INTRODUCTION

The tank cleaning suggestions in this manual are guidelines and will be updated based on future experience. Sufficient tank cleaning should be performed after every discharge, irrespective of the next cargo to be loaded. Due to quality reasons many chemical products require ever-higher cleaning standards and improved analytical methods are able to detect any impurities or residues of prior cargoes. Survey companies will therefore perform more and more wall wash tests. Not only chlorides and water miscibility (Hydrocarbons) will be tested. Additionally the non volatile matter (NVM), the colour, the permanganate fading time (PTT), as well as ultra violet transmission (UV) will be tested. A.m. tests will be especially performed after vegetable or mineral oils, but also after various other restricted prior cargoes like paraffines, phthalates, olefines and other hydrocarbon products and chemicals. A fundamental understanding of the cargo to be cleaned as well as the cargo to be loaded is therefore of utmost importance for an efficient tank cleaning.

Before loading of sensitive cargoes it is advisable to clean tanks and lines finally with a suitable cleaning solution in order to achieve the required cleaning standard. The tank cleaning manual is designed to assist tank cleaning and does not constitute an instruction. CHEMTEC cannot be held responsible for the content of the manual and will not accept any liability. The resistance guidelines of the coating manufacturer have to be carefully observed.

PRE-CLEANING Pre-cleaning is the first cleaning step usualy carried out without cleaning additives in order to remove the major amount of product residue. The first cleaning step is of utmost importance and should be carfully selected. It can be very difficult to obtain a satisfactory cleaning result after an initial failure. The selection of the proper pre-cleaning procedure should be based on the physical properties and characteristics of the product to be cleaned.

Is the equilibrium pressure of the saturated vapour above a liquid expressed in bars at a specific temperature. The vapour pressure of a product is closely connected to the boiling point

Boiling point

Temperature at which a product exhibits a vapour pressure equal to the atmospheric pressure.

Flash point flammable products only

Temperature at which a product will give off enough flammable vapour to be ignited.

Explosive range Flammable range flammable products only

Is the range of gas concentration in air (%) between the lower and upper flammable (explosive) limits (LEL/UEL). Gas mixtures within this range are capable of being igneted and of burning.

Density Is the ratio of the mass of a volume of a product to the mass of an equal volume of fresh water (1,0). For a product of no or limited solubility, the density indicates whether it floats on water or sinks.

PRODUCTS WHICH ARE WATER SOLUBLE OR MISCIBLE • Water soluble or miscible products are easy to clean with water, the solubility of the product might increase at higher temperatures. The use of a cleaning solution is only advisable for reduction of the cleaning time or for smell removing (e.g. Phenol). PRODUCTS WITH A HIGH MELTING POINT • These products should be washed with a temperature above the melting point. During washing there should be no ballast water or cold cargoes adjacent to the tank to be cleaned. During cleaning special attention has to be taken on liquid and vapour line systems to avoid freezing/solidification at cold line segments. Washing as soon as possible after discharge is recommended.

PRODUCTS WITH A HIGH VISCOSITY • These products should be washed with a moderate or hot temperature. In general the viscosity is closely connected to the temperature and will decrease at higher temperature. During washing there should be no ballast water or cold cargoes adjacent to the tank to be cleaned. Washing as soon as possible after discharge is recommended.

The respective product characteristic of the product in question has to be observed. Some high viscose cargoes e.g some lub additives have to be pre-cleaned with a warm or moderate temperature.

VAPOUR PRESSURE/BOILING POINT • Products with a high vapour pressure (higher than 50 mbar at 200 C) can be removed from the tank by evapouration (ventilation). As always when ventilating special care must be taken to prevent the risk of explosion (flammable products) or towards toxic vapours. All safety precautions have to be taken. Products with low vapour pressure , or products which leave residues (NVM) or contain inhibitors should never be cleaned by evapouration (ventilation). The non-volatile matter (NVM) content in the specification of the product is a good indication to establish if a product might leave some residues. Substances containing inhibitors, even if the quantities are low must be washed thoroughly. Any inhibitor left in the tank is difficult to remove and has nearly always a negative influence on the wall wash and on the next product to be loaded. Products mixtures with different vapour pressure of the individual compounds or crude products should never be pre-washed hot and should not be cleaned by evapouration(ventilation).

