INTRODUCTION

BIOSURF is an EU-funded project under the Horizon 2020 programme for research, technological

development and demonstration.

The objective of BIOSURF (BIOmethane as SUstainable and Renewable Fuel) is to increase the

production and use of biomethane (from

animal waste, other waste materials and

sustainable biomass), for grid injection

and as transport fuel, by removing non-

technical barriers and by paving the way

towards a European biomethane market.

The BIOSURF consortium consists of 11

partners from 7 countries (Austria,

Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary,

Italy and United Kingdom), covering a

large geographical area, as indicated in

the figure on the left.

The intention of the project is:

To analyse the value chain from

production to use, based on territorial,

physical and economic features

(specified for different areas, i.e., biofuel for transport, electricity generation, heating &

cooling);

To analyse, compare and promote biomethane registering, labelling, certification and trade

practices in Europe, in order to favour cooperation among the different countries and cross

border markets on the basis of the partner countries involved;

To address traceability, environmental criteria and quality standards to reduce GHG

emissions and indirect land-use change (ILUC), as well as to preserve biodiversity and to

assess the energy and CO2 balance;

To identify the most prominent drivers for CO2-emissions along the value chain as an input

for future optimization approaches and to exchange information and best practices all

across Europe with regard to biomethane policy, regulations, support schemes and

technical standards.

INTRODUCTION

This Final Report on Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication includes a list of actions from the original Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication Report (D8.1) submitted in April 2015 and explains how those actions were completed. This includes the dissemination channels used and a description of all written, spoken and electronic interaction. In addition, the efficacy of these initiatives is analysed. Section 1 describes the following initiatives and assesses their completion and/or impact:

The project’s visual identity (logo, templates, press releases and other communication channels);

The project’s website;

Dissemination and communication tools (project leaflet, project postcard, roll-up, e-newsletters, social media, media relations, final booklet);

Aspects of European transferability, including workshops;

Events, including the final conference;

Conclusions/results of dissemination. Section 2 consists of the following tables:

General dissemination information and numbers;

Scientific articles and other publications mentioning BIOSURF;

Events, workshops and conferences where BIOSURF was presented, promoted or discussed.

1. DISSEMINATION, EXPLOITATION AND COMMUNICATION ACTIVITIES

AND TOOLS

This section assesses the completion and/or impact of the project’s dissemination activities,

communication tools and methods vis-à-vis stakeholders, other groups that fall within the

biomethane supply chain or who have an interest in encouraging biomethane production, and the

wider public.

1.1 Visual Identity

A visual identity manual, including guidelines regarding logo elements, the project’s colours, the

structure of design products, templates and fonts to use, was submitted in April 2015 as an annex

to D8.1 and subsequently distributed to BIOSURF’s partners. It has been available since then on

the project’s Dropbox. The nine templates designed, along with the logo, were used consistently

and correctly throughout the project.

1.2 Project Website

The BIOSURF website (www.biosurf.eu) went online in April 2015. The site, which is updated on a

regular basis with news, deliverables, results and events, featuresa general descriptionof the

project, a section with links and contact information for the partners, a section with all public project

deliverables, a section for news and events, a section with links to other biogas projects, a section

featuring the various country networks, with separate subsections for each country, and a section

containing detailed information on European and national regulatory frameworks. Most of the top-

level pages (Home, About Us, Partners, National Networks, Regulatory Frameworks) and relevant

subsections, such as those related to each country’s national network and legal framework, are

translated into four languages (German, French, Italian, and Hungarian). The project’s

deliverables, as well as information/results related to its workshops, are published in the

Downloads and Deliverables section. The downloads section also features links to BIOSURF-

related scientific publications. The regulatory frameworks section plus the downloads and

deliverables sections constitute the online repository for the project. It was organised in this way,

rather than as a single, separate repository, in order to make it easier for users to find materials on

specific topics. The site uses a responsive design enabling a seamless browsing experience from

various portable devices.

The website will be maintained for at least one yearafter the end of the project. Website traffic was monitored using Google Analytics. Following is an analysis of the site’s traffic over the past year.

There was a total of 12,600 page views over the past year, and most people who visited the site went to the home page and the downloads and deliverables section. Other popular pages were “About BIOSURF”, “Partners”, and “News”. Traffic peaked over the summer and in early fall. The peak in the summer may have been due to the July 2017 newsletter, while the fall traffic was likely the result of the Power-to-methane workshop in early September (please see section 1.10 on European Transferability for details).

1.3 Project Leaflet

A project leaflet (4 pages) was produced in English and in the other languages of the BIOSURF countries (German, Italian, Hungarian and French) in month 5, with 1,000 copies per language. The leaflet was used to generate interest about the project among the key target groups. At least 900 leaflets were distributed at BIOSURF events and workshops, as well as at third-party events. The leaflet is available for download in the Deliverables area of the website under “Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication”.

1.4 Project Postcard

A project postcard (900 copies per language) was designed and printed in English. It was originally planned to translate the postcard into the other four BIOSURF languages, but given that there was virtually no text, it made more sense to produce the postcard only in English, with the slogan, “Fuelling Biomethane”. The project postcard, which contains the logo, the web address and a short slogan, was distributed at BIOSURF and third-party events to approximately 700 people. The postcard is available for download in the Deliverables area of the website under “Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication”.

