Te yw’r ddiod fwyaf cyffredin yn y byd, ac amcangyfrifir fod tua 2 biliwn o bobl yn deffro gyda phaned o de bob bore. Yn ogystal â bod yn symbol o ddiwylliant a thraddodiad, gwelwyd fod te, a the gwyrdd yn fwyaf arbennig, yn meddu ar nodweddion gwrthfacterol yn erbyn sawl math o facteria. Mae’r ddelwedd hon yn dangos crynodiadau amrywiol o de gwyrdd a’i allu i ladd Methilin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Mewn oes lle cytunir fod ymwrthedd i wrthfiotigau yn drychineb byd-eang sy’n gyfrifol am 700,000 o farwolaethau’r flwyddyn, a allai te gwyrdd gael effaith ar y frwydr yn erbyn y bacteria nerthol hyn?

Sophie DaviesThe antibacterial activity of green tea against the deadly MRSA superbug

Tea is the most commonly consumed beverage worldwide, with an estimated 2 billion people waking up to a cup of tea every morning. In addition to being a symbol of culture and tradition, tea, in particular green tea, has been shown to possess antibacterial properties against several strains of bacteria. This image demonstrates varying concentrations of green tea and its ability to kill Methilin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA). In an age where antibiotic resistance has been deemed a global catastrophe responsible for 700,000 deaths per year, could green tea have a significant impact in the fight against superbugs?

Mae’r llun hwn yn dangos robin goch ifanc, sy’n gorwedd ar ochr y ffordd ar ôl cael ei daro a’i ladd gan gar oedd yn mynd heibio. Ac yntau newydd adael y nyth, cafodd bywyd yr aderyn ifanc hwn ei derfynu gan gerbyd, ffawd sydd, yn anffodus, yn aros miliynau o anifeiliaid gwyllt yng nghefn gwlad Prydain bob blwyddyn. Mae ymchwil a ariennir gan KESS ym Mhrosiect Splatter ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd yn gobeithio canfod beth yw gwir effaith ffyrdd ar ein bywyd gwyll, ac i ddechrau codi ymwybyddiaeth o berygl ffyrdd i anifeiliaid, yn ogystal â chymryd camau i leihau nifer y colledion anffodus a diangen o’r fath.

This image shows a juvenile robin, lying at the side of the road after being hit and killed by a passing car. Just recently fledged from the nest, this young bird’s life was cut short by a vehicle, a fate that unfortunately awaits millions of animals in the British countryside each year. KESS-funded research at Project Splatter in Cardiff University aims to find the true impact of roads on our wildlife, and to begin to raise awareness of the danger that roads pose to animals, as well as taking steps to reduce such unfortunate and unnecessary losses of life.

Emma SamuelA fridge too far?

Ar hyn o bryd mae fy oergell yn edrych fel hyn. Mae traean ohono’n cael ei neilltuo i swabiau trisffosffad adenosine y byddaf yn eu defnyddio fel ffordd gyflym o brofi glendid ym mhrosiect fy mhartner busnes. Er mwyn cadw uniondeb, rhaid storio swabiau ar dymheredd cyson rhwng 2 °C ac 8 °C cyn eu defnyddio. Er y gall effaith fy newisiadau bwyd fod yn annifyr, mae pob ymweliad â’r oergell yn fy atgoffa o fy nodau ymchwil. Mae’r pecynnau arian bach hynny yn gyswllt hollbwysig rhwng hylendid, ymddygiad y person sy’n trin bwyd a diwylliant diogelwch bwyd cysylltiedig. Pris bach i’w dalu am fwy o les yn y pen draw.

My fridge currently looks like this. A third given over to adenosine trisphosphate swabs that I will be using as a rapid testing method to indicate cleanliness at my project business partner. To preserve integrity, swabs must be stored at a constant temperature between 2°C and 8°C before use. While the impact on my food choices may be disagreeable, each fridge visit reminds me of my research goals. Those small silver packets are a crucial link between hygiene, food handler behaviour and associated food safety culture. A small price to pay for eventual greater good.

Alys DockseyMental health disorders in the workplace

Mental health disorders impact workplace productivity. One in four individuals suffer from mental disorders at some point during their lifetime. Seventy percent of individuals with mental disorders do not receive treatment. Mental health stigma is thought to be a principle cause underlying this. We wish to understand how this impacts work productivity. In order to do so, we created a new measure of mental health stigma in the workplace. We hope this will provide us with an understanding on how to improve mental health, reduce stigma, improve workplace productivity and reduce the cost of mental health in the workplace.

