ST. VINCENT de PAUL Today, we celebrate “Good Shepherd Sunday” where we reflect on Jesus’ love and care for us.

Shepherding is serious business. It means that we cannot run away. It calls us to commit ourselves to good deeds, such as caring for the sick, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, forgiving those who wrong us, loving others as God has loved us. These good deeds are the very “stuff” of our everyday living and loving, in our families and in our service to the poor. St. Mary’s Vincentians are committed to helping the many poor among us.

Lord Jesus, give us the grace to be “Good Shepherds,”

strengthen us to be hope for others. For those who live in

loneliness, may they know the healing bond of friendship. For

those whose labor is burdensome and whose wages are

inadequate, may they receive employment worthy of their

dignity. For the sick and the dying, may they know Christ’s

healing through all Vincentians. Amen.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, On this Good Shepherd Sunday, let us pray for those men who God created to become his priests in the Archdiocese of Boston. First let us pray for the 5 men who were ordained as transitional deacons and will be ordained priests by Cardinal O’Malley on May 23, 2015. Let us also pray for the men who have answered the Lord’s call and have entered formation and studies for the Archdiocese of Boston. Currently 66 men study at five seminaries: Pope Saint John XXIII in Weston, St. John Seminary in Brighton, North American College in Rome, Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Brookline, and Our Lady of Providence in Rhode Island. Seminary is a time of discernment and formation. Here the man gains the confidence that God made him to be a priest. Sometimes, he discovers after much prayer and effort that God has another vocation or plan for him. It is also time when the Church can decide that a man is suitable, qualified and able to perform as a priest. I know about this discernment part because I attended three years of seminary and then left for another three years. I returned to complete my studies after the signs that I had a vocation became clearer (THANK GOD). Let us also pray for the men who are thinking about the Seminary. Last month, the Vocation Office had a retreat for over 40 men who were actively discerning applying to the Seminary. Let’s keep praying. Let us pray for men who God wants to become priests but who are ignoring the call or don’t know it themselves. Let us pray that they don’t wait too long or they don’t live in a reckless way that could mess them up from this life of love and joy. There are so many men who God wants to be priests – the trouble is it’s hard for them to discover it in the world we live in. Let us add some prayers for young teenage males and boys.that they can grow up in families where parents will encourage their sons to consider priesthood. Every normal healthy Catholic man should consider whether God made them to be a priest. And, finally, let us pray for the women with whom God wants to share His joy through the consecrated and religious life. We will pray for their discernment and happiness, and I will write more about praying for these women in next Sunday’s bulletin. Father Michael

God, the source of creation and love

God, the source of creation and love, You invite each

of us to serve you through the life which is your gift.

May your grace encourage men and women to

heights of holiness through service to the Church as

priests, sisters, brothers and lay ministers. Make me

an instrument to encourage others to give of

themselves and challenge me to do the same. Amen.

APRIL APPEAL – LAST WEEKEND Last weekend was our Semi-Annual Appeal. Thank you to all who have contributed so far. Every year, we ask every parishioner to make a donation in the fall and the spring to cover our heating and snow plowing expenses. It has been the practice at St. Mary’s to have a Semi-Annual appeal ra-ther than having a Grand Annual Collection once a year. Obviously, this was a difficult winter with so many snow-storms on the weekends. We know this affected everyone’s work schedule and earning power. Many of you have been very generous towards this appeal in the past. We ask every-one to be as generous as possible for this important collec-tion. It will help us manage our expenses and be good stew-ards of the parish. If you have not contributed to this im-portant collection but would like to, please mail or deliver your contribution to the rectory, or drop it in the collection basket.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER Please remember that we gather to praise God on Sunday mornings by praying the Divine Office. Throughout the world, priests, deacons, religious communities, seminaries and parishes gather at different times of the day to bless the Lord. This short service includes a hymn, psalms and inter-cessory prayers. It begins at 7:30 a.m. and lasts about 20 minutes. About 12-15 people attend on a regular basis so you won’t be alone if you come. The prayer booklet is pro-vided so all you have to do is show up in the pews in front of the altar of the church on Sunday.

Fourth Sunday of Easter 5

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK We encourage everyone to continue reading the Acts of the Apostles this week … ACTS OF THE APOSTLES – CHAPTER 20 PART 2 Eutychus Restored to Life. On the first day of the week when we gathered to break bread, Paul spoke to them because he was going to leave on the next day, and he kept on speaking until midnight. There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were gathered, and a young man named Eutychus who was sitting on the window sill was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. Once overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and when he was picked up, he was dead. Paul went down, threw himself upon him, and said as he embraced him, “Don’t be alarmed; there is life in him.” Then he returned upstairs, broke the bread, and ate; after a long conversation that lasted until daybreak, he departed. And they took the boy away alive and were immeasurably comforted.

We want to keep them connected with our program and all the support that being at St May's gives them every day they are here with us. Student Registration for the upcoming academic year has begun. The program will start again in September, 2015. Please contact Jennifer Acuna (781-577-2262) if you are would like your child to be in our program or would consider volunteering at the St Mary After School Program.

THANKS FOR BULLETIN ADVERTISEMENTS We are grateful to all the business owners who support Saint Mary’s through their advertisements on the back page of the bulletin. We encourage all parishioners to patronize these sponsors of our bulletin. It’s a great way to support one another and build community. Thank you.

ATTACKS ON GOD 28 Ethiopians killed in new Islamic State massacre Islamic State terrorists in Libya killed 28 Ethiopian Christians, describing them as representatives of the “enemy Ethiopian Church,” in a new massacre. A video that showed the beheading of 12 men and the shooting of 16 others was released on April 19. The killings were grotesquely similar to the beheading of 21 Coptic Christians in another video made public in February. In the new video, a spokesman for the Islamic State said that the victims were “followers of the cross,” representing “the nation of the cross.” The video also showed images of the destruction of Christian churches and cemeteries, and included a warning for Christians to convert to Islam or face a similar fate.

Q & A – LITURGY & SACRAMENTS We continue with our “Question & Answer” series about Liturgy and the Sacraments. The text is taken from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. • How does the Church on earth celebrate the liturgy? The Church on earth celebrates the liturgy as a priestly people in which each one acts according to his proper function in the unity of the Holy Spirit. The baptized offer themselves in a spiritual sacrifice; the ordained ministers celebrate according to the Order they received for the service of all the members of the Church; the bishops and priests act in the Person of Christ the Head.

Rachel mourns her children; She refuses to be consoled, because her children are no more. Thus says the Lord: “Cease from your cries of mourning. Wipe the tears from your eyes…There is hope for your future.”

Jeremiah 31:15-17

Archdiocese of Boston

Project Rachel is a confidential Catholic outreach ministry offering hope and healing to women and men hurting from past abortions. Trust in the tender embrace of God’s merciful love.
