OPEN LETTER TO TOWN OF HADLEY VOTERSWhile recently announcing as a candidate for Supervisor of the

Town of Hadley, it was brought to my attention that certain com-ments I made in jest have been taken out of context and misin-terpreted by a few individuals. I realize that everyone doesnʼthave the same sense of humor and if criticisms were imagined, they certainly were not intended.

The only person whose job is in jeopardy by me in this electionis the Town Supervisor, but sometimes rumors get circulated forno good reason. Unwarranted misconceptions and false rumorsabout me will not discourage me from running. As your Supervi-sor, I will fully rely, as every past supervisor has, on the longstanding, dedicated and qualified full time and part time employ-ees in all departments who every day give excellent service tothe citizens of Hadley. I thank them all and will appreciate theirvotes along with yours at election time.

Martinʼs Lumber WoodsWalk: Seeing the Trees for

the Forest June 6When Gary and Wini Martin

bought their Thurman woodlotand worked with a forester tocreate a Certified Tree Farmthere, it was the first step inthe realization of a dream thathad been stirring them whenthey both still had day jobs. The more they learned aboutthe principles of good woodlotmanagement, the more theyappreciated the concept ofsustainability and wanted toshare the ideas with others. They set aside a June day towelcome neighbors, cus-tomers and even strangers(though no one is a strangerfor very long at Martinʼs Lum-ber), offering guided walks into the woods, demonstrations ofthe sawmill that maximizes the lumber yielded up by each logand even interactive craft demonstrations. They call the event“Martinʼs Lumber Woods Walk: Understanding Sustainability,”and Gary is quick to say that “sustainability” may be a newword, but itʼs an old concept. “The old-timers knew about sus-tainability. My grandfather used to say, ʻTake care of your wood-lot, and your woodlot will take care of you.ʼ” This yearʼs Woods Walk, a free event, takes place on Saturday,June 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with walks scheduled at 10:30,12:30 and 2:30. Joining Gary in leading the walks is BillLaPrairie, helping identify medicinal and edible plants along theway. Wini jokes that she will assign one guest on each walk thejob of telling Gary when it is time to return to the mill for ademonstration, as he is so passionate about the woods that heloses track of the time. Those not wishing to take the walk will find lots to engage theirattention near the mill, where Wini and friends of Martinʼs Lum-ber will have displays of crafts and other items and offer activ-ities for visitors. After checking out Winiʼs sign blanks andwood-burned signs, paper bead jewelry and stained glass step-ping stones, expect this year to visit with Ernie Smith and hisantique engines, Sue and Mike Therio of Oven Mountain Farm, who make and sell wooden wares for those who work in fiberarts and will help kids make pots to plant seeds. Artist DonnaWormwood will have her well-known Adirondack Rustic Minia-tures and Wild by Nature watercolors. Sally Feihelʼs AdirondackSuds and Scents handmade soaps and lotions have great ap-peal, as does the fused glass jewelry of Barb Beis. Local AuthorPerky Granger will lead an activity related to the environmentalawareness message of her teen novel A Summer of Strangers.Little tykes and grown-ups alike will gravitate to Don and NancyDeckerʼs operating Harry Potter model train. All ages will findsomething of interest at Woods Walk, so, rain or shine, put onyour most comfortable walking shoes, head out to MartinʼsLumber at 280 Valley Road, Thurman, (about 15 minutes fromNorthway Exit 23) and stay as long as you like.

HOUSE FOR RENT

FIVE QUICK WAYS TO UPGRADEYOUR HOME FOR RESALE

(NAPSI)—Whether youʼre considering cashing in on yourequity, downsizing, trading up, moving for a change ofscenery or relocating for better prospects, a few smart in-vestments and improvements can help your home standout from the competition so you get top dollar. Even ifyouʼre not planning on moving anytime soon, these strate-gies can maximize your homeʼs value and increase itsmarketability:

• Sprucing up the exterior. If you think youʼll have a fewyears before you move, work on your landscaping now togive plants time to mature. Look for easy-care perennialssuch as hostas, which multiply on their own. If you haveless time, you can still achieve a quick makeover bypower washing paths and siding, painting or upgradingyour front door and keeping the lawn watered andweeded.

• Removing eyesores inside. Some minor adjustmentscan help buyers recognize whatʼs great about your home.Swap outdated fixtures, remove wallpaper and give every-thing a deep clean. Replacements donʼt have to be top ofthe line; they just need to eliminate hang-ups for potentialbuyers.

• Improving the kitchen—to a point. You probably wonʼtrecoup the cost of a full kitchen renovation but smallerprojects such as upgrading appliances and painting or re-finishing cabinets can modernize the space.

• Refreshing rooms with neutral paint. This is a time-hon-ored tip for a reason. While seeing your favorite bold hueson the walls makes you happy, potential buyers may notagree. A fresh coat of neutral paint can help them envisiontheir own belongings in the space.

• Focusing on energy efficiency. The right energy-smartupgrades can assure buyers theyʼre seeing an efficienthome where utility bills can be minimized. Adding insula-tion to the attic and walls can make a dramatic improve-ment in many homes. Consider the windows as well.Adding a heat-rejecting window film such as 3M Sun Con-trol Window Film can reduce cooling costs and typicallydoes not change the windowsʼ appearance. Since thewindow film can reject up to 99 percent of UV rays, it canprotect the investment you made in your hardwood floors, rugs, window treatments, furniture and artwork.Learn MoreFor further facts, visit www.3M.com/homeimprovement.
