The D-Link DIR-100 is an Ethernet Broadband Router. The D-Link DIR-100 enables users to quickly and easily share a high speedInternet connection. The D-Link DIR-100 also incorporates many advanced eatures, traditionally ound in more expensive routers.

Ater completing the steps outlined in the Quick Installation Guide (included in your package) you will have the ability to share a singleInternet connection as well as sharing inormation and resources such as les and printers.The DIR-100 is compatible with most popular operating systems, including Macintosh, Linux and Windows, and can be integratedinto an existing network. Technology Introduction

Introduction to Broadband Router Technology

A router is a device that orwards data packets rom a source to a destination. Routers orward data packets using IP addresses andnot a MAC address. A router will orward data rom the Internet to a particular computer on your LAN.The inormation that makes up the Internet gets moved around using routers. When you click on a link on a web page, you send arequest to a server to show you the next page. The inormation that is sent and received rom your computer is moved rom yourcomputer to the server using routers. A router also determines the best route that your inormation should ollow to ensure that theinormation is delivered properly.

A router controls the amount o data that is sent through your network by eliminating inormation that should not be there. This

provides security or the computers connected to your router, because computers rom the outside cannot access or send inormationdirectly to any computer on your network. The router determines which computer the inormation should be orwarded to and sendsit. I the inormation is not intended or any computer on your network, the data is discarded. This keeps any unwanted or harmulinormation rom accessing or damaging your network.

Introduction to FirewallsA rewall is a device that sits between your computer and the Internet that prevents unauthorized access to or rom your network.A rewall can be a computer using rewall sotware or a special piece o hardware built specically to act as a rewall. In most

circumstances, a rewall is used to prevent unauthorized Internet users rom accessing private networks or corporate LANs andIntranets.

A rewall watches all o the inormation moving to and rom your network and analyzes each piece o data. Each piece o data ischecked against a set o criteria that the administrator congures. I any data does not meet the criteria, that data is blocked anddiscarded. I the data meets the criteria, the data is passed through. This method is called packet ltering.A rewall can also run specic security unctions based on the type o application or type o port that is being used. For example,a rewall can be congured to work with an FTP or Telnet server. Or a rewall can be congured to work with specic UDP or TCP

ports to allow certain applications or games to work properly over the Internet.

Introduction to Local Area NetworkingLocal Area Networking (LAN) is the term used when connecting several computers together over a small area such as a building orgroup o buildings. LANs can be connected over large areas. A collection o LANs connected over a large area is called a Wide AreaNetwork (WAN).

A LAN consists o multiple computers connected to each other. There are many types o media that can connect computers together.The most common media is CAT5 cable (UTP or STP twisted pair wire.) On the other hand, wireless networks do not use wires;instead they communicate over radio waves. Each computer must have a Network Interace Card (NIC), which communicates thedata between computers. A NIC is usually a 10Mbps network card, or 10/100Mbps network card, or a wireless network card.Most networks use hardware devices such as hubs or switches that each cable can be connected to in order to continue the connectionbetween computers. A hub simply takes any data arriving through each port and orwards the data to all other ports. A switch ismore sophisticated, in that a switch can determine the destination port or a specic piece o data. A switch minimizes network tracoverhead and speeds up the communication over a network.

Networks take some time in order to plan and implement correctly. There are many ways to congure your network. You may wantto take some time to determine the best network set-up or your needs.

ResetTo reset the system settings to actory deaults, please ollow these steps:

1. Leave the device powered on, do not disconnect the power. Press the reset button and hold (use a paper-clip)3. Keep the button pressed about 10 seconds4. Release the buttonThe DIR-100 will then automatically reboot itsel.

Installation

Getting Started

Installation LocationThe DIR-100 unctions as an Ethernet LAN or your home or oce use. The Router can be placed on a shel or desktop and ideallyyou should be able to see the LED indicators on the ront i you need to view them or troubleshooting. No special wiring or coolingrequirements are needed but when you are ready to place the Router, you must take into account the ollowing guidelines:

Place the DIR-100 on a fat horizontal plane. Keep away rom any heating devices. Do not place in a dusty or wet environment.

The recommended operational specications o the DIR-100 are:Temperature 3o F ~ 131o FHumidity 5 % ~ 90 %In addition, remember to turn o the power, remove the power cord rom the outlet, and keep your hands dry when you install thehardware.

