    Summary

The appreciation of early Christian and Byzantine Art asa sublime expression of religious thought and feeling is a com-

paratively modern phenomenon. Byzantine art is both staticand dynamic: static in the sense that once an image was esta-blished it was felt that no improvement was necessary; dyna-mic in the sense that there was never one style and these stylesor modes were constantly changing. The study presents an ove-rall view of the history and changing character of EarlyChristian and Byzantine architecture, from Rome and Milan toConstantinople, Greece and the Balkans with the influences.
