All programs set quota limitations on the number of admission
offers to be made in any given term. Enrollment quotas insure
that all students at NEC are eligible for maximum participation
in all curricular offerings and per formance venues. Each appli-
cant is considered for admission based on a competitive review
of his/her audition results, overall academic history, artistic
preparation, and letters of recommendation. Written notification
regarding admission status (i.e., admit, wait-list, deny) is mailed
to all applicants who have completed the audition and submit-
ted all required suppor ting material. Admitted students are
given thirty (30) days to notify NEC regarding their acceptance
of the offer of admission and intention to enroll at NEC. A
tuition deposit (non-refundable) of $500 (U.S. dollars) is
required to hold a place in the incoming class and maintain any
offer of financial aid. Any of fer of admission by NEC is consid-
ered conditional until all required of ficial paperwork, including
final transcripts with grades and degree posting (as applicable),is received and reviewed by the Office of Admission.
Review of applications and subsequent admission status notifi-
cation continues until all program openings are filled or the
beginning of classes, whichever comes first.
Spring (January) Applicants
Students interested in January admission should call the Of fice
of Admission to inquire about anticipated program openings
before filing an application. If spring enrollment is available,
admission decisions will be made on a rolling basis beginning
November 15.
Summer (July) Enrollment
Admission to a degree program is not possible during the sum-mer term. However, summer courses are available for full credit
through the NEC Summer School program. For more information
and a course schedule, contact the Summer School office
directly at (617) 585-1130.
I M P O R T A N T D A T E S
The Office of Admission should receive all documents by the
dates listed for priority consideration.
November 1 • Deadline for receipt of admission application
and audition tape for Spring (January) 2003 enrollment.
December 2 • Priority deadline for receipt of admission and
financial aid applications and preliminary audition tapes forFall (September) 2003 enrollment.
February 3 • Deadline for receipt of audition tapes for appli-
cants not requesting an in-person audition.
February 3 • Filing date deadline of the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for Fall (September) 2003 enroll-
ment. Submission of FAFSA after this date will jeopardize the
possibility of equal consideration for available funds. (Only
U.S. citizens and permanent residents should file the FAFSA).
March 15 • Deadline for receipt of TOEFL results for all
non-native English-speaking applicants.
April 1 • Initial announcement of all admission decisions and
financial aid offers for Fall (September) 2003 enrollment.

All applicants in Jazz Studies, classical Flute, Conducting,
Contemporary Improvisation, and Soprano and Mezzo Soprano
Vocal Per formance must submit a preliminary audition tape. In
addition, all Artist Diploma and DMA applicants are required to
submit preliminary audition tapes (refer to the program descrip-

Freshman Bachelor of Music (BM) andUndergraduate Diploma (DP) Applicants
Entering freshmen are expected to demonstrate an advanced
level of accomplishment in per formance with potential to learn
and grow as musical ar tists. Graduation from an accredited
secondary school (or its equivalent) is a prerequisite, with an
expected minimum overall academic grade point average (GPA)
of 2.75 (on a 4-point scale). Home-schooled applicants are
required to submit a diploma from the GED. All freshman
domestic applicants are expected to submit recent standardized
test score results from either the SAT (Code: 3659) or ACT
(Code: 1872). Minimum expected scores on these exams are
1000 or 23, respectively. No offer of admission will be consid-ered until the Of fice of Admission receives all required academ-
ic information. (Note: Applicants whose native language is not
English are required to submit test results from TOEFL.)
Applicants to the Undergraduate Diploma should demonstrate
knowledge, repertoire, and experience comparable to that of
BM applicants, but are expected to meet a higher performance
standard. Although not an academic degree, graduation from an
accredited secondary school or its equivalent is a prerequisite
for admission. In rare cases, this may be waived if other qualifi-
cations are sufficiently strong.
Freshman applicants should request two (2) letters of recom-
mendation to be included with the submitted materials. One let-
ter should be from a current applied teacher addressing yourmusical work to date and the other from an academic, nonmusi-
cal instructor speaking of your writing and cognitive abilities.
NEC/Tufts Double Degree(BM Plus BA/BS) Applicants
The NEC/Tufts Double Degree program is a five-year program
jointly administered by New England Conservatory and Tufts
University. Each school grants admission independently, requir-
ing separate applications, materials, and related fees. All
offers of admission to the double degree program are made in
mid-March, with independent notification sent from each school.

