Um guia bibliográfico sobre C.S. Lewis e sua obra

APRESENTAÇÃO

A idéia de montar um guia bibliográfico sobre C.S. Lewis e sua obra surgiu

enquanto eu fazia uma pesquisa para meu Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso sobre as

três principais obras de J.R.R Tolkien. Após procurar em bibliotecas e livrarias

virtuais, percebi que não existem muitos livros, artigos e trabalhos acadêmicos em

português sobre Tolkien ou estudando suas obras. A pesquisa por referências

bibliográficas acontecia na mesma medida em que a escrita do meu trabalho evoluía.

Muitos dos trabalhos sobre Tolkien, alguns abordando o autor em conjunto com

Lewis, citavam referências a este. Eu anotava as referências que encontrava, em

inglês e português, mesmo quando não as utilizava; quando percebi a quantidade de

referências que já havia conseguido, comecei a esboçar o guia. Com a ajuda do editor

de imagens do site Polyvore, comecei a montar as primeiras ilustrações planejadas

para a capa. Espero que este guia bibliográfico sobre C.S. Lewis e sua obra possa

auxiliar as futuras pesquisas sobre o grande escritor.

INTRODUÇÃO

Clive Staples Lewis, ou C.S. Lewis, nasceu na Irlanda (atual Irlanda do Norte)

em 1898. Teólogo, poeta e escritor, “Jack”, nome pelo qual passou a ser conhecido

entre familiares e amigos, cresceu no meio dos livros da seleta biblioteca particular da

família. Quando tinha 10 anos, a morte da mãe fez com que ele se refugiasse ainda

mais no mundo das histórias infantis.

Lewis começou a se interessar por mitologia nórdica quando encontrou a obra

de Richard Wagner. Iniciou seus estudos com um tutor, sendo aceito no University

College, em Oxford, no entanto sua educação foi interrompida pelo serviço militar na

Primeira Guerra Mundial. Com o fim da guerra, Lewis retorna para Oxford e passou a

viver com a mãe e a filha desta de um amigo morto na guerra como maneira de

cumprir a promessa feita a ele.

Durante o período entre 1925-1954 ensinou no Magdalen College, e de 1954

até sua morte em Oxford. Lewis foi professor de Literatura Medieval e Renascentista

na Universidade de Cambridge; em Oxford conheceu vários escritores famosos e se

tornou amigo deles, incluindo J.R.R. Tolkien. Com esses amigos, formou o famoso

grupo Inklings, onde eles discutiam e liam entre si obras próprias que mais tarde

viraram sucessos mundiais.

Ateu convicto grande parte da vida, Lewis converteu-se ao catolicismo

durante essa época de sua vida. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, tornou-se muito

conhecido graças as suas palestras transmitidas por rádio e por seus escritos. Sua

obra mais famosa, As Crônicas de Nárnia, uma série de fábulas infantis, foi publicada

em 1950. C. S. Lewis faleceu em 1963.
