The Experience Management (EM) Team of Dialogue in the Dark Hong Kong

(DiD HK) comprises a team of visually impaired individuals, who guide visitors

and students through a journey in the dark and edutainment activities, as well as

assist staff of corporations to complete their training tasks in the DiD Workshop.

As a business that appeals with an experience in darkness, and a social

enterprise with the visually impaired as part of its beneficiaries, the founder

placed heavy emphasis on the team responsible for the core products and

services, and not surprisingly, preparation for the EM Team commenced in the

initial stage of the establishment of the company.

In January 2009, eight of Hong Kong’s visually impaired persons received a

10-day intensive training and practice programme to become the city’s first

group of trainers of DiD Workshop. By the time the first group of tour

guides completed their training and DiD Experiential Exhibition tour opened

its doors in January 2010, the EM Team has recruited five full-time and 20

part-time members of staff. As of March 2012, 11 full-time and 23 part-time

members of staff were working under the EM Team, most of whom have

mastered at least two occupational skills such as trainers of DiD Workshop,

tour guides of the DiD Experiential Exhibition tour, or host at Dinner in the

Dark; while the eight full-time staff have taken up the tasks of team

management and daily administration on varied levels. Since the founding of

the EM Team, 43 visually impaired individuals have worked or are still

working at DiD, with five resigning for personal reasons, and three working

at companies of their wish via DiD HK.

As a self-subsistent social enterprise on a social mission, DiD’s

shareholders, managers and the EM Team have agreed to not use figures

alone as a benchmark for the mission’s effectiveness. Instead, we

endeavour to bring positive impact to the public, social enterprises and the

visually impaired community through all the minute details of our work.

As every one of DiD’s activities is operated on limited time, and participants

would want to interact with our trainers and tour guides in the most

comprehensive and in-depth ways possible, we have familiarised our

members of staff with the layout of the exhibition venue, journey route and

flow, as well as provided them with training on narration, drama

performance, vocal techniques, and handling participants’ opinions and

questions, in order to enhance the staff’s ability to express themselves and

impact the participants.

The company’s founder has been equally circumspect with team

management. By separating impaired vision from mental disability, the founder

has helped encourage the visually impaired staff to overcome difficulties and

help with the EM Team’s management tasks, such as handling recruitments,

daily administration, internal training programmes, quality assessment and

human resources management, while taking part in the company’s long-term

strategy, system design and product development.

In terms of the human resources of the EM Team, we insist on treating the

company and the visually impaired as equally important service target groups.

Our pre-occupational training for candidates, for instance, includes not only

the familiarisation of the exhibition venue and activity flow, but also the

cultivation of self-confidence, and discussion on occupational knowledge and

professional awareness. This way, we can help the visually impaired

individuals who do not match the mainstream employment standards to

achieve their goals, and assist them with their future life and career

development. For the visually impaired who do not match the mainstream

employment standards, we explore their strengths and help them understand

that failing to meet DiD’s work standards is by no means a negation of their

capabilities, so that unselected candidates would not think of it as a result of

inadequateness in themselves. That is precisely why many visually impaired

individuals, despite being unselected after pre-occupational training, admitted

to have learnt a great deal during the entire process, many of whom have

soon landed other job and learning opportunities after the training.

Thanks to the dedication of the visually impaired and abled at DiD, the EM

Team and the company’s members of staff have transcended the traditional

definition of mutually beneficial relationship in charity work. Through

actualisation, discussion, cooperation, and a relationship of critique and

collaboration, the team is bonded and driven by a common goal.

As we were establishing the team, we have also been sending our members

of staff to Shenzhen, Shanghai and Taipei since 2009 to train the visually

impaired in mainland China and Taiwan, and help them build their own EM

Teams.

Through their job at DiD, many visually impaired staff have been able to better

define their positions in their families and society, and they have seen

improvements in their mental and physical health. Unfortunately, most of the

visually impaired in Hong Kong have yet to utilise their full potentials due to the

insufficient quality and quantity of resources earmarked for rehabilitation, barrier-

free, higher education and lifelong learning for the visually impaired. It is

environmental constraints as such that increasingly impede our recruitment of

new staff members and the team’s development.

