Today’s meeting - IAN LAWRENCE talks about Friedreich's Ataxia

Friedreich's ataxia is caused by a

genetic defect which affects male and

female children alike and is passed

down as a recessive trait. This means

that the disease will develop in offspring

only when both mother and father

transmit the recessive Friedreich's ataxia

gene. A child who receives the

defective gene from one parent and a

normal gene from the other becomes a

carrier and never develops the disease.

For this reason, there may be carriers of

Friedreich's Ataxia in a family that has no

known history of the disorder. When both

parents are carriers, the chances of a

child inheriting Friedreich's ataxia are

one in four.

Fiedreich's ataxia is a genetic disorder that causes progressive

damage to the nervous system resulting in symptoms ranging from

muscle weakness and speech problems to heart disease. Ataxia

(loss of co-ordination) results from the degeneration of nerve tissue in

the spinal cord and of nerves that control muscle movement in the

arms and legs.

President Anne’s update

In Cesky Krumlov last week. ….Ray I

think the beer is too strong for you!

Hi everyone.

We are in Vesprem Hungary, and last evening as we arrived at our restaurant for dinner

we spied a Rotary wheel on the door. Made some enquiries and it turned out that Rotary

was on last night, so off we went. The RC of Vesprem is 10 years old - all male, so they

were somewhat bemused by my presence, not to mention Presidential status. Some very

heavy artillery in the carpark - Large Audis, BMWs and Mercs and mostly black!!

Goat and YES Projects

The goat project is well underway. The following activities have taken place:

1. A goat house and paddocks have been constructed. This was completed in the last week of May and

provides safe and dry places for the goats to live.

2. Bahay Tuluyan already owned 9 native goats and to this herd were added 14 hybrid and purebred goats

including:

9 hygrade heifer does

3 purebred Anglo buck

1 crossbreed Bur/Anglo Nubian buck

3. In June, 4 new baby goats were born from two does in the new herd although only 3 survived. One of the

original native goats also died.

4. The goats were injected with vitamins and are fed with grass and feed. Two of the baby goats could not

suckle from their mother so were bottle fed with a mixture of formula milk and natural goat‟s milk.

5. A series of training seminars about goat raising has been provided by Rotary Club of Los Banos Maquiling

for the children and staff of Bahay Tuluyan including:

a. „How to run the business‟, 16 May 09, 41 participants

b. „Giving vitamins and feeding‟, 28 May 09, 44 participants

c. „Understanding the cycle of birth‟, 6 June 09, 41 participants

d. „Pasteurising milk, making goats‟ milk cheese and cooking goats‟ milk‟, 20 June 09, 50 participants

e. „Goat raising & story telling‟, 25 July 09, 53 participants

Training about

making products

from goat‟s milk

A dialogue between RC Los Banos Maquiling and Bahay Tuluyan was held in relation to the YES Project in early

July. Various matters were discussed including:

The successful waste management & recycling program set up by the municipality of Los Banos

The information that the municipality of Victoria may set up a waste management system shortly

The difficulty in providing educational modules about recycling without having an existing recycling

program in place

The desperate need for solid waste management in Masapang where most waste is currently being

burned

The difficulty in establishing a recycling program which relies on Bahay Tuluyan collecting rubbish from

the community

The potential to set up a small scale pilot waste management project for Bahay Tuluyan, Masapang

National High School and Masapang Elementary School (which all share a common perimeter fence)

In light of the above discussion, the following decisions were made:

Bahay Tuluyan would endeavour to set up a meeting with the Mayor of Victoria to discuss the proposed

waste management project – Bahay Tuluyan has done this and is waiting for the municipality to respond

with their availability

Bahay Tuluyan would approach the municipality of Los Banos to inquire about their system and see

how/if this may be replicated – Bahay Tuluyan has made the initial investigation and there appears to be

great potential. The municipality has requested a formal letter to the Mayor in order to take things

further.

The partners will meet again soon to discuss the project and plan the next steps. It is hoped that the

infrastructure for the project can be established in the next few months.

children of Bahay Tuluyan, through participating in training seminars, are able to be actively involved

in caring for the goats.

Despite the overall positive progress in the project, there have been some obstacles. In early August

five men were found in the vicinity of the goat house late at night after having climbed the fence to

enter the property illegally. The police were immediately called but no suspects were apprehended.

In light of the risk of theft occurring, we plan to further secure the goat‟s house with steel bars and

extra lighting. A security guard currently secures the property 24 hours a day and this will continue.

Restaurants in our area to support

Australia Twin brothers Anthony & Domenic Cavallo don't look

much alike but their passion for preparing

mouthwatering dishes is very much the same. As head

chefs at some of the finest seafood restaurants both here

and interstate they have gained a wealth of experience

and now its all available at their own Esca Grill.

The Boat House Elevated on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, The

Boathouse is a good sight grander than your usual

boatshed. However, this recently constructed restaurant

retains a cheeky hint of its waterside namesake in the

timber and tin walls and the converted-warehouse feel.

The latest venture by the crew behind Fenix, The

Boathouse offers a semi-casual space for weekend

brekkies or laidback lunches and dinners, with views of

the river and lazily strolling locals. The woodfired oven

dominates the space and the menu, with

Mediterranean mains supplemented by a range of

pizzas - these snack-size pizzettas have a traditional thin

crust and a mixture of both authentic and original

toppings.

Quote of the Week

There is nothing which we receive

with so much reluctance as

advice………Joseph Addison

You've been sentenced to death in an

obscure foreign country which has a

strange law. Before the sentence is

carried out, two papers -- one with

"LIFE" written on it and one with "DEATH"

written on it -- are folded up and

placed in a hat. You are permitted to

pick out one of the papers (without

looking), and if you choose the one

with "LIFE" written on it, you are set free.

Otherwise, the death sentence is

carried out. On this occasion, a mean-

spirited acquaintance of yours, bent on

your demise, has substituted the paper

with "LIFE" written on it with another one

with "DEATH" written on it. This person

gleefully informs you of what he has

done and that you are doomed to die.

You are not permitted to speak to

anyone about this misdeed, nor will you

have a chance to switch the papers or

the hat yourself in time.

How will you avoid certain death?

Riddle Answer: After you draw one of the papers, swallow it. The jailer will be forced to

check the remaining paper to determine what the one you drew said. The jailer will of

course see a paper with "DEATH" written on it, assume you drew the one with "LIFE" written

on it, and set you free.