There are limited openings to this joint program, so it is possi-
ble that an applicant can be admitted to both institutions, but
denied admission to the joint program. There is no wait list for
this program. Once admitted, double degree students receive
all financial aid from Tufts University. No financial aid is offered
through New England Conservatory.
Early Decision applicants to Tufts may receive an initial review
of their musical admissibility by submitting the NEC application
and tape by the printed deadline. For further information regard-
ing Tufts University and/or to request application forms, please
contact the Tufts Admissions Office (617) 628-5000.
Undergraduate Transfer Applicants
Transfer applicants who have achieved fewer than 32 college
credits at the time of their application must submit official
transcripts from their high school as well. Admission and studio
placement in any NEC program is determined following the audi-
tion. Full evaluation of all college work completed prior to enroll-
ment at NEC and the results of music examinations adminis-
tered during orientation will determine final placement and con-
sequently expected duration of the program of study. Students
may transfer no more than 60 credits toward the Bachelor’s
Degree or 36 credits toward the Undergraduate Diploma.
Master of Music (MM) andGraduate Diploma (GD) Applicants
Applicants for the Master of Music (MM) degree are required
to have completed a Bachelor’s Degree, or its recognized equiv-
alent, from an accredited college or university prior to matricula-
tion. Applicants whose college work has been completed out-
side the U.S. are required to submit all academic records in
official English translation, as well as official documentation of
U.S. degree equivalency. Applicants who do not demonstrate
degree equivalency are not eligible for admission to the MM
program, but may be considered for the Graduate Diploma,
following recommendation by the relevant faculty and evaluation
by the Director of Admissions.
Applicants to the Graduate Diploma (GD) must hold a
Bachelor’s Degree, Undergraduate Diploma, or equivalent certi-
fication. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge, repertoire,
and experience comparable to that of MM applicants, but will
be expected to meet a higher performance standard.
Graduate applicants should request two (2) artistic letters of
recommendation to be included with the submitted materials.
Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) Applicants
The Doctoral Admissions Committee bases admission to the
DMA program on an overall evaluative and selective process.
This includes the review of audition and entrance exam results,
writing sample, and all submitted supporting materials and rec-
ommendations. Successful applicants must demonstrate lead-
ership as performers, combining breadth of repertoire with
knowledge of style and literature. All DMA applicants must have
earned an MM degree from an accredited college or university
prior to matriculation.
In addition to the general application requirements DMA applicants
must submit: 1) a third letter of recommendation that addresses
artistic potential; and 2) a statement of purpose that briefly
describes professional goals in relation to the DMA program.
The two required entrance examinations are three-hour written-
format exams in musicology (short answer and essay) and
music theory. Examinations are scheduled the day following the
in-person audition, so applicants should expect to be on cam-
pus for two days to complete all aspects of the admission
process. Prospective students who do not pass the in-person
audition will not be advanced to the exams.
Applicants in Performance must submit a preliminary audition
tape by the printed deadline (refer to the Audition Requirements
for more detailed information). After review, qualified applicantswill be asked to prepare a full recital program, from which the
studio faculty will select an audition up to thir ty minutes in
length, to be presented in-person at NEC.
Applicants in Theory and Composition will be screened by
those departments based on the application and supporting
documents, which must be received by the printed deadline.
Qualified applicants will be asked to take the written examina-
tions at NEC.
Artist Diploma (AD) Applicants
Artist Diploma applicants must submit completed admissions
and financial aid applications* and all supporting materials, as
well as the following:
• Recording (Two (2) copies) of a recital-length (60–70 minutes
minimum) performance that demonstrates the fullest range
of the applicant’s artistr y. Recording should be CD or
professional-quality tape. CD’s and tapes of substandard
recording quality will be rejected. Performances should not be
edited. Works may be drawn from the solo and concerto
repertoires.
• Minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation
• Program proposal. The program proposal should discuss how
the AD program would assist the applicant in the development
of his/her professional solo career. Topics may include the
applicant’s reasons for choosing the AD program at New
England Conservatory, repertoire to be explored as an AD
candidate, as well as the applicant’s personal plans and
professional goals.
• Copies of appropriate visa documentation (if applicable).
International applicants to the AD program do not need to
submit TOEFL results.
The Artist Diploma Committee will not review incomplete
application packets.

