Kita telah pun masuk ke tahun 2014 setahun berlalu dengan bagitu pantas sekali. Dalam masa empat bulan setelah keluarnya Berita Masra pada bulan Sept. 2013 kita telah melalui beberapa peristiwa. Deepavali telah dirayakan pada 2 November 2013 dan saya ingin mengucapkan ucapan selamat Deepavali yang terlewat kepada semua yang beragama Hindu. Juga tidak terlupa kepada yang beragama Kristian selamat meyambut Hari Natal pada 25 Disember 2013 yang lalu. Selamat tahun baru 2014 saya ucapkan kepada semua ahli Masra and AJK jauh dan dekat dan berharap semua berada dalam keadaan sihat walafiat.

Kita telah membuat perjumpaan hari keluarga baru baru ini di Ulu Langat di suatu dusun berchalet bernama Singgah Santai Resort. Venue telah ditukar

sebab kita tidak dapat mengadakannya di Kuching oleh kerana penerbangan yang penuh. Seramai 24 orang ahli kita telah hadhir dan pada malam

31Disember 2013 kita telah mengadakan BBQ. Pada sebelah pagi kita telah mengadakan sukanika aerobik dikelolai oleh Puan Kesuma dan pulang pada pukul

12.00 tengah hari. Selamat tahun baru kepada ahli Kaum Cina yang akan menyambut Gong Xi Fa Cai pada 31 Jan 2014. Untuk perhatian ahli bahawa kita akan mengadakan Mesyuarat Agung pada bulan Jun tahun 2014. Kita akan memilih ahli jawatankuasa yang baru untuk 2 tahun yang akan datang. Saya ingin menyeru kepada semua ahli supaya datang pada hari tersebut. Saya sudahi warkah ini dengan salam sejahtera dan berjumpa pada mesyuarat agong.

Untuk perhatian ahli semua, MASRA akan menyiarkan BERITA MASRA di halaman websitenya “pesaramas.org” bermula pada bulan Jan. 2014. Siapa yang ada Internet silakan baca.

From the President’s DeskWe are entering year 2014 and one year has passed so quickly. Four months after we had produced the Berita Masra in Sept. 2013 several events had taken place. Deepavali was celebrated on 2nd November 2013 and I would like to wish the Hindus who celebrated Deepavali a belated Happy Deepavali. Not to forget the Christians who celebrated Christmas on 25th December 2013 I would also like to wish them Merry Christmas. To all members of Masra and AJK wherever you are may I wish you all Happy New Year 2014 and hope you are all in good health always.We had a family day gathering recently at Ulu Langat at a fruit garden plantation called Singgah Santai Resort. The original venue Kuching was changed in view of the booking situations which were full. About 24 members were present on the night of 31st December 2013. We had BBQ at night on 31st December 2013. In the morning on New Year’s Day we had aerobic exercises under our able insructress Kesuma for those who had come for the family day. All checked out at twelve o’clock in the afternoon.Happy new year to all Chinese members who will celebrate their Gong Xi Fa Cai on 31st Jan 2014. For information to all members we are going to have the annual general meeting in June 2014. We will choose new committee members for the next two years. I wish to remind all members to come for the AGM. I wish to end this note with salam sejahtera and we will meet again on the day of the Annual General Meeting.

PERJUMPAAN DI PULAU PINANG

Satu perjumpaan dengan ahli kita telah diadakan di Pulau Pinang pada 8hb. September 2013. Seramai 14 orang ahli kita dari Kuala Lumpur telah pergi ke sana dengan 5 kenderaan mereka sendiri dan menginap di Bayview hotel selama 2 malam.Mereka kembali selepas 2 malam di hotel tersebut Sebelum itu mereka telah mengadakan Jamuan Makan Malam pada malam 9hb September dan ramai juga ahli kita dari Pulau Pinang hadhir pada majlis tersebut. Mereka telah mengadakan 8 course Chinese dinner. Wakil kita di Pulau Pinang yang juga Ahli Jawatan Kuasa Tuan Haji Munawar Basha Khan dan Encik Fauzi telah mengetuai perjumpaan kita pada malam itu. Beliau telah mengucapkan berbanyak terima kaseh kapada ahli kita dari Kuala Lumpur kerana telah datang jauh untuk bertemu dengan mereka. Rombongan dari Kuala Lumpur telah diketuai oleh Capt Abdul Razak Hashim. Mereka telah kembali ke Kuala Lumpur dengan selamat.

