How much can be stored on a 32GB SD card?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Amount of storage depends on the avarage bitrate of the video. The bitrate depends on stream settings and scenario. The example in slide is based on continious recording H.264, 30 fps, medium compression office environment. If event-driven recording is used (and/or lower frame rate), the retention time will of course increase.

If event-driven recording is used (and/or lower frame rate), the retention time will of course increase. Most software applications see people retrieving data about 50% of the time and storing data 50% of the time NVR storage typically records 100% of the time, with only 1% playback Standard spec servers max out at relatively low camera count with high quality (HD) full framerate recording (processor hungry)

What is the expected lifetime of a 32 GB card?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The SD card may only be rewritten a fixed number of times. How many times may vary from 1000-5000 times. The lifetime depends on how often the whole card is rewritten. The example in slide is based on continious recording H.264, 30 fps, medium compression and apprx 2000 total rewrites. Note: This is no guarantee as quality on the card may vary.

> Edge storage, controlled by the camera/encoder can not only work standalone but also complement VMS solutions

> Recording redundancy

> HQ video in low bandwidth environment

> Remote site storage

Overcome challenges

VMS

Central storage

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Edge Storage is all about enabling the camera to record video to a storage device. Edge Storage recordings are controlled and owned by the cameras. The camera has its own recording database. The VMS can list and stream recordings from the camera and does not access the video files directly. Edge Storage is a complement to VMS recording , not a replacement. Edge Storage enables various cost-efficient recording solutions such as Possibile solutions where Edge Storage may reduce cost and add value Recording Redundancy Possibility to get High Quality video clips in low bandwidth envirnoment Low cost remote site recording (a.k.a. 2-tier storage) All four solutions may be solved by adding additional NVR or VMS Servers, but… Local Storage is the most cost efficient way to implement customer request and requirements Use standard off-the-shelf storage devices No PC, servers, NVR are required The listed areas can be solved using additional NVR, DVR or VMS. Note: Edge Storage may not be suitable for every type installation and recording solution…

Presenter
Presentation Notes
As long as the camera has power, other system components such as switches, routers, servers may fail. The VMS can easily retrieve missing video from the camera and merge these clips back into the system.

High-quality video in low bandwidth environments

Low bandwidth/Quality

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In some environment the bandwidth may be limited for continuous HQ video streaming. One example being City Surveillance. These solutions may monitor and record a low bandwidth video (low fps, low resolution or high compression). The cameras will continuously recording HQ video with Edge Storage. This enables system to retrieve HQ video clips upon incidents.

> Transfer all or selected clips to central VMS

Remote site storage

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Edge Storage for remote sites may be used in various configurations and for different purposes. The camera is added to the VMS but configure to keep recordings on the Edge Storage. The VMS may retrieve all video or just clips to be merged into the VMS recording database.

> Every 18 months you get twice as many transistors/performance for the same amount of money

> Moore's law from 1965 is still valid!

Technology evolution

“No exponential is forever… but we can delay ‘forever’.”

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Moore’s law was described by Mr Gordon Moore who was co-founder of Intel. He described in 1965 and said that every 18 months the performance will double for the same amount of money in a integrated circuit. This gives an exponential increase of performance over time. The base for this evolution the size reduction of transistors used in the Integrated circuits. At time Mr Moore’s defined the law people said that this is maybe true for some time but nothing is Exponential forever. I agree that nothing is exponential forever but now 45 years has gone and it is still valid and it is not expected to stop in at least the coming 10 years.

> 14 years from 1996 to 2010

> Moore’s law means – 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2: >9 times

> Total = about 600 times

Let’s validate Moore’s Law

Yes, Moore’s Law is valid!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Martin: Let´s see, Network cameras is 14 years old. Divided with 1.5 gives 9.5 times Multiply 2 9.5 times gives 600times better preformance In 1996 we had 1fps in 0.1MP Today we have 30fps in 2MP That is 30 repektive 20 times Yes, Moore’s law works!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The first Network Camera only had 1% off Analog Camera’s capture capabilitywhen it was introduced 1996, it was it’s Network capability that was the driver. But as Network Cameras follows Moores law the evolution went fast and about 2002 it reached the same capability as the analog one and today it is much more. So what will happen next, do we need 600 times higher Image Capturing, 300 Mp and 120 fps ? Probably not even if we wantmuch more than today. The conclusion is that it will be, already are, a lot of performace to manage other things in the camera.

Animated version AXIS Camera Application Platform enables third-party development of applications that can be downloaded and installed on Axis network video products. The open application platform will be included in the firmware of the majority of Axis products during 2010. Axis will provide a compatibility tool, so that partners can market Axis-compatible applications using the Axis symbol for compatible applications. Integrators, resellers and end users can then download selected applications into their Axis cameras and encoders in order to meet specific end user needs.
