On Saturday, June 25th, the Warren County Historical Soci-ety will host a special presentation and tour of the Starbuck Farmin Chestertown, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm with Dr. David Starbuck, internationally known archeologist.  Dr. Starbuck is a direct de-scendant of one of Chestertownʼs earliest settlers, and has beenexcavating and restoring the farm buildings and homestead aspart of his plan to make the farm productive in this new century, and share this wonderful resource with the public. The hoghouse, corn house, upper barns and newly restored homesteadhave existed since 1800, and the Starbuck farm is unique be-cause of the number of buildings still present on the original land-scape, and because it has always remained within the samefamily. Dr. Starbuck will begin with a overview and history of the farm inthe restored horse barn, followed by a tour of the restored farmbuildings, and hopefully the house, which is presently under ren-ovation construction.   Contractors working on the site will beavailable to answer individual questions as we tour.  The program is free and open to the public.  Visitors are  invitedto arrive with your own picnic dinner or box lunch any time after6:00 pm to enjoy the lovely setting and views.  After the tour, lightrefreshments will be served, and the public is invited to view thenight sky through the on-site telescope observatory. DONʼT BE “FUELISH” WITH YOUR LAWN MOWER CARE(NAPSI)—When it comes to getting the most from a lawn mower or other power equip-ment, using the wrong blend of fuel or skipping off-season maintenance just wonʼt cutit.

The fuel blends and ethanol percentages that may be right for cars—an ethanol con-centration greater than 10 percent—are not recommended for power equipment or ma-rine engines.

Also, any fuel blend stored in an unused engine may degrade over time and harmsmall engines.

Thatʼs why, experts say, itʼs a good idea for consumers to take lawn mowers and otherpower products to an authorized dealer at the end of each season. “This is a good wayto allow a trained professional to properly dispose of unused fuel and ensure the productis ready for next season,” said Mike Rudolph, senior manager, Honda Engines.

Consumers can also use fuel stabilizer when not using an engine for more than 30days. To learn more, visit the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute at www.opei.org.

Landscape Lighting(NAPSI)—Offer a warm wel-

come, provide safety and se-curity and increase the value ofyour property with a customoutdoor lighting design. Home-owners spend tens of thou-sands of dollars on beautifullandscaping, yet only enjoy itduring the day. Well-plannedlandscape lighting can adddepth and a sense of luxury toyour home.• First, view your home and

outdoor areas from the edgesof your property. Consult witha landscape lighting expert.• Decide which features to

highlight.• Soft, diffused lighting along

driveways, walkways andstairs provides safety and se-curity and welcomes guests.• Strategically placed lighting

in trees or under the eaves il-luminates larger areas.• Properly positioned ground

fixtures highlight natural ele-ments, textured walls or fa-vorite statues.• Conceal light sources behindshrubs or flowerbeds, if possi-ble, so you see the effect, notthe fixture.

OUTDOOR FEATURE TRENDS GROWING IN POPULARITY(NAPSI)—Whatever the economic climate, homeowners prefer landscape trends that let them makethe most of the weather in their own outdoor space.

A recent American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Residential Trends Survey asked res-idential landscape architecture professionals to rate the popularity of different outdoor living andlandscape features. Todayʼs homeowners, the survey said, prefer function, efficiency and fire pits, choosing such basic features as light, fire, food and a place to sit and enjoy it all.

Overall, 96.2 percent of respondents rated exterior lighting as somewhat or very popular for thisyear, followed by fire pits/fireplaces (94.2 percent), seating/dining areas (94.1 percent), grills (93.8percent) and installed seating like benches or seat walls (89.5 percent).

While the most popular outdoor features reflect an enduring sensibility, the interest in moderntechnology such as stereo systems (58.3 percent), Internet access (46.3 percent) and televisions(45.4 percent) adds to the growing trend of taking what people enjoy inside to the outdoors—up toa point. Only 10.4 percent of respondents thought outdoor sleeping areas would be popular thisyear.

“Homeowners continue to reconnect with their outdoor space. However, expect many householdsthis year to either phase in projects over time or carefully select fewer features,” said ASLA executivevice president and CEO Nancy Somerville.

When it comes to landscape elements, efficiency and sustainability reign supreme. Very popularare low-maintenance landscapes (94.2 percent), native plants (87.2 percent), water-efficient irriga-tion (83.1 percent), ornamental water features (81 percent) and food/vegetable gardens (80.3 per-cent).

