END OF THE ROAD FOR MAROONS

In the past the fi ring of maroons was the signal that Cromer’s lifeboat was being launched. This has now been

replaced on safety grounds by an alert system using a siren, which will help clear the way for launching crews and to fl ag up when the boat is heading out on a shout. The ten second siren is linked to a voice

warning explaining what it means - and aims to warn public on the seafront and nearby boating traffi c of an impending launch. It

will only be sounded between 08 00 and 20 00 as necessary.

For Operational reasons a test sounding will also be held on either the fi rst or second

Sunday of the month at approximately 11 00. (This will start on 8th May 2016).

HOW WE SHARED THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY.

Norfolk pulled out all the stops to show their appreciation of the service given by Queen Elizabeth on the occasion of her 90th

birthday.Beacons were lit along the coast as well as in towns and villages

inland reminding many of the Millenium celebrations. In Cromer a torchlight procession from the Parish Church to the old lookout on the East Cliff .saw throngs of people cramming the narrow streets and that special feeling of community spread throughout the crowds. We were pleased as always to see the scouts in attendance and I’m sure that many of the little one’s

will remember the day for a long time.In Mundesley the Fireworks and Torches led to a party in the

aptly named Coronation Hall.

During the preview evening, we paused and Terry Brown our parish council chairman proposed a toast to her majesty.Cromer had a parade, unfortunately not promoted as well as it could have been, but enjoyed by those in the know, Mundesley had a great knees up, tea and entertainment for many of the village and many more events throughout the area most blessed with good weather. That was the practise, what is your community doing for the offi cial birthday in June let us know and we will tell all our readersHere in Trimingham Sunday 1st May will see our monthly table top sale, the following Sunday 8 May our annual pet service all creatures great and small, plus owners welcome at Trimingham church at 3.30pmReassuringly Mr Chris Tomlinson of Westover Vets will be on hand if our singing frightens the horses or any other sensitive creatures, tea and biscuits afterwards in the Pilgrim ShelterEnjoy your Crab Tales

Dear Editor,I write to bemoan the decline in letter writing and the obsession people have with texting. I am not a ludite, i have a phone and a pc. Years ago letters were a chance to clearly explain a situation, express an emotion or ramble on as you would were the person next to you. Do your readers agree wth me that reducing everything to a few words and then expecting an instant, and so unconsidered response is not nearly the quality of interaction that letter writing, done well, can aff ord. When mobiles fi rst came on the scene they were the domain of the business man. The people he or she would contact were not friends or family, they were a means to an end. Somewhere along the road the whole thing got corrupted. Texting replaced conversation and letter writing and in some cases personal interaction.Don’t get me started on the decline in grammer and spelling and the strange text language that i refuse to learn.Lastly in my tirade may i point out that letter writing is the best way to order your thoughts and you can often surprise yourself with your conclusion.Do you keep texts? Well done to both of them

Will’s Plaice celebrates 10 yearsAs our eponymous hero celebrates ten years in East Runton we speak to Will and fi nd out how it all happened, in his own words.

I trained as a chef at Beechwood Hotel North Walsham under a very good family friend Steve Norgate (who is one of North Norfolk’s leading chefs) on and off for 10 years.Early 2006 I was talking to my eldest son’s grandad Paul Lambert in his allotment he told me there was a fi sh & chip shop that had been empty for two years in East Runton.I was intrigued and found out the number of the owner Bernie Parkin, only problem I had no money for rent, £40 to my name to be

precise.I went to meet Bernie and he said he would give me a chance. Another problem I had no money for stock, luckily as a chef I was in contact with many good local suppliers therefore my name was my credit and my father Terry Vincent arranged a small personal loan for me. I was on my way to opening my fi sh and chip shop.I have a very good friend Jay Wright who helped me until I could aff ord staff .We opened the doors for the fi rst time on 6 May 2006. We have had a few hiccups along the way with a fi re in Oct 2010 but apart from that I have never looked back. For us, it’s personal - we make our own Fishcakes and Tartare Sauce, and believe in those little extras like a slice of fresh lemon with your fi sh.We’re mad about quality, service and, of course, hygiene (we hold a food hygiene rating of 5 - ‘Very Good’).We have now invested in Beef dripping frying to give that ex crisp and the resulting feedback has been phenomenally positive.‘Will would like to take this opportunity to thank his parents and Bernie for their support’.Last in running order but not importance his ‘Wonderful, Amazing Wife , Maggie’. The New Meningitis B VaccineThe NHS childhood immunisation schedule changed in September 2015 to include

meningitis B vaccine (Bexsero) for babies along with other routine immunisations at eight weeks, 16 weeks and 12 months. Babies are at the highest risk, and babies aged

five to six months are the most vulnerable, so vaccinating them before this age offers the best protection.

