Whether you call them Gut Trucks or Roach Coaches, Mobile Food Trucks have been around for decades. They have been serving millions of people in cities all over the country and around the world.

Tri-State Restaurant Reviews (TSRR) was created in 2012 by Kenny Garrett so he could ask his social media friends where their

favorite places to eat were. Five years later, there are well over 21,000 people on Tri-State Dining and TSRR doing the very same thing.

In that time, we’ve seen a lot of great reviews! Some are featured in this initial edition of The Tri-State Dining Restaurant Guide. We’ve also seen some that weren’t thought out very well before put into print or posted online. That said, Tri-State Restaurant Reviews is an opinion page and those opinions can be vastly different.

So, when preparing to write a positive or negative review about a restaurant, here are a few suggestions to consider;

1. You’re painting a picture for your reader. Be specific about things you see and smell; A. atmosphere, B. décor, C. aromas in the air, D. dishes as they pass by2. How was the service? A. Was the staff organized? B. Were they polite?3. Take pictures of the food and your surroundings A. Food pictures are best without using the flash of your camera. B. Take a picture before you start eating. There’s nothing worse than reading about someone’s food experience that is going great only to see a half-eaten plate of food. Remember, with food sight and smell come before taste and we can’t taste your food online (yet). C. Take a picture of the menu. We have a special place on tristatedining.com for restaurant menus.4. Include contact information. A. Business name, B. address, C. phone numbers, D. website, E. social media sites listed, F. hours of operation.

5. Describe the food. A.Tell us about the flavor. Don’t just say it was “awesome”. How was it awesome? Was it sweet like a donut or did it have a spicy flavor of Buffalo Wings?6. Food Quality. A. Freshness. B. Correct temperature?7. Did you like the food? Tell us why?

8. If it’s a negative review, was it your first? A. Did you try to talk to management? B. If it was your first, consider giving them another try before writing that negative review. C. There’s a huge difference between a negative review and a complaint. TSRR moderates all posts. “Complaint Only” posts are deleted before being seen by the group. D. Talking to management provides them an opportunity to know of and fix an issue. E. Social media is just that, social. It helps the customer and the establishment hold each other accountable. Some appreciate that, some don’t.9. Pricing A. It is common to include what your experience cost you. B. Did the price coincide with expected quality and quantity?

We’ve seen first timers’ come onto TSRR with outstanding reviews because they put some thought into what they experienced soon after leaving the establishment, while their memories were still fresh. Positive reviews are fun, because you can use all of that excitement to pull us into your story.

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading our suggestions for writing a review on TSRR. We enjoy seeing all of your great food pictures and reading about your experiences around the tri-state and across this great country.

HELLO READERS AND WELCOME TO MY LITTLE ‘NOTE-TO-SELF’.

When I was asked to write the quarterly health and fitness column for Tri-State Dining’s Restaurant Guide, I told myself I was up for the challenge! While this is a new challenge for me, healthy living and fitness are not. I have been a personal trainer for over 18 years and a fitness buff for over 25. I love to eat and create foods, sometimes healthy and sometimes not. I love to bake cookies, cakes, and muffins but also fresh crisp salads and grilling out. I would say that cooking is my second passion. So, with that being said, off I go with a little ‘note-to-self’, that even I need a reminder of, from time to time.

I named this ‘note’ Sugar-Sugar, for a good reason! Sugar has become a true addiction and is labeled the ‘cocaine’ ingredient in food. Why? Well, the more you eat the more you want! It triggers the dopamine centers in your brain and the more sugar you take in the more you stimulate and release it, which leads to craving after craving, aka, addiction.

While sugar, is made from the earth through a plant called sugar cane, most of what is in our foods is bleached and processed. Which is technically called refined sugar. When I was in college, (I graduated in the 90’s btw), I thought I was making good choices. It was the ‘fat-free fad’ and I didn’t eat fried foods. Instead, I ate a lot of salads, drank mainly water and Diet Mt. Dew. I snacked on fat-free crackers and candy, worked out five or more days a week and I thought wow, I am one healthy girl! That all came to an end, when the truth about sugar started to surface through my nutrition

classes, seminars and additional research I did as the years went on.

After I found out the ‘dirty’ truth about sugar and sugar substitutes, which we will address here in a little bit, I became a self-professed ‘water nut’ along with the queen of sugar detox challenges! I hate to be the bearer of bad news when it comes to sugar, because I truly love to eat and drink it from time to time. I have a crazy sweet tooth.