FLASH POINT/FLAMMABLE RANGE

• The flashpoint is the lowest temperature at which a product give off sufficient gas to form a flammable gas mixture to be ignited. The flashpoint is measured in standard apparatus using a prescribed procedure (e.g. closed cup). • The flammable range/explosion range is the gas concentration in air of a respective product between the lower (LEL) and upper (UEL) explosion limits. Gas/air mixtures within this range are capable of being igneted and of burning. In an undefined atmosphere, the vapours in the tank may be in the flammable range

The only way to guarantee that an explosion cannot occur during washing is to make certain that there can be no source of ignition. (Reference is made to ISGOTT Chapter 9)

DENSITY / SPECIFIC GRAVITY • Is the ratio of the mass of a volume of a product to the mass of an equal volume of fresh water (1,0). For a product with limited or no solubility in water, a density below 1,0 indicates that the product float on the water, a density above 1,0 indicates that the product sink in water.

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS POLYMERIZATION • Polymerization is a poly-reaction of a monomer compound which molecule contains double bondings or rings. The poly-reaction can occure under following influenzes: * By an initiator (reaction partner) * By heat (thermic polymerization); * By light (photo polymerization) * By radiation (radiation polymerization) Some unsaturated compounds with one or more double bondings are able to polymerize: * Vinyl – compounds * Vinyliden – compounds * Acryl – compounds * Carbonyl – compounds (e.g. Aldehyde) * Styrene * Ethylene Oxide, Propylene Oxide * Ethylene, Propylene, Isobutylene, Butadiene and Isoprene

homo-polymerization = only one monomer is involved in the poly-reaction. co-polymerization = two different monomers are involved in the poly-reaction. polymeric = the product produced by the poli-reaction. To prevent the polymerization some products contain inhibitors The initial wash of these products should be carried out with cold (ambient) water. Washing with hot water may result in polimeric residues being left in tanks and lines, which are very difficult to remove. To avoid any polymerization by loss of inhibitor-protection it is also recommended to wash the tanks immediately after discharge. EVAPOURATION OF LIGHT SUBSTANCES • Cargoes which are mixtures of products with different vapour pressure and boiling point or cargoes which contains crude compounds should never be cleaned by evapouration (ventilation) and should never be pre-washed hot. The evapouration of the light substances from the mixture may result in residues being left in the tank, which are very difficult to remove. REACTION WITH WATER • An example for the reaction with water are the isocyanates (e.g. MDI or TDI). The reaction between water and isocyanates will produce urethane, which is insoluble and very difficult to remove. Therefore water can not be used to clean tanks from this kind of products.

These kind of products must be washed with a suitable solvent like Methylene Chloride or Monochlorbenzene. It is of utmost importance that the solvents used for cleaning as well as all used equipment is free of any moisture. A second example is Sulphuric Acid which reacts vigiriously with water in a very strong exothermic reaction (setting free large amount of heat). Furthermore deluted Sulphuric Acid is corrosive to stainless steel (in general between 10-90%). To absorb the heat and to minimize the corrosion of the stainless steel Sulphuric Acid must be initially washed without any interruption by large amounts of cold fresh water. The waste water has to be pumped continuously out without any delay. REACTIONS WITH OXYGEN, DRYING PRODUCTS • Drying and semi-drying vegetable and animal oils react with oxygen to form a varnish

like polymeric film which is very difficult to remove. Heat increases the reaction speed. Therefore the initial washing of these products have to be done with cold (ambient) water or a temperature of max 100 C above the melting point of the product. Drying also takes place when an tank is left uncleaned therefore washing as soon as possible after discharge is recommended. Heated cargoes in adjacent tanks should be avoided. In case of doubt if a vegetable or animal oil is non-drying or drying always use ambient water first.

REACTIONS WITH WATER HARDNESS COMPOUNDS • The water hardness is formed by the calcium and magnesium content of the water. Sea water contains a lot of calcium and magnesium and has therefore a very high water hardness. Some products like fatty acids and vegetable oils with a high free fatty acid content will formate white sticky residues (calcium and magnesium soaps) if they were cleaned with a water of a high water hardness (e.g. sea water).

Heat increase these reaction therefore if sea water has to be used the initial wash has to be done with a temperature of max 10 to 150C above the melting point of the product. • Note: 100C increase in temperature double the chemical reaction rate. The best method to pre-clean these kind of products is to prepare the necessary amount of fresh water for the pre-cleaning in a separate and clean tank and add a suitable water hardness remover. For suitable water hardness remover contact CHEMTEC Consulting GmbH If sea water or untreated freshwater has to be used for cleaning the formation of white residues or a white powdery film cannot be avoided. • For the removal of white residues see cleaning suggestion for Fatty Acids.

