Saint Antonios and Saint Andrease holy Temple of Saint Antonios and Saint Andreas was

rebuilt in 1753 in place of an older temple, which possibly was first built in the 15th century. Historically it is identified with the church in which the emperor Ioannis Palaiologos attended Mass when he visited Kerkyra as an intermediary stop on his journey to Florence in 1439, in order to resolve the matter concerning the union of the two churches.

e church belongs to the ecclesiastical Eptanesian basilica one-aisle type and a characteristic element is that it is covered with groined-vaults. In the interior of the temple, the marble chancel screen is significant. It was created by the architect Alexandros Trivolis – Pierris, roughly twenty years aer the reconstruction of the temple.

Saint Nikolaos dei Vecchi (Geronton)e Holy Temple of Saint Nikolaos of Geronton, San Nicolo

dei Vecchi, was built in the beginning of the16th century. e church of Saint Nikolaos of Geronton is, as most post byzantine churches of Corfu, of the basilica one-aisle type, with the wooden tile roof and a perimetric corridor. e building complex of the temple also includes the priest’s residence in its northern section. It was one of the richest churches of Kampielo, the catherdral of the Great Fathers up to the year 1712, and in 1916 it was granted to the Serbs.

Some very impressive elements in the interior of the temple are the sanctuary’s wooden craed chancel screen, one of the oldest to be found in the temples of Kerkyra, as well as the Pulpit, in the northern section. Some significant icons of the temple are: Saint eodora, the Holy Metalipsi and the Holy Kerkyra, that are possibly works of Emmanouel Bouniali – Tzanne.

Saint Vasileios and Saint Stefanose church architecture belongs to the particular architec-

tural style of the one- part Basilica with a wooden roof (church type of the Ionian Islands). e church was built during the 17th century. e architectural elements are influenced by western architecture.

It was the temple of the shoe-makers guild of Corfu (“San Stefano dei Callegheri”) and due to their contributions, it was a particularly wealthy temple, which flourished since 1750.

e ground plan of the temple is oblong and the entrances are on the west and north sides.

e façade of the church is plain and influenced by the Ital-ian Renaissance. e arcaded door-frame with cornice and molding, on the north side, is of great architectural interest and is indicative of the western influence, because of its monumen-tal style.

e interior of the church is characterized by a rich décor. e main architectural elements are the iconostasis and also the bell tower.

Church of All Saintse historical All Saints’ and Panagia Vlaherna‘s church was

first built in the year 1688, by Ieromonach Ieremias Sporos, in the area where it still stands (Lazanieri cantouni).

A small fraternity gave life to the church. In the year 1851 the Fraternity of e Butchers, who used to have a small church consecrated to the Panagia Vlaherna in the New Fortress of Corfu, proposed to the All Saint’s fraternity the unification of the two churches, as theirs had been destroyed by the British, who occupied Corfu.

e Butchers transferred to the new church their chancel screen with its renowned portable icons and the historical icon of Panagia Vlaherna, which can still be seen there today. e Butcher’s fraternity greatly helped the church. For every calf they sold, they kept the money for one leg in a separate fund, and then offered the amount to the church. Today this fraternity does not exist.

e visitor will be impressed by the chancel screen, which is silver-coated, and the icons of the Dodekaorton, - painted by a famous local artist named Hrisoloras - which combine the byzantine and the local style of painting.

Church of Saint SpyridonSt. Spyridon, whose parents were shepherds, is the beloved

saint and guardian of Kerkyra. He was born in 270 ac in Cyprus. Aer the death of his wife, he was made a bishop. He lived on very little and he shared the few things he owned. Although his education was limitted, having learnt very little alongside his poor parents, with his simple speech he was able to attract many people to the Christian faith.

e ceiling of the church is divided into 17 parts with golden frames, originally painted by the Kerkyrean artist, Panagiotis Doxaras, in 1727. e initial icons, however, didn’t manage to survive due to the humidity. In the middle of the 19th century, and specifically in 1852, the ceiling was restored and was given colour and vivacity by the hands of the artist Nikolaos Aspiotis.

e Shrine and Holy Relicof St. Spyridon

e Shrine in which St. Spyridon’s relic was placed was made in Vienna in 1867.

e Saint’s Holy relic remained in Cyprus for about 300 years aer his death, although at the end of the 7th century ac it was transported to Constantinople because of the Arabian invasions against Cyprus. In 1456, three years aer the fall of Constan-tinople to the Turks, the priest Grigorios Polyetos took the Saint’s relic and brought it to Kerkyra.

e Kerkyreans honour their guardian saint with grandeur. Many times during the year they have processions in his honour: on 11 August, when the island celebrates its salvation from the siege of the Turks in 1716, on 12 December, when the memory of the saint is celebrated, on the first Sunday in November and on Palm Sunday, for the island’s deliverance from the plague epidemics of 1629 and 1673 respectively, and on Holy Saturday, for the salvation of the people from a famine.

