He took my hand and when we wanted to leave,I said, “Messenger of Allah, you said, 'I will teach

The Makkan phase can be divided into threestages: (total of 13 years)

The stage of the secret Call: 3 years.

The stage of the proclamation of the Call inMakkah: from the beginning of the fourth year ofProphethood to almost the end of the tenth year.

The stage of the call to Islam and propagating itbeyond Makkah: it lasted from the end of tenthyear of the Prophethood until His emigration toMadinah.

The initial verse of this surah is concerned withthe miraculous night journey of God’s Messengerfrom the Sacred Mosque in Makkah to the Masjid

al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.

The Messenger was taken from there throughthe dimensions of existence, reaching as high asthe Presence of God.

This second part of the journey is called theAscension (Mi‘raj).

The reason why the Qur’an mentions theBayt al-Maqdis in Jerusalem asMasjid al-Aqsa (The Farthest Mosque) is at leastpartially because at the time of the Revelation,it was the farthest (sacred) mosque for theMuslims in Madinah.

The word “farthest” also signifiesgreatness in degree.

This surah was revealed in Makkah at a timewhen the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah had notyet been built and the Ka‘bah was full of idols;therefore, the Muslims turned to that Masjid in

In the eleventh year of Prophethood six mencame from Madinah for Hajj and met Rasulullah .They embraced Islam and the following year

twelve pilgrims came to Makkah and embracedIslam and pledged:

'We will not worship anyone but Allah, we will notsteal, not commit adultery, nor kill our children.

We will obey Rasulullah in all that is good'.This was known as the first covenant of Aqabah.

With the promise of safety in Madinah, thebelievers migrated there alone or in groups withthe permission of Rasulullah .

Rasulullah chose twelve Muslims of Madinah forthe propagation of Islam. Nine of them werefrom the tribes of Khazraj. After the pledge hadbeen taken, Rasulullah decided to migrate toMadinah.

The muslims began to leave Makkah and go toMadinah. There were only a few Muslims left in

Makkah and Rasulullah waited for Allah'scommad to leave for Madinah.