• A second example for a reaction with water hardness compounds is the Sodium Silicate Solution . Sodium Silicate Solution will formate calcium and magnesium silicates which are very hard to remove. Sodium Silicate Solution should be therefore washed with fresh water only and never with sea water.

FINAL-CLEANING Final-cleaning is the last cleaning step usually carried out in order to remove all product residues to reach the required cleaning standard. On certain products/product residues it is necessary to introduce a cleaner into the washing process to accomplish a more effective cleaning. For selection of the final cleaning procedure following items are of utmost importance: KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRODUCT TO BE CLEANED • Physical properties and characterristics of the product as explained before NATURE OF THE CARGO TO BE LOADED • Cleanliness requirements of the product to be loaded * Chemical standard: Visual clean, dry and free of smell or High purity standard: Visual clean, dry and free of smell plus additional wall wash requirements like: * Hydrocarbon-test (water miscibility) * Chloride-test * NVM-test (none volatile matters) * Colour * Permanganat time-test (PTT-test) * UV-test (ultra violett transmission) SELECTION OF THE PROPER CLEANING AGENT • The selection of the proper cleaning agent depends on the following possibilities to remove a not water soluble product residues: * Emulsification * Saponification * Combination of emulsification and saponification * Soluble/reactive with acid * Solving by a chemical/product * Smell removal

Smell removal continued •• To neutralise the smell of some chemicals (e.g. Acrylate, Nitrobenzene or Pygas) the use of a smell killer may be recommended. Special attention should be given to gaskets in the tank- and cleaning hatches. If the next cargo is a sensitive cargo the gaskets should be cleaned or renewed. • Our recommended smell remover is a solution of 0,4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC and 2% P3 NA from Henkel . • A smell killer/remover should preferably used in combination with a emulsifier. • The tanks should be cleaned by recirculation to guarantee that each drop of the smell producing cargo inside of cargo lines, stripping line, pumps and valve seats will be removed. • The recommended cleaning temperature is 600 C • Minor residues of a smell producing cargo left in lines, valves and pumps (including pump cofferdams) can contaminate a sensitive cargo.

SPECIFIC CLEANING SUGGESTIONS TALL OIL (CRUDE) • Tall oil is an oxidising oil and through reaction with oxygen of the atmosphere it dries and

hardens (drying oil). Oxidation occurs in three phases: liquid, gum and solid. • Tankcleaning should be therefore executed as soon as possible after discharge. STEP 1 Butterworth the tank 1 hour with hot seawater (60-70° C.) STEP 2 Butterworth the tank 1hour with hot seawater (75° C.). Check if the tank is free of sediments before recirculation cleaning will be started. STEP 3 Flush the tank 10 minutes with fresh water to remove the residues of seawater. STEP 4 Prepare on of the following cleaning solution with fresh water: • 0,4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC or alternatively • 0,4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC • 2,5% Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide • 5% P3 Grato 50 Marine Butterworth the tank 1,5 hour by recirculation. The cleaning temperature should be approx 600 C (not higher). STEP 5 Butterworth the tank 1 hour with hot seawater (70-80° C.) TALL OIL (Crude) continued Inspect the tank: Depending on the Fatty Acid and Resin Acid content of the Crude Tall Oil it might be possible that some minor spots of sticky brownish residues are present. STEP 8 (if applicable) To remove these residues butterworth the tank with one of the following solution: • 3-5% phosphoric acid and 0.4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC; or • 3-5% nitric acid and 0.4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC; or • 2-5% of a metal brightner (P3 T1166 Marine) and 0,4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC • For Epoxy Coatings use 2% P3 T1166 Marine and 0,4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC The cleaning temperature should be moderate (50°C.) FATTY ACID OILS/FATS • Fatty acid oils/fats will react with seawater as well as with untreated fresh water and will formate magnesium and calcium soaps (white residues). If possible seawater or untreated freshwater (high water hardness) should not be used for pre-cleaning. STEP 1 Butterworth the tanks 1-1,5 hour with a treated freshwater, which should be prepared in a separate tank. The cleaning temperature should be approx. 20-250C above the melting point of the product. • For effictive additives contact CHEMTEC Consulting GmbH. If the use of seawater cannot be avoided butterworth the tank for 1-1,5 hour with seawater of a temperature of 10 -150 C above the melting point of the product. After a sufficient pre-cleaning the temperature can be increased to 20-250 C above the melting point of the product. STEP 2 If seawater was used in STEP 1: Flush the tank 10 minutes with fresh water to remove the residues of seawater. STEP 3 Prepare the following cleaning solution in fresh water: • 0.4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC • 5% P3 Grato 50 Marine Butterworth the tank 1.5 hours with the prepared solution by recirculation. The temperature should be approx. 70-80°C.

