ណនាះណចញមកណម្រៅណ�ើយទុក ឲ្យស្ួត ដូណច្ះកសិករអាចណម្បើវណដើម្ីជាជីសម្រាប់ដំោំរបស់ពួកណគ!
Aeration – This is the most important stage: oxygen is injected using turbines on the surface of the water, kind of like the pump in a fish tank! This makes sure that bacteria, which love to eat the organic matter in the sewage, can breathe and reproduce. They eat all the carbon and reduce the amount of phosphorous and nitrogen that pollute the water.

Why is it important to treat waste water?
When a new building is built, especially if it is a very big one in which lots of waste water will be produced, it is important to think about how to treat the sewage so that waste water does not end up contaminating nature. When the decision was made to expand the airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap so that more passengers can travel every year, it was also decided to build sewage treatment plants for each airport: what a relief for the environment!For each airport, a reservoir with a capacity of 2,700m3 has been built to treat the equivalent of an Olympic swimming pool of water that is discharged every day in the system! • Little Scientists visited the treatment plant to find out how it works.

Even though it is not drinkable, the water is now clean and can be poured into the local wa-ter network without polluting it, or it can even be re-used in the fields to water our vegetables!

How does a sewage treatment plant work?
This experiment shows us the first stage of wastewater treatment: • the physical process of removing impurities of different sizes and • the chemical process of removing dissolved particles
What you will need: • Cotton wool • Sand • Charcoal that has been ground into powder form• Gravel • An empty plastic water bottle (ask an adult to cut in half for you) • Dirty water (for example water in which you have mixed instant coffee, flour, leaves, or pieces of charcoal)
What to do: • Place the top part of the cut bottle upside down inside the bottom part. Start by layering the cotton wool, ground charcoal, sand, and then the gravel in the upper section of your filtration system (see the picture). • Pour your dirty water into the top of your filtration system and observe the filtration process.
This experiment demonstrates that impurities in dirty water can be removed by either physical barriers (filtration by gravel and sand) or chemical barriers (absorption using powdered charcoal).
But wait! Don’t drink this filtered water! This type of treatment is not effective on micro-organisms. Can you think what could work well instead?

Sen Sokhom, chemistLS: What is your job here at the treatment plant? Sokhom: Every day I collect water from the different tanks. Then I do some tests to check the chemical levels, such as the levels of phos-phate, ammonia, and nitrogen. If the levels are not right, I inform the team and they make any necessary changes. For example, if there is too much nitrogen in the water, it means that more oxygen needs to be added to the aeration tank, so the team will turn on the turbines again. “We did this interesting and fun experiment to look at sugar water density. We mixed different amounts of sugar in different cups of water in which we put water that was coloured with food colouring. Then we carefully transferred the different water samples into a bottle using a pipet. We saw that the water with the most sugar (red) lay at the bottom while the water with the least sugar (blue) floated on top!”