The lack of resources and channels for the visually impaired to learn and

practise foreign languages has resulted in the difficulties we encounter when

recruiting multi-lingual trainers and tour guides. Meanwhile, the obsolete barrier-

free environment and techniques have restrained the visually impaired staff’s

participation in administrative and managerial tasks. This challenge cannot be

overcome by just one social enterprise alone – it requires the long-term

cooperation of all related institutions in society.

Looking back, I was the only Chinese-speaking member of the DiD team

between 2007 and 2008. All I could do was to lug my suitcase on irregular

flights to participate in part-time jobs and short-term training programmes at DiD

in Germany. Without the creation of this platform by social enterprise instructor

Dr. KK Tse, social entrepreneur Mr. Patrick Cheung, shareholders including Mr.

Chong Chan-yau, supporters and the trailblazing staff, this closely knitted team

and an enriched work life wouldn’t have existed. I would like to thank you all for

your support, on behalf of the visually impaired staff of DiD HK’s EM Team.

Since joining Dialogue in Silence Hong Kong (DiS HK) in March 2010, I have

finally completed my training and become a Deaf trainer. I’m grateful to the

undaunted support and effort of all participating institutions.

The truth is, I was interested in working at DiS quite a while ago. It was with the

encouragement of my wife that I decided to join the company. I officially

became a member of staff at DiS in June 2010, something that I’m happy

about, and I’m grateful for the opportunities given to me by the workshop’s Deaf

trainer. I will continue to give my best and make the best of the DiS experience

with my fellow staff, Deaf trainers, sign language interpreters, and participants at

the workshop.

I have never tried this type of work before and the way it works at DiS is fairly

different to what I’ve previously had. To be honest, the pressure was

overwhelming at first. But I realised the important thing is to best utilise the

precious time and learn as much as I could, such as patience and

perseverance. Thankfully, my fellow staff members were kind enough to allow

me to learn while practising. I’m grateful to Jenny Lam for introducing DiS, a

great job opportunity, to me.

The staff members at DiS are all very zealous and warm-hearted, and they

understand the importance of mutual care, respect and cooperation. I will

continue to give my best to my work and hopefully, in the future, I will be able

to break all barriers to help promote the workshop, and facilitate the

development of DiS to enable more exposure for DiS. I look forward to my

breakthrough and increasing participation at DiS’ workshop!

I have been working at Dialogue in Silence (DiS) for nearly two years now. I

learnt about DiS when Mr. Andreas Heinecke, CEO of DiD and DiS, visited Hong

Kong in 2010. At the meeting, he introduced DiS, its mission and impact, and

the development around the globe. We learnt that DiS was founded to raise

awareness and develop greater tolerance among the general public. It is a place

for people to overcome barriers between the worlds of the Deaf and the

hearing. DiS does not only allow participants to learn about the world of silence,

but it also enables Deaf trainers to best utilise their potentials, which in turn

strengthens their self-esteem.

We are honoured to have DiS establishing its first Asian branch in Hong Kong.

At first, I thought it was only a place for hearing people to understand deafness.

I soon discovered that DiS does not present the Deaf as display objects, nor is

DiS an installation simulating deafness – it is a platform where the hearing and

the Deaf meet to show their readiness for overcoming the prejudices and

misunderstandings in society. The main goal of DiS is to break down

psychological and social barriers.

Last February, all 13 of us Deaf trainers successfully completed a 10-day

intensive training. We benefited a great deal from Dr. Ulrich Haze from Germany,

who led the DiS training workshops and gave us instructions and advice.

Without him and his encouragement, we wouldn’t have been able to contribute

to DiS’ success in Hong Kong. We also want to express our heartfelt gratitude

to Mr. Bachir Saïfi from France, who taught us the theory of body language and

ways to use it effectively. A couple of months later, we were grateful to have Mr.

Keith Lee to be the first full-time Asian Deaf trainer for DiS HK. We hope to see

more full-time Deaf trainers in the years to come.