Unfortunately, sugar is absolutely becoming the driving force to obesity and chronic illnesses in America. I mean really, look at the majority of our children and adults these days. Exercise has gone out the window, food on the go and sugary drinks like colas and fruit pouches have become a way of life. Several years back, I was asked to be part of a committee at my son’s middle school. The school received what was called the Healthy Hero’s Grant. The school was awarded this grant because they had one of the highest body fat percentages among the students and staff in the Tri-State area.

All I could say was, YES! I wanted to be a part of bringing awareness and to come up with creative ideas to help incorporate more activity and better food choices on the menu. I mean seriously, when I was growing up, I rode my bike all over the place, played outside, and it was a treat to go out to eat! It seems most Americans these days tend to lay on the couch watching TV or playing video games, go out to eat and grab a sugary drink when they are thirsty.

Did you know that the average American consumes over 20 teaspoons of sugar a day? The recommended amount is 4-6 teaspoons! Holy cow!!!!!!! No wonder we are overweight and tired. The key is education. Parents can’t make changes if they don’t know and our kids depend on us to guide them.

I know that some people have no alternative but to use artificial sweeteners, but if at all possible,



it really is just better to eat the real deal. Or use the most natural substitute you can find.

So, how can you get yourself to the suggested amount of sugar intake per day, curb your cravings and detox? First off, now that you know the dirty truth about sugar, take the time to read labels! Sugar is hidden in so much processed food it is not even funny. To be honest, the less you can eat processed food and drinks the better off you will be. For example, an average can of cola has about 15-20 teaspoons of sugar, per serving. If that is not a wakeup call, I am not sure what is.

I usually tell my clients to start by drinking water with lemon, or unsweet tea with your meals. The tea can still give you the caffeine boost, but eliminate the sugar high and then crash. Next, I suggest that they incorporate fresh fruit for a sugar source. Fresh fruit is full of good fiber and will help fill you up along with satisfy your sweet tooth. Natural sugars are truly the way to go. Tell yourself you are worth it and get your health along with your kid’s health back on track.

I hope you have enjoyed and learned a thing or two from this little ‘note’ and made a note-to-self! I promise, “You will thank me later”! Why do you say that, you ask? Well, because you will feel better, be more alert, and probably lose some weight too! It is a total win-win. Everything in moderation is the key. You can cheat a little, but the key word is a little! TSD: What is your favorite dish that you serve?

Frank: The Eggplant Parmesan. I grew up eating and making this dish.

TSD: What is the most popular dish on your menu?

Frank: Our Meat Stromboli. I get my meats straight from a butcher. I only use premium ingredients and everything is made from scratch daily.

Lombardi’s serves an authentic NY pizza. We have been their customer since they opened in Henderson originally and continue to frequent them since they moved to Evansville. When you go, try their Garlic Knots too. Dipped in a tasty mixture of Olive Oil and Parmesan Cheese, they are even more amazing.

Today, my husband, a friend and I decided to try out Yangs Shabu Shabu. It's a very unassuming

type of place, quiet décor and calm music. When we went for lunch, we were the only ones there. The restaurant is very clean and I really did like the elegance of it...it wasn't gaudy with oriental decorations like some places can be! The tables were very nice and clean, and the seating had larger chairs than most restaurants. I mention the chairs because as a larger woman, sometimes it can be pure agony to try to sit in chairs with arms or rickety old chairs that squeak every time you move. When we got there, my husband and I were early, so he opted for a green tea with mango bubble and mango flavoring. I am not a fan of chewing my drink, so I did not order one, but I tried his and it was very sweet! I would consider those more of a dessert or after dinner drink...not so much with the meal itself. We didn't notice the price until the end, but that one tea was $5 by itself. So I think it is probably better as a dessert, lol. Now, I have this quirk of always ordering the Crab Rangoon. They're my addiction. I'm extremely picky and it takes a good Rangoon to please me. These were different from most I've had. These were smaller, the perfect one bite size. These were also very light and crisp, they were not over fried or fried in oil that was too hot (you can tell when things are flash fried or fried in old oil or fried then refried). These had just the right amount of crisp. They also had just the right amount of sweet. My taste is for a creaminess with notes of crab but not overpowering. And I'm happy to say, these did not taste like tuna. I was amused by their dipping sauce however, as I'm very familiar with it. It's a sauce you can buy over at the Asian market on Green River, it's a spring roll sauce

that is quite tasty. So I'm amused that a place that has a sauce bar like this place, uses a bottled sauce like that one. Anyways! Those were gone so fast, I could have eaten a dozen of them, lol. And now the main dishes. We all opted for the lunch plates, because we wanted a sampler type of thing. I got the herb broth, and everyone else got the spicy one. The setup is quite nice...hotpot on the burner, food in a plastic boat type dish.

