C R V N T I O N S IN B SIN OF LIM IN MIDDLE GESSummary

Owing to the convenient geographical and strategic position, the bordering linebetween the S e r i a n lands, and well-developed road network, numerous settlementswere formed in the basin of the Lim River in the Middle Ages. These were smaller orlarger caravan stations, marketplaces, fortified towns or frontier fortifications. In thispaper we have presented, on the basis of literature and the p u l i s h e and u n p u l i s h ematerial from the Archives ofDubrovnik, only those settlements in the basin of the Limwhich had the character of caravan station. The caravan traffic through the basin ofthe Lim evolved, judging surviving documents, from the middle of the 14th century,and was very intensive in the first four decades of the 15th century. Many developedmarketplaces in the Lim basin had the character of caravan stations all the time: peopleand cattle either had break there, rested, or stayed overnight on their long journeys.Prijepolje had special role in the growth of the caravan traffic in the basin of the Lim,because it was not only the most famous caravan station and transit centre, but also thebest developed and most famous economic centre in the Lim basin. Other caravanstations can classified into two groups: the first comprises those which were activeat the end of the 14th and in the first two decades of the 15th century (Bukovica, thehouse of r i i l Kucinic, St Peter s church, Lim, St Nicholas s church in Banja, Ivanje,Ravno and the Mili church), while the second includes those that reached their peak inthe 1420ies and 1430ies, in the period of when economic ties between Dubrovnik, theDespotate and the Mediterranean (Breza, the Grlica church, Pljevlja, Komarani, Drenova, Brodarevo) were very intensive.