Hari Khamis 5 Dec 2013 di BangiGolf Resort

Masra telah mengaturkan satu perjumpaan golf ditempat tersebut pada 5hb Dec 2013. Seramai 24 orang telah mengambil bahagian dan ramai diantara mereka adalah ahli Masra. Diantara VIP yang datang adalah Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, Dato’ Khalid Ismail, General(B) Dato’ Adnan dan beberapa orang dari luar Masra seperti Saudara Baharuddin Ngah. Capt Abdul Razak iaitu Masra Golf Captain hadhir sama untuk bermain pada hari tersebut.

Salepas sarapan pagi yang bermula pada pukul tujuh pagi, tee-off di tetapkan pada pukul lapan pagi. Kesemua ada enam flight yang berlepas dan mereka kembali ke pangkalan pada lebeh kurang pukul 12 tengah hari. Makan tengah hari telah disediakan dan peserta biasanya pergi mandi dahulu dan melekatkan pakaian bersih sebelum mereka ke meja makan.Seramai 5 orang dari (first nine) telah dihadiahkan ball sweep diikuti 5 orang lagi pada group (second nine). Stellenbosch, South Africa? Where is it? Most of us might know Cape Town, Johannesburg (where these two cities were once on MH routes but since have been withdrawn). Stellenbosch is situated in the winelands region of the Western Cape Town. It is the second oldest and the most scenicaly attractive and historically preserved town in South Africa, nestles snugly in a valley surrounded by rolling hills of vineyards and majestic mountains. The historical buildings of the town are reflected in the neo-Dutch, Georgian and modern- Victorian architecture.This year World Airline Road Race 2013 - the 32nd edition - was held at Stellenbosch from 11th - 13th October 2013. This WARR 2013 was hosted by South African Airways in association with the Cape Winelands District. PINGAT JASA KEBAKTIAN UNTUK RETIREE SEVAPERUMAN

Retiree Sevaperuman Nallathamby was recently awarded the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK) by the Selangor State Government by the Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, at an investiture ceremony on 21 August 2013 at the Dewan Jubli Perak Negeri Selangor.The citation reads as follows:Pingat ini dikurniakan kepada Encik Sevaperuman Nallathamby kerana mengenangkan jasa bakti kepada kerajaan Selangor.Sevaperuman commenced duty with Malaysia Airlines on 8th February 1974. He was an active member of Malaysian Red Cresent Society and carried out various duties as and when required throughout the nation. He was also a regular blood donor.Seva was awarded a Special Achievement Award for Community Services in 1989 (from Malaysia Airlines Management. He retired from MAS in 2005.

and Mr. Selvarajah. From Stellenbosch, all the participants were transferred by buses 10 km further inland, amidst vineyards and farms. It was really cold in the morning of the race - about 14 deg.C° with all of us shivering. But after the race started and running 1 to 2 km. We felt warmed up and thoroughly enjoyed the run. All of us completed the race in the various age groups for the 5 km and 10km events. Our MAS Road runners completed the race in very good time and won some prices in their different age categories. Congratulations to all the 21 runners from the MAS Road Runners Club and the 2 runners from Masra for completing the run in good time and receiving their medals and prices.