Church of St. Jason and St. Sosipatere church of St. Jason and St. Sosipater, who were disciples of

St Paul and brought Christianity to Corfu, is the most important monument of the Middle Byzantine period on the island. It is one of the earliest examples of the two-columned type church, a rec-tangular structure with a dome over the center of the cross that is inscribed within the plan of the building.

e lower part of the structure is built of large blocks of poros from the nearby ruins of the ancient city of Kerkyra. e typically Byzantine cloisonné masonry was used higher up, consisting of dressed stones with bricks in between. e interior of the church was once entirely frescoed; now wall paintings survive at various points, dating back from the 11th to the 14th century. e marble columns are from older buildings and the Baroque chancel screen is an 18th century intervention. e sarcophagi on either side of the door in the chancel screen are attributed/dedicated to the church’s patrons, St Jason and St Sosipater. e belfry and the structure on the north-west corner of the church date to the 17th century.

Metropolitan Church of Hyperagia eotokos Spileotissa

e Metropolitan Church of Kerkyra, known as Panagia (Virgin Mary) Spileotissa, is situated where the old church of St. Vlasios stood and was built in 1577. e church is dedicated to three saints, Panagia Spileotissa, since aer the destruction of the church the icon of Panagia Spileotissa was brought here, to St. Vlasios and to St. eodora.

e church belongs to the category of the Eptanesian Basilica tri-aisle churches and its impressive front view stands out for its renaissance elements.

Inside the church, the relics of St. eodora are kept in a sil-ver shrine. Its Byzantine chancel screen and various significant religious paintings, of which the oldest is the icon of Panagia Di-mosiana, are particularly noteworthy. Panagia Dimosiana is said to have been made in Ioannina at the end of the 14th century. Also, other equally notable icons are hosted in the Metropolitan church, by religious painters such as Michael Damaskinos, Em-manouel Tzanne Mpounialis and Panagiotis Paramythiotis.

Early Christian basilica at PalaiopolisOne of the most important Byzantine monuments on Corfu,

the Early Christian basilica at Palaiopolis was built in the mid-5th century by Jobianus, Bishop of Kerkyra, as we are informed by the inscription on the epistyle of the tribelon and on the narthex mosaic pavement. Built in the middle of Corfu’s Roman agora and very close to the port, the church was a five-aisled timber-roofed basilica with a transept, a double narthex, an autrium, adjacent structures, and lavish sculptural and mosaic ornamentation. It was constructed using material from the an-cient pagan sanctuaries nearby, and this is still apparent in the masonry.

Over the centuries, the church shrank to a three-aisled ba-silica and then to a single-cell structure, probably during the Middle Byzantine period, and this is the form it has today. By the 15th century, it was the katholikon of a large monastic com-plex dedicated to the Mother of God Anaphonetria, which was the home of a number of prominent church scholars. It was as-sociated with the most important families on the island up until the 19th century, and many of their members were buried inside it, as was the custom. Subsequently abandoned, the church was bombed during the Second World War.

Panagia (Virgin Mary) Mandrakinae church of Virgin Mary Mandrakina, which is dedicated

to the Virgin Mary and to Saint Panteleimonas, was built in the 18th century. In 1944 it suffered serious damage and was restored aer approximately five years.

e building of the Holy Temple of Hyperagias Virgin Mary Mandrakina maintains an elaborate symmetric exterior with a gable neb. e Tuscan- Doric order’s aspect and the four sided towerlike belfry with the elaborate neb, which was renovated in 1860 by the architect Ioannis Chronis, impress each passerby. e ground level of the temple is lower than the level of the square and is surrounded by a small courtyard.

Panayia NeradzihaPanayia Neradziha is an important monument which clearly

reveals its two construction periods, Classical and Byzantine. e lower part is the only surviving and visible section of the wall of the ancient city of Kerkyra, a fortification tower, and its construction is dated to the Classical period (5th cent. B.C.).

In the Byzantine period, the tower was converted into a small aisleless basilica with a three-sided sanctuary apse and elaborate ornamental brickwork on the exterior. e latter is a typical feature of the Byzantine architecture of the 11th and 12th centuries, in which the church was founded. From this period almost the entire north side survives, with two blind arches and an arched opening. In the post-Byzantine period (aer 1453), the church was repaired and a narthex was added to the south side.

e church must have been dedicated to the Virgin Mary (eotokos Hodegetria), patron of Constantinople, for special prayers are still said every year on the 23rd of August, her feast day, in front of the iconostasis. It probably acquired the epithet “Neradziha”, which is still used today, from the surrounding district.

Panagia ton Xenon – FaneromeniNear the temple of Saint John the Precursor, the church of

the Virgin Mary of Xenon (Foreigners) is found. e holy Tem-ple of Yperagia eotokos (Virgin Mary) of Xenon was built by the priest Nicodemos, who was from Epirus and wanted to build the church for the refugees from Epirus, who came to Kerkyra aer the persecutions during the Ottoman rule.

e church of the Virgin Mary of Foreigners belongs to the type of tri-aisle basilika. Its characteristic elements are the “ou-rania” (ceiling), which is the work of N. Koutouzis (18th centu-ry), as well as the temple’s chancel screen that is considered one of the most impressive gold plated decorated chancel screens of Kerkyra. e old temple’s chancel screen was restored in 1875, by Italians specialized in the Rococo Style. Many researchers have characterized the ‘Doors of the chancel screen’ as being of unique artistic value. Another notable element of the temple is the icon “Riza Iessai” with micrographics of the prophets and their utterances on parchments, which refer to the coming of the Messiah.
