Interview to Antonio Serrano Bulnes, Designer

- Do you use natural stone in your projects?

Nowadays, I´m working in urban design but I

would like to work with this material, why not.

I have some experience designing of museum, I

used to work with stone, even I have designed the

granite museum of Quintana de la Serena. It was

a really interesting project and I started to work

with this material which before I unknown.

- How many projects have you designed with our marble?

Im not having the oportunity to do a Project with marble from Macael, but

I would like to do when I have a piece of marble in my workshop.

-When did you discover our product?

-Textures/finishes...what do you prefer? Traditional finising or ...do

you prefer innovation?

I think every traditional finish as bush hammered, flamed, honed, escarci-

lado... are useful to make differents applications and everyone has an iden-

tity.

-Infinite possibilities... Everything you can imagine, imagine in sto-

ne. What do you think about this affirmation? To answer the question,

I would like to transcribe a sentence created by myself that say: “The

language and the

limits of matter,

either natural or ar-

tificial, define all de-

sign an incalculable

extent. Every man

has the right to

seek the limits of

the material to offer the world a new vision of reality transformed”.

(Antonio Serrano 2013).

- Where do you think that our material can be used? I mean... parti-

cular houses, urban design, hotels, commercial centers...

I would like to use in houses and hotels.

10

Page 11: Digital Magazine AEMA (nº 16)

- Can you see any difficulty in our products?

It is necessary to be next to the school and universities, because there are

the places when you can find the future profesionals. Of course, if they

appreciate and know the material, for sure they will use it.

Also it could be interesting to organize some conferences where they can

touch a small sample of this material and also listen an explication of this, I

think it can be useful.

From my point of view, there is a lack of knowledge about the tools as

CNC machines which are used for the stone industry and the possibilities

are huge.

-The following words... Beauty, Luxury, Quality, Purity or exclusivity,

which one do you think are the best for our White Macael?

Beauty, purity and Quality are the best qualities for me.

This fountain consists of overlapping stone pieces, from which

emerges running water, evoking a natural stream.

The compostion of the stone panels give the product great versa-

LIGHT STRUCTURES WITH HEAVY MATERIALS

"As a goal , the architecture should propose

the creation of new relationships between man,

space and technology" Hans Scharoun.

The stone has a long history as way of

construction and it is represented in the archi-

tecture around the world. On the one hand, the

architects are interested in the history of the

materials, and on the other hand, we are interes-

ted in their future (materials), new techniques,

applications, new textures and ways to communi-

cation. From my point of view, the architecture could be understand in two directions: we see

the past which is a proof, but we invest in technology, social and cultural change and the

great unknown: the future.

For this reason, I`m not going to talk about the stone because it has long tradition

(strength and weight) from many years like we know …. until nowadays where the main use

is cladding, tiling, flooring...

Now, we will see some examples in which we work the stone with some properties less

known due to the combination of art and architecture. We changed the concept of noble ma-

terial and robust for another more organic and soft, for example, if we give an example: a

weave, which can be mix with some elements, at the end of the process we can obtain a pro-

duct more natural, light and transparent.

24

Esperanza Salas. Architect

Page 26: Digital Magazine AEMA (nº 16)

25

The first example is a Cortina de Mármol which was built in an exhibition in Washington

DC, where we had to study this material in tension and put the structure on the roof instead of

the floor.

There isnʼt technical data about the strength of the stone and for this reason, we made

some tests in the laboratory about fracture, geometry ... with a final result.

The investigation was obtained by attaching pieces of stone in a series of strings like a

puzzle, marble curtain could be hung without any scaffolding or armor. The cut was made allo-

wing waterjet making intricate cuts unions pieces together stronger.

The finished curtain was 5.5 m high , 620 parts used and a weight of 680 kg . The stone

was only 1cm thick allowing the design to explore the translucency of the material : and ba-

cklight reveal the color and pattern of each piece.

The marble curtain is not only the first masonry hung from the ceiling plane but also the

first use of the material placed in tension to create a structure.

Page 27: Digital Magazine AEMA (nº 16)

26

The second example is Tienda (shop) de Louis Vuitton in Guam. This facade of very

light appearance, played the LV monogram company brand in a repetitive and continuous pat-

tern, like a stone fabric able to withstand earthquakes and typhoons. The items were suspen-

ded props and stainless steel brackets. The stones were carved in factory and divided into units

to make it more easy installation and handling. The openings of the grid do not create attracti-

ve lighting effects only internally both day and night, they also help protect the building against

storm damage.

And the third example are los módulos de piedra en tres dimensiones. It is a modular

stone with a variety of sizes and vertical pleats giving the ball movement and facades, creating

a myriad of lights and shadows with the lightweight fabrics and sinuous.

Similar forms are created corrugations natural tissues marble block and the same time, it

minimizing the waste. It is made in a machine where each cut produces a negative and positi-

ve part of the next.

Page 28: Digital Magazine AEMA (nº 16)

27

Or backlit dimensional modules created from the combination of sophisticated design,

surface treatment in three dimensions and a brief investigation on lighting techniques applied

to the translucent properties of marble. So, we can see the multiplicity of surfaces worked

out, and the light which penetrates through the natural element, revealing its soul and the

harmony of the inner layers showing unexpected colors.

This is a brief summary of a research on the stone and what you are being asked to this

material which continues to reinvent itself, because from my point of view and I think it is the

same in the architecture, the new image depends largely applied technology.

The building systems, materials and technological tools have defined architectural forms

from all ages, and for this reason, we need to continue working in an experimental architec-

ture that will allow us a much greater visual possibilities.

Page 29: Digital Magazine AEMA (nº 16)

28

The architecture becomes dynamic, technology allows incorporating new dimensions to

the tangible material.

At the end, we have to look for specialization and investigation of new materials with

faster, efficient, clean and economic processes. We need to aplly and do not let others do it

for the architect. Let's go ahead and do not let this opportunity slip away.
