XNTRODUCCIONCuand o Pedro de Valdivia recorri el antigu o caminodel Inca, ya reconocido p or Almagro luego de sufracasada expedicin a Chile en 1536, observ u npaisaje de gran aridez que se interru mp a slo poralgunos oasis en la p uerta d el despoblado de Atacama.De all su natu ral imp resin al enfrentarse con el vallede Copiap, el qu e reverdeca con im portantes cultivosy ganad era de los pu eblos indgenas, hecho qu e se fuerepitiendo y m ultiplicando hacia el sur , hastaintroducirse en el valle de Chile o Aconcagua a finesde 1540.Las descrip ciones de Gernimo de Bibar, el Cron istade la Conqu ista, nos p rueban que el Norte Chico,desde los inicios de nuestra historia escrita,presentaba un ambiente d e aridez, contrapesado porescasas precipitaciones y por los cursos fluvialesprodu cto de la nieve acum ulada en la alta cordillera,que bajan entr ecruzh do se en valles y quebradashasta llegar al mar.Los ejes fluviales de los ros Copiap, Hu asco. Elqu i,Limari y Ch oapa, alimentad os por nu merososafluentes qu e nacen de la vertiente de los Andes y delcomp licado relieve que se desgrana hacia la costa,reciben en los perodos invernales un mengu adoaporte de las lluv ias estacionales. el cual au m entapaulatinamente hacia el sur. La vegetacin es escasa,en u n frgil equilibrio con la natu raleza,encontrndose concentrad a en los valles ydesp arrah ada en miles de quebradas interiores,rincones atractivos para la faun a y para el hom bre,que ingresa por pr imera vez a nu estro territorio hacems de 12.000 aos.E L P A L E O I N D I O ( 1 2 0 0 0 - 8 0 0 0 a. C. )Por aqu ellos aos nuestro p laneta sufra los efectos dela ltima glaciacin, la cual p rovocaba importan tescambios climticos en el Norte Chico, alterand o enalguna medida el p aisaje. La cord illera de los Andesposea un m ayor cmu lo de nieves eternas y, si bien elclima m antena su carcter d istintivo de aridez, losros y quebradas concentraban mejores recursos deagua y la fauna tena u na m ayor variedad que laactual. Era la 6poca en qu e convivan especies de grantamafio, como fue el caballo americano ( E q u u o sp.) , lmastod onte, los desdentados de gran alzada( M e g a t h e r i u m ) el ciervo de los pan tanos ( A n t i f e r ) , lpaleolama. el gu anaco y la vicua, estos ltimoshabituados a un rgimen d e movilidad entre los vallesy quebradas y la alta cordillera. INTRODUCTIONWhen Pedro d e Valdivia traveled the Inca Highway,previously discovered by Diego de Almagro after hisunsuccessful expedition to Chile in 1536, he observeda barren landscape. broken only by a few oases at th ethreshold of the uninhabited Atacama Desert. Thus ,he w as understandably impressed when heencountered the Copiap Valley, green with extensiveplantations and alive with the dom esticated animals ofthe aboriginal commu nities. This spectacle becameincreasingly comm on as he journ eyed sou th. finallvreaching ih e Valley of Ch ile-(orAconcagua Valley) b ythe end of 1540.Gernimo d e Bibar, chronicler of the conquest of thispart of America, describes the Norte Chico as an aridzone, mitigated by sparse precipitation and bystreams and rivers fed from th e snow th ataccumuiated on the high mountain peaks.The fluvial axes o f the Copiap, Hu asco, Elqui, Limariand Choap a Rivers, fed by th e num erous tributariedtha t originate on th e western slope of the AndesMountains and t he ru gged topography whichdescends to th e coast, receive rainfall in th e winter,meager in the north and gradually more abundanttoward the south . The Andes Mou ntains had abnorm allyhigh amou nts of snowp ack so that even though th eregion's climate rem ained arid , th e river valleys andravines received m ore w ater, and wildlife w as morevaried than it is today. This was a time when largemamm als roamed the land. such as: the Am ericanhorse (Equuosp.); th e mastod on; the gian t.edentulous sloth ( M e g a t h e r i u m ) ; he marsh d eer( A n t i fe r N i e m e y e r i ) ;th e extinct llama ( P a l c o -L la m asp.); and th e guanaco and vicua ; these latter twoshifting seasonally between the valleys and th e highcordillera. Th e hu nters of the Paleo-Indian period w hocame from th e north, swept across this area in p ursuitof these largq animals.The ar chaeological site of Quereo. located only a fewkilometers south of the city of Los Vilos. providesevidence of man's early occupation of this territory .Here, the rem ains were found of a Pleistocene fau nalike th e one described earlier, bearing signs o f havingbeen hu nted and butchered by the first inhabitants.Evidently. these hun ters did not utilize a lithic
