KU PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE RECORD

A. Job Responsibilities I have a joint appointment at the University of Kansas [Biodiversity Institute (50%), Kansas Biological Survey (50%)] and joined KU as an Assistant Scientist in the Kansas Biological Survey in 1988. Half of my appointment in the Biological Survey was shifted to the R.L. McGregor Herbarium in 1992 (which became a unit within the Natural History Museum in 1994 and, later, the Biodiversity Institute. Kansas Biological Survey (KBS) My primary responsibilities in the KBS are as the coordinator and botanist for the Kansas Natural Heritage Inventory. The mission of the Kansas Natural Heritage Inventory is to collect, manage, and disseminate information about the biological diversity of the state. Data are gathered via ground, aerial, and satellite surveys, and spatial and text data about plants, animals, and natural communities are managed in core databases. The work of the Inventory is strongly service-oriented, with staff members working with public and private decision-makers to provide early notification of potential resource conflicts, to guide land use decisions, and to develop conservation priorities. Primary responsibilities of the coordinator include administration (supervising three full-time staff members, internal budgeting, and planning), coordination of activities with other programs of the KBS and a national and international network of heritage programs, and representing the Inventory and KBS on local, state, and regional committees and work groups. The coordinator pursues external funding in support of program activities and assists with data gathering, processing, and analysis. The Heritage botanist identifies globally and regionally rare or declining plant species, gathers data about those species, and integrates those data with others accumulated by Inventory scientists. As a research scientist in the KBS, the botanist also conducts and publishes scholarly research in his/her field of expertise and seeks funding in support of programmatic and individual research initiatives. Biodiversity Institute (BI) Curators in the BI have six areas of accountability: collections curation, public programs and outreach, administration, teaching, research, and professional service. They maintain and implement the highest standards of collection stewardship with regard to acquisitions, accessions, curation, conservation, data management, and collection use in research, education, and public service. They contribute to the BI’s public programs and outreach, and administer the staff and resources of their divisions in a responsible and productive manner. Curators demonstrate success in teaching, advising, training, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students associated with BI and studying BI-related disciplines, and in mentoring high school students who wish to study in the BI. Likewise, faculty-curators maintain a productive research program, and they provide service to the broader university community, to their disciplines and professional societies, and to the national and international scientific community. My curatorial responsibilities in the BI are fulfilled through the R.L. McGregor Herbarium (Index Herbariorum acronym = KANU) in the Botany Division. Established in 1866 and dedicated in 1990 to the study of the Great Plains flora, the specimens and supporting materials housed in KANU comprise the largest single collection documenting the floristic diversity of the grassland biome of central North

America, with ca. 400,000 extant plant specimens, 255,000 specimen database records, 20,000 library items, and 51,000 photographic slides. KANU ranks in the top 5% of U.S. herbaria in the number of accessioned specimens. It currently has two 50% FTE curators, one 100% FTE collections manager, one adjunct curator, one post-doc, and one doctoral student. RESEARCH RECORD
