In-class exercise, instruction, and discussion will be the major class activities. Students are required
to hand in a paper of 400-800 words on a regular basis, in which they can give a summary of what
they have learned recently, describe their thoughts on a topic discussed in class, or argue for their
standpoint in a specific social issue.

This course is taught in line with Standards for Level 1 of JLPT. Through explaining the difficult
points in Japanese grammar and comparing the grammatical uses that students tend to confuse with

Course Introduction :By the end of this course students are expected to acquire an encyclopedic knowledge of Japanese

Japan with China, students will have a better understanding of the civilization and people of this
country, and the international relationship in Asia.
This course is a survey of Japan’s geographical conditions, population, climate, politics, economy,
culture, education, history, and literature, as well as Japanese people’s thinking and behaving modes,

folk customs and living habits. Class activities include lectures from the teacher, students’ duty
report, video watching, and in-class debate.

Course Title: Network Communication in Japanese

Course Introduction:
Through communicating in Japanese online, students are expected to learn how to run a computer in
which a Japanese operating system is installed, and input a Japanese text on a computer. Besides
these skills, they will learn how to browse net pages in Japanese for information, and to improve
their communicative competence online.
Students are assigned a topic each week. They are required to discuss the assigned topic on the
network, and then hand in a written record of their online communication. Then they will have to
summarize and reorganize the ideas in the record, and discuss the topic further in class.

Course Title: Outline of Japanese

Course Introduction:
This course is intended for the third-year Japanese majors. It is a systematic and theoretical
introduction of the pronunciation and intonation of Japanese, letters and Chinese characters used in
this language, and its lexical and grammatical features. After a semester’s study, students will have a
more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of this language, and become more adept in using
it.
This course consists of four parts. The first part examines the way vowels and consonants are
pronounced in Japanese, the formation of a syllable in Japanese and Japanese phonemes. The second
part deals with the way Kanji and Kana are used in written Japanese, as well as the functions of
Kanji, and the evolution of Kana. The third section includes an introduction to vocabulary, the senses
of a word, the formation of Japanese vocabulary, and the composition of a Japanese word. The last
section is a survey of tense, aspect, and voice in Japanese. Lectures, in-class discussion and practice,
and take-home assignment will all be considered in order to make this course more efficient. The
interaction between the teacher and students will be ensured in this course.

Course Introduction:
This course is intended for the third-year Japanese majors. It is a general survey of Japanese literary
history from Ancient Literature, Classical Literature, Medieval Literature, Early Modern Literature,
to Modern Literature. Major writers and literary works will be studied in relation to their respective
historical backgrounds. After a semester’s study, students will not only understand and appreciate
Japanese literature better, but will lay a solid foundation for their future literary study;
Students are required to read the original unadapted works of Japanese writers. They are encouraged
to exchange their ideas or opinions with their teacher in class.

Course Introduction:
Reading materials of various subjects and genres will be used in this course. Some of them will deal
with such topics as Japanese students’ life in China, Japanese society and culture, and comparison
between Japanese and Chinese cultures. The types of writing that students are required to read in this
course are letters, informal literary and academic essays, expository essays on science and
technology, fiction, and argumentative discourses. The difficulty of reading assignments will be
increased, as students improve their performance gradually. Each passage to be assigned to students
will have 500-1000 Kanji or Kana this semester.
The role of the teacher is to train students to develop reading skills. He will provide guidance for
students to summarize an essay, and analyze its central idea, its structure, and language. They are
required to finish follow-up exercises after class in order to reach the goals set down for this course.

intonation, answer the questions by using the words or sentence patterns that they have learned in

Course Introduction:
This course is intended to improve students’ reading comprehension and develop their ability with
regard to Japanese-Chinese translation and Chinese-Japanese translation.
The course consists of eight units of different focuses, including sentence pattern, vocabulary,
semantic symbols and themes. The instructor models translation practice after the form of National
J-C & C-J Written Translation Test held by Ministry of Personnel, the State Council, and provides
students with a systematic training so as to get them well prepared for the exam.

Course Title: Research on Japanese Linguistics

Course Introduction:
This course provides students with an arena for Japanese linguistic study. They will have a general
picture of this field by the end of this course. They will not only know how to conduct a research in
this area, but also be able to examine others’ research results independently. In-class discussion and
analysis will develop their awareness of problems in linguistic study, and acquaint them with the
mode of doing research: identifying an academic problem, examining it, and finally solving it.
Students are encouraged to exchange their ideas of the characteristics of Japanese language in class,
and come up with a topic worth exploring in their research. They are required to collect and consult
documents on Japanese linguistics independently, give a review of them, then identify a problem
worth discussion, and finally propose a solution to it. The whole class will be divided into a few
groups, each for a specific research issue. Though they are asked to cooperate with each other in
doing research, they will have to write papers independently.

Course Introduction:
This course is an overall examination of Japanese economy, consisting of both theoretical
considerations and case studies. It will help to broaden students’ social horizon, and will also benefit
them in their job-seeking and further education.
This course consists of ten units, sixteen topics and more than fifty sub-topics. It unites economic
fundamentals with the reality of Japanese economy, historical review with observation of current
situations, overall examination with in-depth discussion, and diachronic comparison with synchronic
comparison. Another two features of this course are that the teacher will choose up-to-date materials
for students to read, and use easy-to-understand language to explain economic issues. Teaching

This is an elective course intended for the third-year Japanese majors. The focus of this course is on
parts of speech in Japanese. After a semester’s study students are expected to know the research
already done in this field and its latest trend, and different viewpoints or approaches in linguistic
study, as well as jargons used by scholars in this area. When reading research documents, students
are expected to notice their inadequacy, and identify a research topic that needs to be further
explored. This course will benefit students when they are working on BA Thesis, or if they want to

identify a research topic suitable for themselves, and then to search for documents about previous
study and rearrange them. They are advised to discuss with the teacher and their peers, and to hear
different opinions. They will have to proceed strictly in line with the schedule in the syllabus.
This course introduces the basic principles and rules of paper writing and provides students with
sample writing and opportunities for practice. Students are divided into different groups according to
the field they choose. The process of paper writing includes searching for documents, identifying a

in this course, ranging from the uses of language to one’s bearing or behavior, particularly the part

course can serve as a complement to any other course on Japanese society and culture.
This course introduces the basic principles for one to observe different nations’ etiquette, the
