MSS

This MSS Standard Practice was developed under the consensus of the MSS Technical Committee 105 and theMSS Coordinating Committee. The content of this Standard Practice is the result of the efforts of competent andconcerned volunteers to provide an effective, clear, and non-exclusive specification that will benefit the industryas a whole. This MSS Standard Practice is intended as a basis for common practice by the manufacturer, theuser, and the general public. The existence of an MSS Standard Practice does not in itself preclude the manufac-ture, sale, or use of products not conforming to the Standard Practice. This document establishes a Standard Practice for Swaged Nipples and Bull Plugs produced for a number ofyears by various manufacturers to varying dimensions although basically similar in principle. Users should noteSwaged Nipples, and Bull Plugs furnished from existing stocks may have slightly different dimensions thanshown herein.

The values stated in either inch units or metric units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text,the metric units are shown in parenthesis. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore,each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result innonconformance with the standard. Tables I through 3 show fittings dimensional requirements in inches.Tables Al and A2 show the dimensional requirements for millimeter dimensional fittings.

STANDARD PRACTICE

SWAGED NIPPLES AND BULL PLUGS(1)

1.1 This Standard Practice covers dimensions,finish, tolerances, marking and material for carbonsteel and alloy steel Swaged Nipples (male endreducing fittings), NPS 1/4 through NPS 12 and BullPlugs (hollow or solid male closures) NPS 1/8through NPS 12. These fittings are made with endsthat are threaded, beveled, square cut, grooved, orany combination of these. Both concentric andeccentric Swaged Nipples are included.

1.2 Partial Compliance Fittings Fittings with specialdimensions and fittings made from non-standardmaterials may be designed and manufactured byagreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser,provided they are marked in accordance with therequirements for partial compliance fittings of Section4.1e.

2.1 The allowable working pressure for fittingsdesigned in accordance with this Standard Practiceshall be calculated as for straight seamless pipe ofequal end preparation in accordance with the rulesestablished in the applicable sections of ASME Codefor Pressure Piping, B31. The pipe wall thickness andtype material shall be that for which the fittings havebeen ordered. Fittings shall be identified by pipe wallthickness and material grade in lieu of pressure rating.

2.2 The design of fittings may be established bymathematical analyses contained in nationallyrecognized pressure vessel or piping codes, or at themanufacturer's option, by proof testing inaccordance with Section 9. Records of design orsuccessful proof tests shall be available at themanufacturer's facility for inspection by thepurchaser. Bull Plugs shall meet the additionalrequirement that the minimum thickness of the headshall be at least 1.5 times the thickness of thecorresponding pipe schedule. For Bull Plugs that aredrilled and tapped, the minimum thickness of thehead shall be increased to accommodate themmtmum L2 thread length as specified in ASMEB1.20.1

3. SIZE

3.1 Bull Plug size is identified by the "nominal pipesize" (NPS). Swaged Nipples are identified with thelarge end size listed first, followed by the small endsize. (see Section 4.ld)

4.1 Each fitting shall have the prescribed informationstamped or otherwise suitably marked with thefollowing:

a) Manufacturer's name or trademark

b) Material Identification

• Fittings shall be marked with the materialgrade in accordance with the applicableASTM Fittings Specifications A 234,A 403, A 420 (e.g., WPB, WP304, WPL6)

• The material lot or heat number traceable tothe material shall be part of the materialidentification

c) Schedule number or nominal wall thicknessdesignation of Bull Plug.

d) Size

• Nominal pipe size (NPS) of Bull Plug

• Nominal pipe size (NPS) - Large end Xsmall end of Swaged Nipples - Example: 2x 1

e) Product Conformance Fittings shall bemarked with the symbol "SP95" to denote fullconformance with this Standard Practice.Partial compliance fittings covered in Section1.2 shall not be marked "SP95". If markedwith an ASTM designation, such marking shallbe followed by the symbol "S58" as requiredby the "Supplementary Requirements" forSpecial Fittings in ASTM A 960.