beliau yang telah besar seramai 3 orang, seorang lelaki dan dua orang perempuan. Beliau telah ada 3 orang cucu.Beliau telah jatuh sakit pada awal tahun 2012. Beliau hilang ingatan dan mula lupa pada kawan. Dua kali beliau telah keluar rumah dan sesat dan akhir sekali beliau telah keluar rumah pada 25 Jun 2012 dan dijumpai oleh Polis 3 hari kemudian dan dihantar ke HKL di ward psychiatric. Di atas usaha anak saudara yang duduk di Kampung Bharu beliau telah mencari di rumah sakit HKL dan telah bertemu dengan emak saudara beliau pada 30 Jun 2012. Selepas itu di atas jagaan suami yang disayangi beliau tidak lagi keluar rumah. Hj Baharum telah menjaga Salmah sepanjang masa makan minum dan keselesaan Salmah sehingga beliau terpaksa tinggal di rumah dan tak boleh berpisah dengan beliau. Pihak MASRA mendapat tahu berkenaan keadaan Salmah dan berasa simpati. Dengan sebulat suara AJK telah bersetuju untuk membantu beliau dengan menghadiahkan keluarga tersebut sebanyak seribu ringgit dan pergi ke rumah beliau untuk melawat dan menghantar wang tersebut pada 16 Okt. 2013 yang lalu. Semoga Allah mencucuri rahmat kepada keluarga tersebut dan meringankan hidup mereka senantiasa.

Puan Salmah binti Bustamin adalah seorang ahli Masra yang telah bersara pada 9 Jun 2001. Beliau bersara dari Jabatan Penempahan iaitu bahagian Ticketing dan bersara sebagai Ticketing Administrator. Bermula sebagai Kerani Penempahan semasa beliau mula mula masuk MAS dan di atas kerajinan beliau telah naik satu ke satu pangkat dan akhirnya beliau mencapai pangkat Ticketing Administrator sebelum beliau bersara.Semasa bekerja di Jabatan Reservation beliau di sukai oleh kawan kawan beliau kerana perwatakan beliau yang lemah lembut dan suka membantu kawan dalam apa jua hal sekali pun. Boleh diertikan bahawa beliau tidak akan ada musuh di luar atau di pejabat. Sewaktu beliau bekerja dahulu beliau ada lah sehat belaka dan jarang kita nampak beliau jatuh sakit. Beliau telah berkahwin dengan sahabat beliau di pejabat yang sama bernama Encik Bahrum bin Dahlin. Salmah seorang yang bijak dan selain pandai berbahasa Inggeris, beliau juga faseh berbahasa Hokkien dan Thai. Ini membuat kawan-kawan beliau segan dengan beliau.Selepas bersara dari MAS Salmah tidak membuat sebarang kerja untuk menyambung karier beliau dan tinggal di rumah sebagai surirumah sepanjang masa. Beliau telah duduk di rumah untuk menjaga anak

The most difficult problem that we face after retirement is the psychological one.When an executive retires, he is at the peak of his career - his status, prestige, and financial status. The moment he lays down his job, all these perks desert him. He discovers that “Everything becomes Less and Less”. The first thing he notices is the way his status and prestige are affected. Even at home, the retired person is no longer the important person. If he demands of his wife an early breakfast, she will promptly admonished him, “You are retired now. So take it easy. Let those employed go first !” he is no longer “Numero Uno”. A friend of mine who was a senior Executive in RBI was getting 500 greeting cards and diaries/calenders for the New Year. After one year of retirement it dwindled fo fifty and this year he got ten. Greeting cards, calenders and diaries are surely an indicator of the respect you received when you were employed.The most immediate problem on retirement is time management.We all have twenty four hours at our disposal, whether we like it or not. When you are a senior executive you work for ten twelve or even fifteen hours and you feel “Suppose I had two hours more how nice it would be! I could do more to finish my work and life would be easier on the next working day.”After retirement, we have twenty four hours and nothing to do! Result – misery and this is one thing one like to spread! No man wants to be miserable alone. He will make as many people miserable as he can. A man who has nothing to do will harass people around him. Turning on head the Benthamite principle of maximization of welfare - maximization of ‘ill-fare’!

There are two solutions to this problem.

One is to continue to do the same work one was doing at the time of retirement.

The option is very convenient but where is such an opportunity for the majority? There is the temptation to wangle out an extension but this does lead to compromising principles which many succumb to regrettably. I have seen Senior Officers accepting jobs as liaison officers and standing outside the office cubicle of their subordinates and seek favours from them. But how long-lasting is this solution? Extension

merely postpones the problem. It crops up again quite swiftly.

The second option is to do something different, i.e. option to get another job.