As Dialogue in Silence’s first Asian outlet, DiS in HK has attracted over

thousands of participants to its unique, fun and inspiring workshops.

Participants have learnt to explore and discover their creativity, expression and

potential through interacting with our professional Deaf trainers and experiencing

different ways of communication in our world of silence. We hope to continue to

extend the experience, and to come up with new and creative ideas for further

development of Dialogue in Silence in the future.

ForewordBirthday in the Dark (BiD) is the accompanying fine wine as the Dialogue in the

Dark (DiD) Experiential Exhibition is the main dish to a dinner. In essence, BiD is

an extended version of experiential tour, where participants can take part in a

memorable, one-of-a-kind birthday party under the guidance of the visually

impaired tour guides.

OverviewSince its pilot launch in 2010, BiD has proved to be hugely popular, with over

800 visitors experiencing more than 70 unique birthday parties in 2011, yielding

over HKD170,000 in yearly revenue. As the figures have revealed, an average of

five to six BiDs were held every month throughout the year. December was the

only month where participation plummeted – the reasons could be the diverted

participation in the Christmas version of exhibition tour, and the month’s

overlapping with the travel season.

BiD Clientele

Like the exhibition tour, BiD encompasses a broad client base with participants

ranging between eight to 60 years of age, many of whom were returning

customers, as well as local television hosts and influential figures. To many

participants, BiD is a unique and spectacular birthday experience, once again

cementing BiD’s status as a truly one-of-a-kind birthday party in Hong Kong.

Goals for the Coming YearBoasting an average of six parties per month in 2011, BiD has reached the goal

the team set the year before. We are looking to repeat the feat in the coming

year and target to achieve an average of eight parties per month, not only to

increase the revenue for the exhibition, but also to extend the promotion of this

unique product to even more platforms and a wider spectrum of society. We

believe the goal is achievable as long as we fully utilise the unrivalled

uniqueness of BiD, coupled with effective promotion campaigns, where the

staff’s sales techniques will be enhanced and more promotions channels will be

explored and harnessed.

Dialogue in the Dark WorkshopDialogue in the Dark (DiD) Workshop aims to foster cooperation, trust, self-

confidence, mutual communication, and creativity among participants. The

workshop encourages participants to put themselves in others’ shoes, and to

rethink the meaning of teamwork as they work to complete tasks in the dark.

Since its launch in 2009, DiD Workshop has been helping a considerable

number of corporations and institutions with their management training and

team-building initiatives.

DiD Workshop has run 370 workshops for over 133 corporations and institutions

between April 2010 and March 2012, yielding positive review from participants,

many of whom lauded the exceptional observational skills of the visually

impaired trainers.

Since 2010, we have been collaborating with various local management training

companies to incorporate DiD Workshop into their training programmes. Through

such a mode of collaboration, DiD Workshop has successfully influenced

participants to remove preconceptions that may impede further development,

while our partners help the participants by instilling new ways of thinking and

providing practical training. In retrospect, this mode of collaboration is a ‘win-

win-win’ situation. Workshop participants win by having new insights that can be

applied to their professional and personal development; training companies win

by having a fun and insightful workshop to diversity their training portfolio; while

by creating increased understanding of the visually impaired, DiD is one step

closer to achieving its goal of social inclusivity.

Looking forward, we hope to promote DiD Workshop to more participants at

managerial levels to help them reflect from their experience in the dark, as well

as to encourage their employment of visually impaired persons after

experiencing the world of darkness.

It has been an amazing experience being in the dark for 75 minutes. I was shocked to find that he was visually impaired. Truly an experience to cherish for a lifetime. Thank you DiD!

Such a great experience to be at DiD. Inspires me to use my other senses to feel the ordinary

things around me.

I am very pleased to say that this was worth every single second! Opened the eyes and broadened the mind!

Thank you Alsa for this amazingly beautiful trip. In

the darkness your voice is the most wonderful music I have ever heard in this world. “You

are the apple of my eyes.” Your courage and optimism light up my heart. I hope all

the visually impaired can face their life with a grateful

heart, and I wish them a life of happiness, and the

appreciation of everything by hearing, smelling and

touching.