4.2 Where size and shape of fittings do not permitall the above markings, they may be omitted in thereverse order given above.

4.3 Minimum permanent marking is themanufacturer's name or trademark and the materialgrade. At the manufacturer's option, all othermarking may be permanent or applied on a pressuresensitive label.

4.4 Where steel stamps are used, care should betaken so that marking is not deep enough to reducewall thickness of the fitting below minimum allowed.

5.1 The steel for Swaged Nipples and Bull Plugsshall consist of forgings, round or hex bars or seamlesspipe or tube which conform to the requirements ofASTM A 234, A 403, A 420 or the correspondingASME Specification. When Swaged Nipples and BullPlugs are made of materials other than thosereferenced in this Standard Practice, they should beappropriately marked as agreed upon between themanufacturer and purchaser.

6.1 The dimensions of Swaged Nipples and BullPlugs shall conform to Tables 1 or Al and 2 or A2respectively. Inch tolerances shall conform to Table 3.

7.1 Pipe ends may be threaded, beveled for butt-welding, square cut (plain) for socket welding,grooved, or any combination of these.

7.2 Threaded ends shall be in accordance withASME B1.20.1. Threads shall be chamfered at theends of the fitting to protect the first thread. Thereference point for gauging threads is the last threadscratch on the chamfer cone.

7.3 Butt-welding ends shall be In accordance withASME BI6.25.

704 Grooved ends shall be by agreement between themanufacturer and purchaser.

8.1 Fittings supplied under this specification shall bein accordance with surface quality requirements ofASTM A 234, A 403, or A 420.

9. DESIGN PROOF TEST

9.1 Proof tests shall be made as set forth herein,when the manufacturer chooses proof testing to qualifythe fitting design.

9.2 Test Assembly

9.2.1 Fittings selected for testing shall berepresentative of production and shall meet all therequirements of this Standard Practice and theapplicable material specification. The fittings shall beinspected for dimensional compliance to this StandardPractice. Full material specification test reports,including chemical analysis, tensile and hardnessproperty results shall be included in the records ofthese proof tests.

9.2.2 Straight seamless or welded pipe sections,whose calculated bursting strength is at least as greatas the computed proof test pressure as calculated inSection 9.3 shall be welded to each end of the fittingto be tested. Any internal misalignment greater than0.06 inch (1.6 mm) shall be reduced by taper boring ata slope not over 1:3. Length of pipe sections forclosures shall be at least twice the pipe outsidediameter.

9.3.1 The test fluid shall be water or other fluid usedfor hydrostatic testing.

9.3.2 Hydrostatic pressure shall be applied to the testassembly. The test is successful if the assemblywithstands, without rupture, 105% of the computed testpressure defined below:

Note: Any dimensionally consistent system of unitsmay be used.

9.3.3 As an alternative, if the pipe ruptures, or ifsufficient pressure to rupture a part of the assemblycannot be attained, the test pressure is acceptable if afinal test pressure is at least 105 percent of thecomputed prooftest pressure.

9A Applkability of Test Results It is not necessary toconduct an individual test of fittings with all combinationsof sizes, wall thickness, end connections and grade ofsteel. A successful proof test on one prototype fittingmay represent others to the extent described herein.

904.1 One test fitting may be used to qualifysimilar ones no smaller than one-half nor largerthan two times the nominal pipe size of the testfitting.

9.4.2 The untested fittings shall have a tJD ratio notless than one-half nor more than three times the tJDratio of the test fitting.

9.4.3 The pressure retaining capacity of a fitting madeof various grades of steel will be essentially directlyproportional to the tensile properties of the variousgrades. Therefore, it is necessary to test a prototype inonly a single grade to prove the geometric design of thefittings in other grades.

10.1 Hydrostatic testing of fittings is not required in thisStandard Practice. All fittings shall be capable ofwithstanding without leakage, a test pressure equal tothat prescribed in the specification for the pipe of equalend preparation, with which the fitting's markingidentifies.