The waitress was extremely helpful, though perhaps a bit more than I would have preferred. She mixed the sauce for us so I never actually got to see the sauces at the sauce bar. She also put our food into the pots to start with, showing us how to do it. It was interesting. The thin sliced meats cooked super fast. Like seconds fast. They really only needed a quick stir to be cooked. The vegetables were interesting. Huge variety...cabbage and corn and carrots and celery. I'd never had boiled celery before, but I think it was my favorite! The corn was delicious as well. The broth really enhanced the tastes of the food. The greens, like the spinach and cabbage, cooked very fast as

Dick Clarks in Princeton. In has been in business since 1947. I can remember eating here when I was a teenager. Always been

impressed with their burgers. They grind fresh beef and the burgers are always juicy. And talk about value! A triple cheeseburger is only $4.39! Toppings are always fresh, as is their salad bar. They also have pizza and Stromboli. One of our

I actually googled fish balls when I got home, and they're a type of fish that is pounded ad rolled and made into meatball shapes. They're apparently extremely classic for a hot pot meal. For lack of a better word...I found them to be squeaky. Like chewy squeaky, reminded me very much of the one and only time I tried squid...had that same crunch with squeaky, chewy quality. To someone who loves seafood, I'm sure they're delicious. To someone like me, with barely amateur experience, both the texture and flavor were off. No one at my table would eat them. I do not like tofu. Again, texture issues. My husband coaxed me into trying a tiny piece and it was indeed very smooth and velvety, like a very flavorful cube of gelatin is how I would describe it. It most definitely soaks up the flavor of the broth! I didn't like it because of the texture

though, even though the taste was not unpleasant. They also had tofu skin. None of us liked it. Rubbery chewy...not tasty. Nope. The noodles were probably the best part for me. I just let them sit in the broth on low heat for a while, and they were absolutely delicious. I tried one of the things floating in the herb broth, and had to spit it out. No clue what it was, but it was not edible. I think it was some type of mushroom. So the broth was good...the stuff in it to flavor it? Not so much, lol. All in all, it was a fun experience. I know what I like now, so next time I will order off the menu. But for a lunch dish, it was fun and interactive. I enjoyed how light the food was as well...very vegetable and thin meat heavy, so a perfect lunch that didn't weigh us down. A bit messy, and they definitely need to give customers more napkins, but very much a place I will go back to.

favorites is called the Bob Key Stromboli which has sausage, pepperoni, green pepper, red onion, Beef, black olive, and BBQ. They also have the Bob Key Super Deluxe, which has all the same ingredients as on the Stromboli I just described. It is Friday, so we are having the catfish fiddlers. You can get fillets if you like. The fiddlers come with two sides. I love their homemade slaw. I also tried a baked potato, pickle, onion and Rye bread all for $9.29. This meal is available all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We arrive around 1:30pm Friday and were waited on immediately by a very friendly server named Susie. They also have fried chicken and chicken livers. I never had them, but they're supposed to be very good. Talked to the couple across the aisle from us and they said they love the chicken here and that's what they were having. They also have steaks. New York strips, Delmonico, Rib Eyes and sirloins. Pork chops, barbecued ribs, a Beef Manhattan that I would love to try one day. The salad and pizza bar is Monday through Friday for lunch. Also Tuesday and Wednesday for dinner. I also have Caesar salad and Greek salad and

the usual French Fries, onion rings, breaded zucchini, mushrooms, cauliflower, green beans, and mozzarella sticks. Also, they have a many sandwiches, such as BLT, roast beef, fish, ham and cheese, hand cut breaded or grilled tenderloins, hotdogs and more. They also have spaghetti and lasagna and Italian chicken, frog legs and salmon and shrimp. Their homemade desserts are very impressive. I had the buttermilk chess pie and it tasted just like what my grandmother used to make. The coconut cream pie looks exactly like my grandmothers, also. I'm going to get that next time. For the month of December, they're doing a homemade cheesecake with the chocolate ganache crust and raspberries and whip cream. Looks good, but I don't think I can eat another bite. And all of their hard ice cream is homemade, just like Dick made in 1947 when he opened. Dick has passed away now and his son, Jeff, owns and operates the business. Any one coming through Princeton should stop and give Dick Clarks a try. It's off the beaten path on Prince Street, a couple blocks north east of the Square. Well worth the stop.