There are two vaccines against the other common strains of meningococcal disease – the Men ACWY vaccine (against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y) which is now offered on the NHS to teenagers and first-time students and the Men C (meningococcal

group C bacteria) vaccine for babies.Since the Men C vaccine was introduced into the NHS’s national childhood vaccination

programme in 1999, the disease has been virtually eliminated in the UK. Nowadays, there are just a handful of Men C cases each year, mainly in older, unvaccinated adults.

The Men B vaccine will protect babies against infection by meningococcal group B bacteria, which are responsible for more than 90% of meningococcal infections in young

children.Meningitis and septicaemia caused by meningococcal group B bacteria can affect people

of any age, but is most common in babies and young children. The new programme makes England the first country in the world to offer a national,

routine and publicly funded Men B vaccination programme.Babies given the Men B vaccine alongside their other routine vaccinations at two and

four months are likely to develop fever within the first 24 hours after vaccination so it’s important to give liquid paracetamol following vaccination to reduce the risk of fever.

Other common side effects include irritability and redness and tenderness at the injection site. The liquid paracetamol will also help with these symptoms.

There are hundreds of different strains of meningococcal group B bacteria around the world, and some tests predict that the Men B vaccine protects against almost 90% of

the ones circulating in England. However it is not yet clear how this will relate to lives saved or cases prevented.

The Meningitis Research Foundation states meningitis B is very rare, particularly in children over 12 months old. Cases have been declining steadily and are now at their lowest in decades. Each year only five children per 100,000 aged one to four contract

meningitis B, and it is even less common in children over the age of five. Many parents have asked if they can access the vaccine for their children privately.

The high profile campaign for children to be vaccinated against meningitis B has led to a surge in demand for the vaccine and it is currently very difficult, even impossible in most areas, to get the vaccine privately. The manufacturer, GSK, is warning there are

likely to be difficulties getting the vaccines done privately until the summer – although the NHS vaccination programme is continuing as usual. GSK says that they ‘hope to

have improving supply from summer 2016 and we are working hard to increase capacity in 2017’.

The Meningitis Research Foundation’s helpline (080 8800 3344) can provide further advice and information about clinics running waiting lists for private vaccination.

The Foundation states: ‘Meningitis B is a devastating disease which can be fatal in 10% of cases and so we understand why parents want to get their children vaccinated as soon

as possible. However, we would like to remind people that this is a rare disease.’If you are not sure whether you or your child have had all your routine vaccinations, ask

your practice nurse to find out for you. It may be possible to “catch up” later in life.

CAN YOU FIND ROOM IN YOUR HEART AND HOME TO FOSTER OR ADOPT AN

UNWANTED GREYHOUND?Founded last year, Norfolk Greyhound Rescue transports greyhounds from Ireland where, whether they have raced or not, many are unwanted and at risk. NGR is run entirely by volunteers.Fosterers would have all the dog’s expenses paid whilst the hound is in their care. Fostering is a very fulfi lling role – you can literally save a greyhound’s life.Generally they are gentle, quiet, lazy pets, requiring a small amount of exercise. They prefer sleeping to anything else! They have occasional kooky moments where they show what clowns they can be! These qualities steal the heart of any dog-loving human. Donations, fundraising, adoption or fostering are all ways to help.

Mundesley Mumblings by T Webster

Bonnets, ‘Bots and Burnt!Phew we did it! We actually managed to get through the Easter break with everything intact. Easter bonnet was made, 4 hours of sewing and taking me back to 1984 and Mrs Kulagowska my home crafts teacher stating that 2 terms to hand sew a pillowcase

was maybe not a sign of a future job! However, bonnet was made, and we even survived the rain shower on the way home which threatened to melt half our good work! No-one tells you when you are in the maternity ward that this stuff they made you do years ago really will be of use. Mrs K will be laughing if she

could only have seen me….Easter weekend saw the family descend and mayhem ensue as we enjoyed some fun together, The Easter bunny was very kind and even the prodigal chose not to get up too early on Sunday

a defi nite little gift. The weekend saw us take full advantage of seeing everyone, even though my mother-in-law ended up being

a ringer as we played cards that evening. She kept on saying how she was no good at this and never remembered the rules then

ended up smashing it and winning hands down. It’s something we now try and do whenever we get the chance in our own

family, sit down and play card and board games. I was lucky in my childhood to remember Sunday evenings as being the time when after a cold tea we would sit down and play all manner of games. It stood me in good stead and means we are never short

