Step 1

Scan• Scan all the images of the book using a flatbed scanner or a printer scanner. • It is better to use a scanner rather than a camera. The camera introduces too much noise and shadows. Scanned images are cleaner and more professional looking.

Step 2Plan• Plan how you want the pages to look on your PowerPoint.• Most children's books carry the image across two pages.

• So the natural flow would be to either place two pages side by side on one slide or stitch them together first using Paint.net.• Plan how you want the text• Do you want to type it in and animate it? (Easiest)• Or do you want to use highlighted boxes over the existing text?

Step 3

Record• Using Audacity, record a narration of the book• Save sound clips using the planned layout

• generally each line of text is one clip• any words with extra long pauses should be saved as a separate clip as it is easier to time the animation.

Refer to Audacity tutorial

Step 4

Prepare Images• Using Paint.net prepare images according to your planned layout.• If you plan to animate objects within the images be sure to remove the object from the background and save a separate image of the object to add back into powerpoint.

Refer to Paint.net tutorial

Step 5

Insert Images• Create a blank PowerPoint presentation with enough slides to paste the images.

• If you want a colored background apply it to all the slides after you create them.• If the images will completely cover the slide, it is not necessary to use a background.• Insert each image onto each slide according to your

plan.

Step 6Prepare Text• Typed text:

• Create a separate text box for each sentence or line of text.• Try to place the text as close to the book format as possible.• Remember that text should be large enough for the student to read without problems.• Highlighted text:• Insert a rectangle shape onto the page. • Format the rectangle to desired color and transparency.• Stretch the shape to fit the individual word.• Copy and paste as many shapes as needed.

Step 9Transition pages• To make your PowerPoint book play automatically you will need to set transitions for each page. • You can set a transition to apply to all pages (easiest).

• However, this will create some pages that seem to “wait forever” to turn and some pages that appear to “turn quickly” or “cut off”. • This is due to the timing being the same for each page.• You can set individual or “customized” transitions for each page (takes more time, but is a more smooth running book).

Step 10Save• Once you are happy with your presentation it is time to save it.• It is important to save your PowerPoint presentation as a “Show” if it is for student viewing or showing.• This way when you click on it – It always opens up as a show and will automatically run through.• If you are saving the Presentation to share, then you should save as a presentation – leaving it available for editing.• You can also save it using the “Package for CD” option in the “File” drop-down menu. This is useful to share across platforms and other computers. It will create any linked files to travel with the presentation.

• Creating your own books can be very liberating.• You can simply plan the book around the lesson creating a very simple story line using the lesson vocabulary words and sentence structure.• Create the sound using your own voice and audacity.• Create the images with Paint.net• Or you can just download clip-art from the internet.• Then use the same animation and timing techniques for the PowerPoint books.• I have included some examples on the training CD for you to view and use