FISH OIL • Fish oil should never be washed hot (varnish formation) • Fish oil is an oxidising oil and through reaction with oxygen in the atmosphere it dries and

hardens. • Tank cleaning should be executed as soon as possible after discharge. • Avoid higher temperatures (e.g. steaming) and heated cargoes in adjacent tanks. STEP 1 Butterworth the tank 2 hours with cold/ambient (max. 30°C.) seawater and pump the waste water without any delay continuously out. Check if the tank is free of sediments before starting to clean as per step 2 and 3. STEP 2 Flush the tank and line system shortly with fresh water to remove the seawater residues STEP 3 Prepare the following cleaning solution in fresh water. • 0,4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC or alternatively • 0,4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC • 2,5% Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide • 5% P3 Grato 50 Marine Butterworth the tank 2,0 hour by recirculation. If Caustic is used the cleaning temperature should be not higher than 600 C. If P3 Grato 50 Marine is used the cleaning temperature can be 70-800 C STEP 4 Butterworth the tank 1 hours with hot seawater (70- 80°C). STEP 5 Flush the tank with fresh water. STEP 6 Ventilate, mop and dry the tank

LATEX-NATURAL & SYNTETIC • Latex polymerise if getting dry • Latex polymerise at temperatures above 30°C. • Always avoid warm temperatures and warm cargoes in adjacent tanks. • Load the tank to 100% to avoid dryed residues at tank top. • To keep the tank humid during discharge introduce slightly steam into the tank but avoid

any heat up. • Wash the tank down directly after discharge and avoid any delay. STEP 1 Butterworth the tank after discharge without any delay for 2 hours with cold fresh water and inject from the beginning on the CTC-Cleaner-VLC (see cleaning method 3). Calculate for approximately 10 m3 cleaning water 1 pail of the CTC-Cleaner-VLC (20 kg) If it is not possible to discharge the slop directly ashore leave the waste water inside the tank until discharge at sea is possible. Keep the tank closed to maintain the humidity. STEP 2 Pump the waste water overboard and continue to butterworth 1.5 hours with cold seawater and inject simultaneously the CTC-Cleaner-VLC. STEP 3 Flush the tank 30 minutes with fresh water STEP 5 Ventilate, mop and dry the tank. Some minor dryed latex residues which could be present on heating coils and pump body have to be removed manually.

LATEX-NATURAL & SYNTETIC (continued) Recommended preparations before loading and discharge of Latex: • Prepare the loading/discharge connection directly at the pump stack of the respective tank

and flange off the line to the manifold. Install a valve at this connection and use hoses for the shore connection (necessary lenght should be as short as possible).

• Close the drop line inside the tank by a flange or alternatively with a wooden plug. If a plug has to be used cover this with plastic foil (at least 3 layers) and fix it with a stainless steel band. For loading and discharge use the deepwell pump only.

• All other connections and openings inside the tank should be dismantled, flanged off or protected as discribed above (e.g. steam, nitrogen, vapour line connections etc.).

• Fixed tank cleaning machines should be dismantled and blinde flanged.

• Tank dome hatches and butterworth hatches including gaskets should be protected with a plastic foil which has to be placed between the dome and the hatch.

• Before loading steam the tank with very low pressure (1 bar) to make sure that the bulkheads, tank top, bottom and the lines inside the tank are humid but avoid any heat up.

• All equipment that might come into contact with the Latex should be washed with fresh water so they are humid before the loading takes place.

• Load the tanks 100% and into the tankdomes to prevent that the Latex comes into contact with air during the voyage. During loading the vessel must be therefore trimmed and kept on even keel to prevent airpockets in the tank.

• Before discharge remove the plugs of the vapour connection and steam connection

and flush all equipment that might come into contact with Latex with fresh water

• During discharge keep the tank closed to keep the humidity.