An executive can get another job provided he is willing to sacrifice self-respect. Generally jobs are given by the previous employer’s suppliers or may be found in other organizations. In commercial organizations, officers are employed to get orders and collect bills speedily from their previous employers. So you will agree that this is no solution.

All of you are aware that the book Bard of Avon- William Shakespeare wrote of the seven “ Seven Stages of Man”. Modern psychologists have abridged it to four and these are thus.

After this lighter side I revert to post-retired life. The retired official is likely to fall into four dysfunctional time options.

The first is “Withdrawal”Many retired people, the day they retire from their job, withdrawal from life and within a few months they just pass away. When you ask a doctor he will tell you I can give a medical term but this is a case of “simple lack of will to live”.

The second time management option is “ritual”A person can create a ritual for himself. He gets up at a specific time, does diferent activities at a specific time and this invariably results in misery for others if that specific time frame is not adhered to. While in essence he has nothing to do, he is trying to make his activities meaningful. This leads to a meaningless ritual.

The third option is PastimeMany people get together and embark on a combined ritual which is called pastime. This too does not add to the meaningfulness of life.

The last option turns out to be even mischievous.It is playing games - not physical ones like badminton, tennis but psychological ones where you try to manipulate people, get into their problems, complicate them and generally enlarge the tension around you. Many a respectable person indulges in this and creates problems where none existed.

JOKESOne day a doctor met his patient at a restaurant who was eating a plate of rice and it happened the patient was having a small portion of rice on his plate. Smiling and nodding his head of approval he proceeded to another table where his doctor friend was waiting for him. Trying to boast he told his counterpart that his patient has regimentally followed his instruction by eating a small portion of rice. His doctor friend remarked “Phooh, that was his fifth helping”. The doctor almost swooned to his chair.

Sebuah negara yang hampir melibatkan diri dengan peperangan telah mengistiharkan kepada rakyat beliau iaitu sekiranya ada rakyat beliau yang berani menyeberangi sebuah sungai yang penuh dengan reptilia buaya ganas akan dikahwinkan dengan anak perempuan beliau dan dilantik sebagai panglima perang. Raja telah berfikir sekiranya ia boleh selamat menyeberangi sungai tentu dia akan menjadi pahlawan yang hebat. Kita telah mengadakan satu perjumpaan keluarga pada 31 Disember 2013 yang telah di rancang beberapa lama dahulu. Perjumpaan ini sepatutnya diadakan di Kuching Sarawak tetapi oleh kerana keadaan penerbangan MAS amat penuh maka perjumpaan ini telah diadakan di resort tersebut. Pada malam 31 Disember tersebut ada seramai 24 orang ahli dan family mereka hadhir untuk mengadakan BBQ. Presiden berada bersama Puan Noraini dan famili serta AJK Hj. Azlan Hussain dan isteri. Treasurer dan Editor menyusul pada malam tersebut untuk menghadiri BBQ tersebut. Tiada aktiviti yang menarik pada malam tersebut seperti Karaoke tetapi malam itu telah dimeriahkan oleh Hj. Azlan yang menyoal perserta dengan soalan soalan peribadi yang mencuit hati dan penuh gelak ketawa. Perserta BBQ pada malam tersebut telah bersurai lebih awal untuk mendapat tidur yang cukup kerana akan bangun awal pagi untuk berjalan pagi dan bersenam. Morning walk bermula pada pukul tujuh pagi dan cuaca pada pagi sememang sejuk. Selepas berjalan beberapa jauh badan mula berasa panas dan diikuti dengan bersenam dengan cara ‘free hand’ menjadikan peserta berpeluh. Ini cukup bagi mereka pada pagi itu badan berasa sehat dan terus ke bilik masing-masing untuk membersihkan badan dan memakai pakaian yang bersih sebelum mereka mengadakan sarapan pagi. Selepas sarapan mereka beredar ke bilik masing-masing untuk berehat seketika dan bersedia untuk chekout. Semua peserta beredar pada pukul 12.00 tengah hari dengan menyambut selamat tahun baru 2014 dalam perjalanan mereka pulang ke rumah masing masing.