Other popular sustainability features include permeable paving (77 percent), reduced lawn (72.6percent) and rainwater harvesting (63.6 percent).

MEMORIAL DAYMemorial Day has come and gone for another year and life goes on in its mysterious way just as

if the affairs of man had absolutely no bearing on the situation. This Memorial Day had a specialsignificance for me and my family. This humble patriot and veteran was honored by being asked tobe the Grand Marshall of our Memorial day parade, an honor that brought me close to tears attimes during the march.

We proceeded along the parade route in our vintage convertible to the reviewing stand where westopped for the program to begin. Son Russell came out of the crowd with these words, “Relax andenjoy it Dad, youʼre lookinʼ good.” Up to that point, I had been looking forward to the event withsome apprehension, being a bit of a shy guy that I am. But Russʼs words did the trick. After all, itwasnʼt about me. It was about our fallen comrades from all the past wars and the heroic ones stillon the battlefield.

Supporting me in the back seat was my beloved wife, Yvonne, and our two grandsons, Isaac andChandler. Yvonne commented that this was one of the few occasions that she had to take a backseat to me, but she was only kidding, Gentle Reader, and she accepted it graciously.

The ceremonies were uplifting and heartfelt and our American Legion, firemen, and others did afine job in spite of the heat. Our American Legion commander, Don Monica, and his able assistant,David Lockhart, did an absolutely fabulous job organizing a complicated event and it seemed fromour vantage point to go off without a hitch. Corinth should be proud of these citizens and their ableassistants for their dedication and hard work.

After the ceremonies in both cemeteries with speeches and laying of the wreaths, our missionwas completed and our most efficient and considerate driver, Lloyd Murdock, dropped two hot andtired little boys back to their parents. What good boys they were in all that heat and fuss. Iʼm proudto be their Grandpa! Lloyd dropped us off and we were back to reality again but with memories thatwill remain with us for a long time.

Now I am back to the hum-drum basics of my life. The basics meaning; tying my shoes in themorning, feeding the cats, making the bed, getting through breakfast and, oh yes, letʼs not forgetthe garden! The pool is open but not usable yet. Many thanks to George, Teresa, Yvette, and ofcourse those two little boys for facilitating the start-up. They happened to come during my daily naptime, so by the time I got out there, the work was all done. This is just the way I like it. I love thepool but I donʼt want anything to do with it except look at it and swim in it. I know nothing about thecare of it and donʼt want to learn.

To get back to the garden, yes, it is where Iʼm the happiest, Iʼll admit. Iʼm glad to say that, asusual, by the first of June, I have all my tomato plants in. The rest of the garden is progressing onschedule and we are looking forward to a bountiful harvest. The abundance of rain has me a bitconcerned but so far the plants are taking it in stride. It sure makes it tough on the gardener though.Iʼve had to work between showers and even in the rain at times. Every year is different and we rollwith the punches. At ninety years old, I think Iʼve seen everything in the garden but Mother Naturestill pulls a few tricks to keep me interested and still planting, digging, and hopefully harvestingplentifully. Letʼs see what she has in store for us this year. Only time will tell.

Your friend, Russ Melville

Public Presentation Workshop at Willows Bistro June 27Willows Bistro and Fiction Among Friends will collaborate to pres-ent actress/director/teacher Filomena Riviello at a June 27thdaylong workshop on the subject "Effective Public Reading: Howto read your work so people think you are the best writer sinceDickens." Riviello, who worked in New York City as a professionalactress and director for over 20 years, has directed shows atACC and for Our Town Theatre Group, and popular workshopleader for the Warrensburgh Historical Society's GraveyardWalks, selected the subtitle. "A lot of people don't know that itwas through public readings that Charles Dickens managed tosell his novels in America, where there was not a large marketfor them. He made a book tour here, and people were so movedby his readings, they bought his books," Riviello said. Persis Granger of Fiction Among Friends, with the help of Bistroowner Debbie Swan, created the Second Thursday Readings atWillows Bistro in Warrensburg to provide aspiring writers a timeand place to read short selections from their works for the public."All of the writers have enjoyed the opportunity," she said, "butmany realized that there is a lot to know about reading effectively.Enter Filomena!" The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. and run untilabout 4 p.m., and the $40 fee will include a pre-selected lunch-eon. Those wishing to attend should reserve a spot by contactingGranger at [email protected] or 623-9305 as soon aspossible, as enrollment is limited to ensure lots of individualizedinstruction. Writers are invited to bring as many short (about threeminute) writing selections as they hope to work on.