LUBE ADDITIVES 1 • Wide range of different types of additives for Luboil and Gasoil. • Light products with low viscosity until dark products with very high viscosity. • Soluble in light Baseoil and Gasoil • Some Lube Additives react with hot water producing gluey/sticky residues STEP 1 –PRE-CLEANING

• The pre-cleaning should be carried out with hot base oil or gasoil. • Fill 3-5 m3 gasoil or light baseoil into the tank and butterworth the tank sufficiently by

recirculation. • If baseoil is used the cleaning temperature should be above 60° C. • If gasoil is used the temperature should not exceed 50° C (flashpoint). STEP 2 Butterworth the tank 2 hours with hot seawater or freshwater (70-80°C). STEP 3 Prepare the following cleaning solution in freshwater or seawater: • 0,4 % CTC-Cleaner-VLC Butterworth the tank 1,5 to 2,0 hours by recirculation. The temperature should be approx. 70°C. The temperature can be achieved/maintained by means of heating coils, or going via the butterworth heater.

Depending on the amount of cargo residues the solution can be used for 1 to 3 tanks.

STEP 4 Rinse the tank with fresh water. STEP 5 Ventilate, mop and dry the tank.

LUBE ADDITIVES continued Further Cleaning Suggestions: • For some Lube Additives a pre-cleaning with baseoil or gasoil is not necessary. After butterworthing with warm/moderate water followed by hot water the residues can be removed by recirculation of a solution of 0,4 % CTC-Cleaner-VLC or by injection of the CTC-Cleaner-VLC into the butterworth system during the hot wash.. The suitability of the CTC-Cleaner-VLC solution for the Lube Additive in question can be easily pre-tested in a glas bottle. • Some Lub Additives with higher viscosity can be removed by recirculation of a solution of 0.4% CTC-cleaner-VLC and 5% P3 Grato 50 Marine. • Residues of Lube Additives can be sprayed and manually removed with undiluted P3 Grato 50 Marine. • Residues of Lube Additives can be as well sprayed and manually removed by a gasoil.

LUBOILS • Wide range of different products from very light and thin transformer or spindle oils to heavy and dark cylinder or gear oils. • Different carriage temperatures and heating requirements depending on the viscosity. • The viscosity will decrease with increasing temperature. • High/No flash point STEP 1 Butterworth the tanks 1-1,5 hours with hot seawater or freshwater (70-800C).

STEP 2 Prepare the following cleaning solution in freshwater or seawater: • 0,4 % CTC-Cleaner-VLC Butterworth the tank 1,5 hours by recirculation with a temperature of approx 700 C. The necessary temperature can be achieved/maintained by means of heating coils, or going via the butterworth heater.

Depending on the amount of cargo residues the solution can be used for 1 to 3 tanks.

STEP 4 Butterworth the tank for 0,5 hours with hot fresh water. STEP 5 Ventilate, mop and dry the tank. • Instead of recirculation cleaning the CTC-Cleaner-VLC can be as well injected into the butterworth system (see cleaning method 3). The use of the CTC-Cleaner-VLC is not recommended for cleaning of Fueloils/Bunkeroils These products have to be pre-cleaned with water of a warm to moderate temperature followed by a recirculation cleaning with gasoil.

LUBOILS continued To reduce the amount of slops the following cleaning procedure is recommended: STEP 1 Pre-cleaning (see drawing method 4, next page) • Depending on the tank size and hight fill the necessary amount of freshwater or seawater into the service tank. • Butterworth all tanks to be cleaned 1-1,5 hour useing the water from the service tank • Heat the water by means of heating coils, cargo heatexchanger or going via the butterworth heater • The pre-cleaning temperature should be between 70 and 800 C • Pump the waste water from the tanks to be cleaned back to service tank (over top). STEP 2 Solution-cleaning (see drawing method 4, next page) • Depending of tank size and hight fill the necessary amount of freshwater or seawater into the service tank. • Add for each 10 m3 of water one pail CTC-Cleaner-VLC (0,2%) • Butterworth all tanks to be cleaned 1-1,5 hour useing the solution from the service tank. • Heat the Solution by means of heating coils, cargo heatexchanger or going via the butterworth heater. • The cleaning temperature should be approx 700 C • Pump the used solution from the tanks to be cleaned back to service tank (over top).