Following committee review, applicants will be notified in late
January as to whether or not they have been invited to an in-
person audition. Those invited for the in-person auditions must
submit their proposed repertoire (the equivalent of a full recital
program for committee approval). Live audition reper toire may
include different pieces than the preliminary audition recording.
Ensembles applying to the Artist Diploma program should con-
tact the Office of Admission for supplementary information.
*Although the AD program is tuition free, all students are
required to complete and return the NEC Application for
Financial Aid. Applicants who are eligible to be considered for
additional need-based programs (e.g., loans, grants, work-study)
as provided by Federal and State agencies, must file the FAFSA
in addition to the NEC form. Please refer to the Financial Aid
booklet for additional information.
International Applicants
Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents
must submit additional information as part of the application
and admission process (as outlined below). No offer of full
admission will be made until the Of fice of Admission receives
all required materials. Students who require a student visa (F-1)
will be sent an I-20 form only after full admission has been
granted and a tuition deposit has been received. All documents
submitted must be either in English or original language accom-
panied by notarized English translation. Degree equivalency with
the American system of education must be demonstrated at the
time of application. Applicants who are presently living in the
U.S. who hold either a visa or permanent residency card should
submit copies of the per tinent documents.
Applicants whose native language is not English must demon-
strate English proficiency. For most students this means send-
ing the results of a recent TOEFL examination (Code: 3659).
The TOEFL is administered worldwide with frequent examination
test dates. Applicants should register early for the TOEFL, as
NEC must receive the test results no later than March 15.
Please note that students who take the written TOEFL (rather
than the computer format) must, in addition, register to take
the “Test of Written English” (TWE).
Minimum TOEFL scores for full admission: 500 (for all
undergraduate programs) and 550 (for MM and GD programs).
Certain applicants who do not achieve the minimum scores may
be offered admission requiring intensive English study at NEC.Students entering the intensive English program at NEC should
expect that their degree program might be prolonged.*
Certification of Funding with accompanying documentation and
letter(s) of support, is required for an of fer of full admission to
any student requiring the issuance of an I-20 (for application to
receive a student visa). Students who are unable to send finan-
cial information at the time of the application should be sure to
complete this aspect of their application no later than March
15. In completing the Certification of Funding form it is impor-
tant to be as accurate and truthful as possible concerning avail-
ability of funds. Funding may be combined from several sources
but the total must cover the full costs of attending NEC includ-
ing tuition, room, board, medical insurance, student fees, and
personal expenses for one year. (For 2002–2003 this totaled
$37,287.) If a student is awarded merit scholarship assistance,
this money will be in addition to any demonstrated funds. Every
applicant who does not have the full financial means at his/her
disposal to cover all costs related to attending NEC should
research all possibilities of support early in the application
process.
*Applicants who have completed a full-time, 4-year degree
program at an English-speaking college/university may request
an exemption from the TOEFL requirement in writing.
Re-admission to NEC
NEC students who currently hold “Inactive” status do not need
to apply for re-admission. Requests for re-activation of enroll-
ment should be directed to the Office of the Dean of Students
as early as possible prior to the beginning of the term (617-
585-1310). Former NEC students who have withdrawn from
their programs must re-apply through the Office of Admission.
Students requesting re-admission must submit updated tran-
scripts, résumé, repertoire lists, and recommendations at the
time of application for re-admission. An audition or interview
may be requested before a decision is made regarding readmis-
sion. No review of financial aid will be made prior to an of fer of
re-admission. In order to be considered for scholarship/finan-
cial aid, all appropriate paperwork must be on file with the
Office of Financial Aid.
Timely submission of all materials is in the student’s best interest
as programs close and all available financial aid is expended early.
Application for Additional Degreesby NEC Alumni and Current Students
NEC alumni and current students must file a full application
complete with requested transcripts and supporting materials.
Current NEC students interested in applying to begin a new
degree or program must request that of ficial copies of their
NEC transcripts from the Registrar’s Office be sent to the Office
of Admission. The application fee for NEC Alumni and current
students is $50.00 per program/major.
Financial Aid
In order to receive financial aid, applicants must complete andsubmit a NEC Financial Aid Application. This is a separate form
- you may obtain a copy from the Office of Admission or may
download a copy from the website. In addition, U.S. citizens
and permanent residents should file the FAFSA. See the
Financial Aid Application for further details and instructions.

Spring (January) Enrollment
All auditions for January enrollment are by tape only. However,
applicants to certain majors may be asked to present an in-per-
son audition in addition to the tape. Please refer to the appro-
priate Audition Requirements section and the Tape Guide-lines

sible. Once an audition has been scheduled, no changes can
be accommodated. Applicants who cancel an audition for docu-
mented, unforeseen difficulties (e.g., illness, inclement weath-
er, injury) may request placement on a waiting list should audi-
tion openings become available. However, due to the large
number of scheduled auditions, few openings usually occur.
Accompanists are not required for instrumental auditions,
although applicants wishing to audition with their own
accompanist (personally arranged) may do so. Accompanists
are provided for Vocal Performance and Jazz auditions at NEC.

live rhythm section.
