    This pattern will show you how to crochet the beholder shown at the bottom left of this page.

    The finished beholders are approximately 4 to 4.5 inches tall, not counting the eye stalks. Please

    note that this pattern is for non-commercial purposes only; neither it nor the finished beholders

    are ever to be sold. The image and concept of the beholder belongs to Wizards of the Coast.

    You will need:

    Hook:H

    Worsted weight yarn:

    Approximately 3 oz of main color

    Small amounts contrast colors for

    eyes, white, and black

    Polyester fiberfill or other stuffing

    Yarn needle

    Gaugeis unimportant. Alter theyarn and hook sizes as you see fit

    to increase or decrease the size of

    your beholder.

    Body to be worked in the round.

    Rnd 1:Ch 2. 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6)

    Rnd 2:2sc in each st around. (12)

    Rnd 3:(2sc in next st, sc in next st) around.

    (18)Rnd 4:(2sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) around.

    Rnd 5:Sc in each st around.

    Rnd 14:Sc in next 4 sts, ch 12, sk next 12 sc,sc in remaining 20 sts. This forms the opening

    of the mouth (Fig. 1).

    and sew shut.

    Begin stuffing body through mouth opening,

    being careful to leave space for the mouth

    interior. In the end, this thing will need to look

    more like Pacman than a round ball, so keep

    this in mind.

    Mouth interior

    Row 1:With black, ch 11. Sc in 2nd ch from

    hook and in each st across. (10) Turn.

    Row 2:Sl st in next 2 sts, sc in next st, sc and

    hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc and hdc in

    next st, sc in next st, sl st in last 2 sts. (12)

    Fasten off.

    With black, join in the base chain of the mouth

    interior. Working on the opposite side of the

    chain (fig. 3), work rows 1 and 2 again.

    Sew mouth interior to mouth hole, with the

    base chain as the middle each end of the

    base chain goes in one corner of the mouth. To

    sculpt the sides of the mouth, pinch the

    beholders body at the corners of the mouth

    and run a threaded needle through to tack it

    down.

    Main eye to be worked in the round

    Rnd 1:Ch 2. 6sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6)

    Rnd 2:2sc in each st around. (12)

    Rnd 3:(2sc in next st, sc in next st) around.

    (18) Sl st in next st and fasten off. Sew to

    front of head above mouth.

    Eye ridge

    Row 1:In main color, ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch

    from hook and in next 2 sts. Hdc in next 3 sts.

    Sc in last 3 sts.

    Sew to head, curving around the main eye and

    overlapping it just a little.

    Teeth

    Row 1:Ch 13; this is the base chain. Sl st in

    2nd ch from hook and in next 2 sts. (Ch 2, sl st

    in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 sts of base

    chain) across. This should make 5 teeth. Sew

    to top of mouth.

    To separate the teeth and make them look

    more like fangs, with black yarn, wrap yarn

    around the stitches between the teeth (fig. 7).

    The extra 2 sl sts on each end of the row may

    also count as teeth.

    Eye stalk work in the round, and make as

    many of these for your beholder as you like.

    Six is a pretty good number.

    Rnd 1:With eye color, ch 2. 6 sc in 2nd ch

    from hook. (6) Sl st in first sc. Fasten off.Rnd 2:Jn with main color. 2sc in each st

    around. (12)

    Rnd 3:(Dec next 2 sts) around. (6)

    Rnds 4 - 10:Sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next 3

    sts.

    Rnds 11 - 14:Sc in each st around. Sl st in

    next st. Fasten off.

    If desired, make some stalks taller or shorter

    by adding or subtracting sc rows at the end.Sew in various positions on top of head.