PHENOL Direct after discharge flush lines and tanks thoroughly with hot fresh water or demi water and recirculate. This is done to bring the freezing point down prior to the prescribed tank cleaning procedure. Demi water will be used if the pre-wash quantity can be pumped ashore. STEP 1 Butterworth the tanks 1,5-2 hours with hot seawater or freshwater (800C). STEP 2 Prepare the following cleaning solution in freshwater:

SLACK WAX (Paraffine with a high oil content and a high melting point) STEP 1 Steam the tank for approx. 1-1,5 hour. The temperature should be at least 20°C above the melting point of the slack wax. STEP 2 Butterworth the tank 1-1,5 hour directly after steaming with hot seawater or hot fresh water. Let the water flow on deck until the required temperature has been reached. The temperature during the cleaning should be 20°C. above the melting point of the wax. The cleaning time should be sufficiently long to reach the melting point of the wax. STEP 3 Due not interrupt the cleaning process and continue to butterworth the tank with hot seawater or freshwater for another hour and inject the CTC-Cleaner-VLC (see method 3). Therefore mix the CTC-Cleaner-VLC into a drum with water (1 to 2 pails/100 litres water) and inject the mixture simultaneously into the butterworth line during cleaning. The necessary amount to be injected depends on the consumption and number of butterworth machines. Calculate for 10-15 m3 of wash water 1 pail CTC-Cleaner-VLC (20 l).

STEP 3 Due not interrupt the cleaning process and continue to butterworth the tank with hot seawater or freshwater for another hour and inject the CTC-Cleaner-VLC (see method 3). PALM FATTY ACID • Palm Fatty Acid will react with seawater as well as with untreated fresh water and will formate magnesium and calcium soaps (white sticky residues). • If possible seawater or untreated freshwater should not be used for pre-cleaning. STEP 1 Butterworth the tanks 1-1,5 hour with a treated freshwater, which should be prepared in a separate tank. The pre-cleaning temperature can be than 20-250C above the melting point of the product. • For effictive additives contact CHEMTEC Consulting GmbH. If the use of seawater cannot be avoided butterworth the tank for 1-1,5 hour with seawater of a temperature of 10 -150 C above the melting point of the product. After a sufficient pre-cleaning the temperature can be increased to 20-250 C above the melting point of the product. STEP 2 If seawater was used in STEP 1: Flush the tank 10 minutes with fresh water to remove the residues of seawater. STEP 3 Prepare the following cleaning solution in fresh water: • 0.4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC • 5% P3 Grato 50 Marine Butterworth the tank 1.5 hours with the prepared solution by recirculation. The temperature should be approx. 70-80°C.

SLURRY (NOT CLAY SLURRY) • Through reaction with CO2 in the atmosphere the Slurry dries and hardens. • Tankcleaning should be executed as soon as possible after discharge. • Avoid heated cargoes in adjacent tanks. • During cleaning pump the wastewater direct overboard and not into a sloptank. • Do not mix different grades of Slurry (reaction between an-ionic and kat-ionic products). STEP 1 Butterworth the tank direct after discharge with cold fresh water for about 30 minutes. STEP 2 Butterworth the tank 2 hours with 40° C. warm seawater. STEP 3 Handhose the tank with seawater until the tank is free of slurry residues. (only a white film of slurry is left) STEP 4 For cleaning the cargolines fill 15 m3 of seawater into the tank and pump this water with maximum pressure out to both sides of the manifold and dead ends. STEP 5 Drain and strip the tank and remove the sea water residues by a fresh water flush. STEP 6 Prepare the following cleaning solution in fresh water: • 0.4% CTC-Cleaner-VLC Example: 5 m3 fresh water • 10% Nitric Acid 1 pail CTC-Cleaner-VLC (20ltr) 500 ltr Nitric Acid (63%) Butterworth the tank for 2 hours by recirculation with the prepared solution (T.= ambient).

VEGETABLE AND ANIMAL OILS (see attached list) • For effective cleaning of animal and vegetable oils the first cleaning step is of utmost

importance. Vegetable oils are divided in:

• Non-drying products • Semi-drying products • Drying products • Fatty acids Non Drying Products STEP 1 Butterworth the tank with seawater or freshwater with a temperature 20°C. above the melting point of the product to be cleaned. After sufficient pre-cleaning of at least 1.5 hours the temperature can be increased. Drying and Semi-drying Products • These are oxidising products and through reaction with oxygen they will dry and

harden. • Tankcleaning should be executed as soon as possible after discharge. • High temperatures (e.g. cleaning or steaming) and heated cargoes in adjacent tanks

should be avoided. STEP 1 Butterworth the tank with cold to warm seawater or freshwater. If the product has a higher melting point butterworth the tank with seawater or freshwater with a temperature maximum 10°C above the melting point of the product. After sufficient pre-cleaning of at least 1.5 - 2 hours the temperature can be increased. Fatty Acids or vegetable/animal oils with a high free fatty acid content See the cleaning suggestion of Fatty Acids.