Nid yw saith deg y cant o’r rhai sydd ag anhwylder meddwl yn cael triniaeth. Credir bod stigma ynglŷn ag iechyd meddwl yn un o’r prif resymau wrth wraidd hyn. Rydym eisiau deall sut mae hyn yn effeithio ar gynhyrchiant yn y gwaith. I wneud hynny, rydym wedi creu dull newydd o fesur stigma iechyd meddwl yn y gweithle. Rydym yn gobeithio y bydd yn fodd i ni ddeall sut mae gwella iechyd meddwl, lleihau stigma, gwella cynhyrchiant yn y gweithle a lleihau cost iechyd meddwl yn y gweithle.

Justyna Nalepa-Grajcar Toxoplasmosis: A CATastrophe?

Scientists have discovered that people infected with toxoplasmosis are more go-getting. But that doesn’t mean we should all be trying to catch it!

Name: Toxoplasma gondii.

Location: All over the place.

Appearance: Very tiny. You’d need a microscope to see it.

Aw, how cute! Um, yeah. Kind of. Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that spreads in cat faeces to other mammals, including humans.

Less cute. What does it do? Worldwide, about two billion people have picked up toxoplasmosis, but in most cases they never feel anything at all and are immune afterwards.

Wowzer. What’s more, at an entrepreneurship event for professionals, infected people were 80% more likely to have started a business.

That sounds like my kind of disease!? Yes, although it can make babies and people with weakened immune systems very ill. You may also remember that Tommy in Trainspotting died from toxoplasmosis. Therefore, we are applying a new DNA sequencing method for Toxoplasma gondii that will assist in developing strategies for treatment.

Mae gwyddonwyr wedi darganfod bod pobl sydd wedi’u heintio â tocsoplasmosis â mwy o awch i lwyddo. Ond nid yw hynny’n golygu y dylai pawb ohonom geisio’i ddal!

Enw: Toxoplasma gondii.

Lleoliad: Ym mhobman

Ymddangosiad: Bychan iawn. Bydd arnoch angen microsgop i’w weld.

O, peth bach del! Mm, ie. Efallai. Parasit yw toxoplasma gondii sy’n lledaenu ym maw cathod i famaliaid eraill, yn cynnwys pobl.

Llai del. Beth mae’n ei wneud? Ledled y byd, mae tua dau biliwn o bobl wedi codi tocsoplasmosis, ond yn y rhan fwyaf o achosion nid ydynt yn teimlo unrhyw beth o gwbl ac maen nhw’n imiwn wedyn.

Waw. Ar ben hynny, mewn digwyddiad entrepreneuriaeth i bobl broffesiynol, roedd y rhai a oedd wedi’u heintio 80% yn fwy tebygol o fod wedi cychwyn busnes.

Mae hynny’n swnio fel fy math i o glefyd!? Ydy, ond mae’n gallu gwneud babis a phobl â systemau imiwnedd gwan yn sâl iawn. Efallai y byddwch chi’n cofio i Tommy yn Trainspotting farw o tocsoplasmosis. Felly, rydym yn cymhwyso dull dilyniannu DNA newydd ar gyfer Toxoplasma gondii a fydd yn help i ddatblygu strategaethau trin.

Robin Andrews Healthandher

Mae’r menopos yn gallu cwmpasu amrywiaeth enfawr o symptomau corfforol a meddyliol, yn cynnwys pyliau o wres, chwysu yn y nos, hwyliau isel a phryder. Mae’r menopos yn effeithio ar gyfran enfawr o boblogaeth y byd, ond mae’r dystiolaeth yn awgrymu mai prin yw’r menywod sy’n teimlo y gallan nhw gael yr help y mae ei angen arnynt. Mae’r rhwystrau rhag ceisio help wedi cael eu priodoli i bryderon ynglŷn â diogelwch meddyginiaethau pwrpasol ar gyfer y menopos a chyfathrebu gwael rhwng cleifion a meddygon. Mae system gwirio symptomau ar-lein Health & Her yn rhoi cyngor yn y fan a’r lle i fenywod a allai helpu i wella symptomau, ac arwain at fwy o geisio help meddygol a gwella’r cyfathrebu rhwng cleifion a meddygon. Hefyd, gallai’r data a allosodir o’r system hon wella’r wybodaeth sydd gennym am y menopos ar hyn o bryd a’r ffordd yr ydym yn ei drin. Gallwch weld y gwiriwr symptomau yma www.healthandher.com

The menopause can encompass a vast array of physical and mental symptoms, including hot-flushes, night-sweats, low mood and anxiety. A huge portion of the world’s population is affected by menopause, yet evidence suggests that few women feel able to access the help that they need. Barriers to help-seeking have been attributed to concerns over the safety of menopause-specific medication and poor patient-doctor communication. Health & Her’s online symptom-checker provides women with expert advice which could help improve symptoms and lead to greater adherence to medical help-seeking and improved patient-doctor communication. Additionally, the aggregated anonymised data extrapolated from this tool could improve our current knowledge and treatment of menopause. Visit the symptom-checker here at www.healthandher.com

