Suriname: He was working as an ITEC expert/ advisor to the Government of
Suriname to utilise their dry lands more productively for agriculture. Strategies were
formulated to utilise the natively adopted crop varieties and new technologies to
achieve sustainable production. An agricultural development project was prepared for
Suriname to effectively utilise their dry lands. The main task was to evolve solutionsfor increasing the agricultural productivity of dry land environments

and his main task, in addition to teaching was to develop new water use
management practices in the arid severely arid areas of Kuwait. He could develop
water management practices for date palm, potato, maize, Cucumber and barley, for
the arid areas of Kuwait. His main task was to address the constraints of stressed
environments and to formulate solutions for increasing the agricultural productivity of
moisture stressed environments
Mozambique: At the initiative of ADRA, a US based NGO, the main task in
Mozambique was to develop a dry land use policy/technology package for
Mozambique, utilising cashew. Training programmes to few batches of extension
officers and farmers were also conducted for the sustainable use of dry lands. The
main objective was to address the constraints of dry land farming areas and to
formulate solutions for increasing the agricultural productivity of Mozambique
Malawi: Here again, the task was todevelop a project for the utilisation of the dry
lands, to achieve food security of the rural farmers. Cashew, pulses and cereals were
the candidate crops. The task was to address the constraints of dry land farming
areas and to formulate situation specific solutions for increasing the agricultural
productivity of rain fed lands
Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Angola: The main tasks
in these nations were to conduct a resource analysis and a feasibility study for using
the dry lands for organic agriculture, utilising cereals, pulses, oil seeds and fruits as
the candidate crops. The proposal was for increasing agricultural production. It wasalso indented to analyse the constraints of dry lands and to develop scientific
methods/ techniques to improve the productivity of dry lands
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: The task assigned in KSA was to develop a land use
policy strategy in the GAZAN area of KSA, to utilize their arid lands for the production
of banana, vegetables and cashew. The main objective was to formulate methods
and strategies to increase the water productivity of moisture stressed areas and to
achieve water use efficiency, so as to optimise/ increase productivity of the arid
areas.

PRECOCIOUS CASHEW DWARF identified by Dr M Abdul Salam
PRECOCIOUS CASHEW DWARF
For the first time in the history of cashew research in the country, the applicant
identified a high yielding cashew dwarf. This is a highly precocious type capable of
bearing right from the first year of planting. This is a dwarf and compact type, suitable
for high density planting. This variety offers considerable scope to revolutionize the
cashew nut production and export of kernels from the country.