of something to occupy us. A pack of cards takes up no room and there are so many games to play. But one lesson learnt - never

play with the Mother-in-Law and expect to win….!The holidays this year has been a mixed bag on the weather front

and whilst we managed a couple of days out on the beach, we also managed to underestimate the spring sunshine and Prodigal

and I got proper Aunt Sally rosy cheeks – the fi rst of the year, despite the factor 30 sun block. As my dearly beloved husband says, (he with the skin of a Rhino who sees sunshine and gets tanned) the rest of us delicate blossoms need tenderising gently before we survive the onslaught of sunshine. However, the best fun was building a robot out of the contents of the recycling bin. In true Blue Peter style, we took egg boxes, masking tape and anything we could fi nd to make a 3ft robot complete with plastic cup hands, and real hair from the Easter nest fi ller. I am not sure who had the most fun, me or my son, but “Bob the Bot” now proudly provides a sentinel next to the fi replace. Best of all though are the lighter nights now and looking forward to weekends in the garden and down on the beach. Whilst it’s still fresh at nights, it is such a tonic to have those longer days to enjoy. We have just planted some salad veggies and are trying our hand at some tomatoes this year, though after my attempt at growing sunfl owers last year, my lovely son as usual was fi rst to tell me that planting was a boy’s job, so he needed to do it so it would be right. Unfortunately, he probably has a point, (in that he would probably be better at it – not it being a boy’s job!) but that does not make it easier to swallow. Out of the mouth of babes and all that!So this holiday break we have managed to survive bonnets, bots and getting burnt not bad for just 2 weeks, goodness knows what we will get up to in the next few months as we roll on into summer. Can’t wait, maybe Bob needs a friend…..

Norfolk District Council, in partnership with The Sheringham Society.Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture said: “The District

Council is proud to have been able to fund such an impressive artwork and support David Barber in this project.

“The mural isn’t even fi nished yet and already it’s the talk of the town. It is a real boost to the Deep History Coast and Sheringham itself.”

The mural was inspired by the excavation in 1995 of the 700,000-year-old skeleton of the West Runton steppe mammoth. The 13-foot tall skeleton is the

oldest ever found in the UK and the largest nearly-complete mammoth skeleton known.

The mural project includes education outreach so school children can take part in painting sessions. In addition, there will be talks about the Deep History Coast sharing information on the local ancient environment and prehistory of Britain.

Honeymoon couple donate wedding money to Cromer

RNLI

John and Carole Cheshire, who hail from Nottingham, were married last week after many

years together. The couple, both in their seventies, had been together for many years but decided to tie

the knot whilst on holiday in Venice last year.Carole had proposed to John on three successive Leap Years but with no success, then whilst they

were on a gondola last year, John popped the question.

Having both been married before and with their house furnished with all they need, they decided to ask wedding guests to give donations to the RNLI.A poem was used in the wedding invitations which

included the lines:

‘We support those who give their time for freeTo save people in distress upon the sea

The RNLI is such a worthy causeSo please donate without a pause’

A donation of £300 was handed over to a representative of RNLI Cromer on Wednesday 13th April 2016 by the honeymooning couple.

Good luck from all at Crabtales Mr and Mrs Chesire.

Carol said ‘It was a lovely family day and we all wanted to show our support for the RNLI. Being in Cromer seemed the ideal

place to donate to the RNLI’

60 years On But Still Sounding As Good As New.

The Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band (CSBB) will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary this June, 2016. The Band

was formed in 1956 by the merger of the Cromer Band, which came into being in the 1940’s, with the Sheringham

Temperance Band which was formed approximately 25 years earlier. The new Band was originally called the

Cromer and Sheringham Silver Band but in time adopted the name it has today, although for a brief period the

band was known as Cromer and Sheringham Brass until telephone enquiries regarding what horse brasses were on

sale suggested the title was misleading. For some years CSBB was a competition band and was

successful in winning fi rst place in the East Anglian Brass Band Association Annual Competition. However, in recent years the band has found that it needs to focus on rehearsing the many pieces programmed to fulfi l the

growing demand for the Band’s appearances. Preparing for the 60th Anniversary performances, along with other events, means that the Band’s calendar is as

good as full, as can be seen from a visit to our web site - www.cromerandsheringambrassband.com . However, it

is particularly worth mentioning the Open Day which is to take place on Saturday 4th June between 10 am and 4 pm in the Cromer Parish Hall. This will be an opportunity to meet and talk to band members, have a bevy and bicky,

learn something more of the Band’s history and even have a blow of a brass instrument. In the afternoon visitors can

pop in to listen to the Band playing an informal concert. Stay as long as you wish- there is no charge.

We look forward to meeting you.
