*PrologueJapan'skimonoculturebegantodevelopalongitsownuniquelineswiththecreationofthekosodeintheHeianperiod.ThedyeingtechniquesofynzenwerelaterperfectedduringthemiddleEdoperiodinnroto.Withthesetechniques,fabricscanbedyedinvirtuallyanydesignimaginable.Theynzenstylewasahitwiththepublic,andsoonbecamethelookofthedav.

"Designing,sketching,outlining,backpencilingMORIGUCHIstudieshismassivecollectionofsketchestoworkouthis

newdesign.Heconsidersthesketchingstagethemostimportant,asthesketcheswilldeterminethedesignthrougheachstepofthedyeingprocess.MORIGUCHIdrawstheoutlinesofthedesignonthefabricusingasyntheticbluedyeandcalligraphypen.Thesebluelineswilllaterbewashedaway,leavingnotrace・Someoftheselines、hedoesnotwanttolose.Thesewillbetracedonthereversesideofthefabricwithapencil.

%ltomenori-oki (outliningwithreliefpaste)Usingatoolsimilartoapastrybag,MORIGUCHIapplieSthinribbonsofgumpasteovertheoutlinesofthedesign.Thisstepisdonetoensurethattheoutlinesofthepatternaresharp; ifitisnotdoneproperly,theoutlineswillbefUzzyandthefabricwillbeuseless.Itisanessentialstepintheynzenprocess.

fabricwithwatertobegintheprocessofremovingthebluedye.Workingfromthebackofthefabric,heusesabrushtohelperasethebluelines.

*ApplyingvolatileoilOncethebluelineshavebeenremoved,MORIGUCHIusesatoweltosoakupdyeandwater,andthefabricisallowedtod'y・Hethenbrushes

onavolatileoil,whichhelpsthereliefpastepenetratedeeperintothefabric.