1.5 Roll-Up

One project roll-up was created to display at conferences, exhibitions, workshops and other events. The roll up was produced in English, French, German, Hungarian and Italian. It is estimated that around 815 people in total saw the roll-up over the course of the project. Broken down by event, around 300 people saw the roll-up at the EBA Conference in 2016, 70 and then 60 people saw it at the two workshops in 2017, 165 saw it at the Malmo workshop, 40 at the Netherlands workshop, 60 at the Final Conference, 70 at the biomethane workshop in 2015, and 50 at the workshop in Romania. The roll up is available for download in the Deliverables area of the website under “Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication”.

1.6 E-newsletters

Six online newsletters were prepared – one every six months - and disseminated regularly via email during the project. There was an international version of the newsletter produced in English as well as five local versions for the BIOSURF countries (in German for Germany, in German for Austria, in French for France, in Hungarian for Hungary, and in Italian for Italy). The newsletters contained recent news on biomethane markets and on the project. The international version of the newsletter included the articles on the project itself and all English versions of the local news. The local versions of the newsletter offered information on dedicated

project topics as well as on topics from respective project countries, in accordance with their own needs and requirements. The local newsletters also included links (in English) to the news items from the other project countries. All newsletters are available for download in the Deliverables area of the website under “Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication”. Following are the results of the first six newsletters, according to MailChimp.

Newsletter 1: June 2015

The first newsletter, released in June 2015, had much higher open and click rates than the industry

average, and was opened most frequently in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

Newsletter 6 was released in December 2017 and had somewhat lower click and open rates,

perhaps because of the winter holiday. It was opened the most in Germany and the Netherlands,

followed by Italy.

1.7 Social Media and Other Web Resources

Social media was planned but was not heavily used during the project. A LinkedIn group was created but engagement was very low. It was decided not to use Facebook as this is a channel better suited to very general topics that appeal to a mass audience. While a dedicated Twitter account was not created, EBA’s live-tweeting during BIOSURF events achieved a very high level of engagement, as can be seen in the Twitter analytics (TweetReach) below.

another article of EnergiasRenovables. The final conference was also featured in Bioenergy Insight. In addition, all project partners presented their work to their respective target groups and key actors at the European and national level, in order to enhance networking and communication with them. For details, please see the tables on third-party events in section 2.

1.9 Final Booklet

A final booklet has been produced in order to provide a summary of BIOSURF’s main achievements and recommendations, and to increase the involvement of multipliers and businesses. This booklet was produced in English, and was translated into the other languages of the BIOSURF countries (German, Italian, Hungarian and French). It is available for downloadin the Deliverables area of the website under “Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication”.

1.10 European Transferability

While the project partners were responsible for dissemination and communication within their

respective networks via conferences, seminars, and other events as part of Task 2.2, the

European Transferability aspect of WP8 ensured that BIOSURF was promoted during the course

of the project at a number of European conferences in order to reach a broader international

public. The project partners identified the most suitable conferences dealing with the production

and use of biomethane.

Beyond the consortium partners and networking activities in their home countries (WP2),

BIOSURF addressed several other stakeholders outside the project that showed a strong interest

in biomethane. One way the proper use and transferability of BIOSURF’s results was guaranteed

was through the organisation of three workshops in non-partner countries (in Sweden, Romania,

Czech Republic, Belgium and The Netherlands).

Sweden

A BIOSURF workshop for the promotion of biomethane in Sweden, which was held in Malmo on 12

May 2016, gathered 165 delegates from 24 countries. The main topics regarded the latest

developments on the biogas sector, anaerobic digestion and gasification.

These workshops, through the involvement of the main local stakeholders (around 20 participants,

including selected project partners), allowed for the consolidation and exchange of the concepts

and outputs developed by the project (e.g. registries, guarantees of origin, tradable certificates,

sustainability, GHG emissions reduction, etc.).

1.11 Final Conference

A full-day project conference was organised in conjunction with the Bin2Grid project on 24

November 2017 in Brussels, to present the projects’ main achievements, methods and best

practices.Topics of discussion included: cooperation among the national biomethane registries;a

European mass-balancing system for biomethane; the free market biomethane trade; sustainable

raw material supply;the methodology for entitlement to CO2 certificates; regional specificities;

transferability of results beyond project countries; biomethane as a transport fuel;and the

sustainable management of food and beverage waste. This open conference was attended by 60

people. Target groups and stakeholders were represented by 50 people.

Stefano Proietti from ISINNOVA, the coordinator of the BIOSURF project, and Attila Kovacs from

the European Biogas Association (EBA), presented the actions taken to kick-start a cross-border

biomethane trade within European countries. Lorenzo Maggioni from Consorzio Italiano Biogas

(CIB) showcased the creation of a European biomethane market (albeit still in its embryonic

phase). He demonstrated this using the example of the Italian, Austrian and French partners of

BIOSURF, who signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at defining conditions and rules for

the exchange of biomethane Guarantees of Origin.The conference was closed with a series of

policy recommendations by Jan Stambasky, President of EBA, followed by a panel discussion of

experts.

Through its newsletter, the BIOSURF project reached out to a large audience, focusing on 6

countries: the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Italy. The international edition was read

in most EU countries, thanks to the EBA’s contacts. For each of the six editions, more than 500

recipients read the newsletter.

Media relationsestablished with European bioenergy newspapers, and the press releases sent to

these outlets, allowed for the publication of articles on their websites and increased visibility of the

BIOSURF project.

The BIOSURF workshops held in different EU countries allowed European audiences to discover

more about BIOSURF and the development of biomethane in Europe. The majority of participants

expressed their satisfaction regarding the topics covered during these workshops and the quality of

the presentations and discussions.

The final conference was attended by more than 60 participants, who were very interested in the

results from both projects. The panel of external experts from the biogas and biomethane sectors

and the audience agreed on the great potential of biomethane for the decarbonisation of Europe.
