Agenda
Why is edge technology important?
25% market convergence
to IP
Modern powerful cameras

Edge Storage
> Edge storage – Allows cameras, encoders to record directly to
storage device such as an SD card – Sometimes referred to as local storage or on
board recording
> Other recording methods include – DVR – NAS – SAN
What do we mean by Edge Storage?
> ‘Not a security solution’
> Too expensive
> We don’t need it – there’s no driver and it doesn’t integrate
> It’s not a viable technology today – but it might be in a few years
Why hasn’t Edge Storage taken off before?
Not a security solution
> Why did we bother making screens HD and flat?
> PCs were never going to be commonplace
> Digital technology has made video surveillance more powerful – yet easier to use
> How easy was it to record to VHS?
> Even cameras are becoming sleek and modern
As technology evolves, so does video surveillance
Too expensive
“The 32GB SD card that costs 12x its weight in gold”
> SanDisk releases world's first 32GB micro SD card
> 11x15x1mm card consists of eight 4GB memory chips stacked vertically on top of one another
> Card weighs only 0.5g – Retail price of £145 ($230)
– Worth roughly 12 times its weight in gold**
Inhibitive price – even in 2010

SanDisk 2GB MiniSD Card $69 Mar-06 $34.5
SanDisk 2GB Ultra II Secure Digital Card $91 Sep-04 $40.5
Average per GB $52.2
Is the cost of Edge Storage still inhibitive?
No. cameras Storage capacity GB Cost of storage New cost of storage

There’s no driver and no integration
> Power consumption of micro SD cards varies by manufacturer – No moving parts – 11*15*1mm, <0.5g – Range of 66-330 mW (20-100 mA at a supply voltage of 3.3 V)
> Low-energy 4-port 160GB DVR – Moving disc – 40*200*140mm – 1.2kg – 40W external power supply (additional 10W per channel used)
Edge Storage – a green driver
Not a viable technology today
How much can be stored on a 32GB SD card?
How much can be stored on a 32GB SD card?
What is the expected lifetime of a 32 GB card?
> Use brand names
> Size should be at least 16GB preferably 32GB
> Use Class 4 or more. Class states read/write speed, not quality
Which cards should be used?
> Edge storage, controlled by the camera/encoder can not only work standalone but also complement VMS solutions
> Recording redundancy
> HQ video in low bandwidth environment
> Remote site storage
Overcome challenges
VMS
Central storage
> Safeguard uninterrupted recording for mission critical installations
– Retrieve “missing” video from camera
System redundancy for mission critical installations
GAP
Video
> Monitor low bandwidth/quality video
> Request high quality video clip upon incident
High-quality video in low bandwidth environments
Low bandwidth/Quality
> Low-cost remote site recording solution
> Transfer all or selected clips to central VMS
Remote site storage
> SDHC cards currently maxxed at 32GB
– SDXC cards on the horizon (2TB, 300MB/sec)
> Further integration with other video storage and management (VMS, NAS)
> Increased processor capability at the edge
What next for Edge Storage?
Edge Technology The future of analytics
> Every 18 months you get twice as many transistors/performance for the same amount of money
> Moore's law from 1965 is still valid!
Technology evolution
“No exponential is forever… but we can delay ‘forever’.”
> 1996: 1 fps in 0.1 Mpix
> 2010: 30 FPS in 2 Mpix
> This gives 600 times improvement
> 14 years from 1996 to 2010
> Moore’s law means – 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2: >9 times
> Total = about 600 times
Let’s validate Moore’s Law
Yes, Moore’s Law is valid!
Network camera performance evolution
Do we want 600 times higher resolution/framerates, 300 MP/120 fps ?

> Truly scalable – One analytics engine per camera
> Analytics close to where images are captured
> Ever increasing processing capacity
> Greener solution
> Lower TCO
Analytics at the edge
> Truly scalable – Each server can handle hundreds of
channels
– Utilize all the computational power in the installation
> Requires well defined interfaces between cameras and server