Nicola Simkiss‘Together we can break mental health stigma’

Mae’r stigma’n ymwneud ag iechyd meddwl yn codi’n aml o ddiffyg gwybodaeth a chamddealltwriaeth ynglŷn ag anhwylderau iechyd meddwl. Mae gwybodaeth dda am iechyd meddwl yn galluogi plant i ddatblygu cadernid a’r gallu i ymdopi â beth bynnag y bydd bywyd yn ei daflu atynt, fel eu bod yn tyfu’n oedolion hapus, iach. Mae’r ddelwedd hon yn dangos yr effaith gadarnhaol y gall llythrennedd iechyd meddwl ei chael ar blant gan ei bod yn rhoi gwybodaeth nid yn unig am sut y gallan nhw helpu eu hunain ond hefyd sut y gallant helpu a chefnogi iechyd meddwl pobl eraill o’u cwmpas. Gyda’n gilydd, drwy addysg, gallwn siarad yn agored am iechyd meddwl a chwalu’r stigma’n ymwneud ag iechyd meddwl ar draws Cymru.

Mental health stigma often arises from a lack of knowledge and misunderstanding of mental health disorders. Good mental health knowledge enables children to develop resilience and ability to cope with whatever life throws at them so that they can grow into happy, healthy adults. This image captures the positive impact mental health literacy can have on children as it provides knowledge not only on how they can help themselves but also on how to help and support the mental health of others around them. Together, through education we can talk openly about mental health and break the stigmas that surround mental health across Wales.

Sudesna ShresthaNo more pain – Microneedles to the rescue

“Coelia fi, bydd yn teimlo fel PIGIAD PIN.”

Sawl gwaith ydych chi wedi clywed hyn cyn cael pigiad? A sawl gwaith oedd y pigiad yn boenus. Mwy poenus na chael eich pigo â phin.

DYCHMYGWCH weld nodwydd hypodermig 5 cm yn torri drwy’ch croen yn agos at eich llygaid, yn taro terfyn nerf a llestri gwaed; 0.3 cm oddi wrth eich llygaid.

Nawr dychmygwch glwt micronodwyddau ar ffurf tebyg i fandais, gyda rhyw 100 o ficronodwyddau polymer meddal: 0.025 cm mewn diamedr a 0.04 cm o uchder, yn llithro drwy haen allanol eich croen yn ysgafn ac yn rhyddhau’r cynnwys sy’n tryledu i’ch llestri gwaed, heb daro unrhyw derfyn nerf na llestr gwaed. Nawr dwedwch wrthyf, pa un fyddai’n well gennych chi?

Drwy fy ngwaith ymchwil rydw i’n datblygu micronodwyddau i ddisodli nodwyddau arferol a chreu proses trosglwyddo cyffuriau nad yw’n fewnwthiol. Felly, yn y dyfodol, ni fydd angen bod ag ofn cael pigiad.

“Trust me, it will feel like a PINPRICK.”

How many times have u heard that before receiving an injection? and how many times has it been painful. More painful than a pinprick.

IMAGINE, seeing a 5 cm hypodermic needle piercing through your skin around your eyes, hitting your nerve ending and blood vessels; 0.3 cm from your eyesight.

Now imagine a microneedle patch in a similar form to a bandage, with approximately 100 soft polymer microneedles: 0.025 cm diameter and 0.04 cm high, gliding through the outer layer of your skin with just a gentle swipe and depositing the components which diffuses to your blood vessels, without hitting any nerve ending or blood vessels. Now tell me, which one will you prefer more?

With my research I am developing microneedles to replace the norm and create a non-invasive drug delivery process. So, in the future you will not have to fear getting injected.

John BarkerImpact in the Valleys

Un o elfennau cyffrous gweithio gyda micro-BBaCh trafferthus yw mynd â’n cynnyrch, ein meddylfryd a’n gwerthoedd allan i’r gymuned yng Nghymru. Mae’r ddelwedd hon yn crynhoi’r holl lawenydd a brwdfrydedd o weithio gyda dysgwyr ifanc o’r Cymoedd, yr ydw i’n eu helpu i feithrin sgiliau entrepreneuriaeth. Mae hefyd yn dangos yr effaith gadarnhaol y mae’r ysgoloriaeth KESS2 hon wedi’i chael ar fy natblygiad personol i gan gynyddu fy hyder o flaen cynulleidfaoedd mawr, ochr yn ochr â bod o fudd i’r gymuned.

One of the exciting elements of working with a disruptive micro-SME is taking our product, thinking and values into the community in Wales. This image perfectly sums up the joy and enthusiasm of working with young learners from the Valleys who I am helping build entrepreneurial skills. It also illustrates the positive impact that this KESS2 scholarship has had on my personal development enhancing my confidence in front of large audiences, alongside the benefitting the community.