Network SettingsTo use the DIR-100 correctly, you have to properly congure the network settings o your computers. The deault IP address o the DIR-100

is 192.168.0.1, and the deault subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. These addresses can be changed as needed, but the deault values areused in this manual. I the TCP/IP environment o your computer has not yet been congured, you can reer to Conguring Your PCsto Connect to the DIR-100 to congure it.

For example:1. Congure your computer IPas 19.168.0.3, subnet maskas 55.55.55.0 and gatewayas 19.168.0.1

. Conigure your computers to obtain TCP/IP settings automatically rom the DHCP server eature o the DIR-100Since the IP address o the DIR-100 is 19.168.0.1, the IP address o your computer must be 19.168.0.X (where X is a number between

and 54.) Each computer on your network must have a dierent IP address within that range. The deault gateway must be 19.168.0.1

ConfgurationThe DIR-100 provides an embedded Web-based management utility making it operating system independent. You can congureyour DIR-100 through the Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer browser in MS Windows, Macintosh, Linux or UNIX basedplatorms. All that is needed is a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator with Java Script enabled.

Log inOpen your web browser and type in the IP address o the DIR-100 into the Location(or Netscape) or Address(or IE) eld andpress Enter. The deault IP address o the DIR-100 is 192.168.0.1

For example: http://192.168.0.1

Ater the connection is established, the logon screen will pop up.To log in as an administrator, enter the username o admin and thepassword (there isnt a deault password, leave it blank). Click the OKbutton. I the password is correct, the web-management interace willappear.

You may run the setup wizard to quickly setup your router.

Click Internet Connection Setup Wizard to launch the wizard.

LAN Setup

Router Settings

The IP address o your router on the local area network.

Your local area network settings are based on theaddress assigned here. For example, 19.168.0.1.

The subnet mask o your router on the local areanetwork.

This entry is optional. Enter a domain name or thelocal network. The DHCP server will give this domain

name to the computers on the LAN. So, or example,i you enter mynetwork.net here, and you have a PCwith a name o chris, that PC will be known as chris.mynetwork.net. Note, however, i the routers WANsettings speciy Dynamic IP Address, and the ISPsDHCP server assigns a domain name to the router,that domain name will override any name you enterhere.

When DNS Relay is enabled, the router plays the roleo a DNS server. DNS requests sent to the router areorwarded to the ISPs DNS server. This providesa constant DNS address that LAN computers canuse, even when the router obtains a dierent DNSserver address rom the ISP upon re-establishingthe WAN connection. You should disable DNS relayi you implement a LAN-side DNS server as a virtualserver.

DHCP Server Settings

Once the router is properly congured and this

DHCP Server option is enabled, the DHCP Serverwill manage the IP addresses and other networkconguration inormation or computers and otherdevices connected to the Local Area Network. Thereis no need or you to do this yoursel.

The computers (and other devices) connectedto your LAN also need to have their TCP/IPconguration set to DHCP or Obtain an IP addressautomatically.

To use the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) eatureclick on Enabled. UPNP provides compatibility withnetworking equipment, sotware and peripherals.

Unchecking the box will not allow the DIR-100 torespond to pings. Blocking the Ping may providesome extra security rom hackers. Check the boxto allow the WAN port to be pinged.

You may set the port speed o the WAN port to10Mbps, 100Mbps, or auto. Some older cable orDSL modems may require you to set the port speed

to 10Mbps.

TroubleshootingThis chapter provides solutions to problems that can occur during the installation and operation o the DIR-100. Read the ollowingdescriptions i you are having problems. (The examples below are illustrated in Windows XP. I you have a dierent operatingsystem, the screenshots on your computer will look similar to the ollowing examples.)

1. Why cant I access the web-based conguration utility?

When entering the IP address o the D-Link router (19.168.0.1 or example), you are not connecting to a website on the Internet orhave to be connected to the Internet. The device has the utility built-in to a ROM chip in the device itsel. Your computer must be onthe same IP subnet to connect to the web-based utility.

Make sure you have an updated Java-enabled web browser. We recommend the ollowing:

Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher Fireox 1.5 or higher

Veriy physical connectivity by checking or solid link lights on the device. I you do not get a solid link light, try using a dierentcable or connect to a dierent port on the device i possible. I the computer is turned o, the link light may not be on.

Disable any internet security sotware running on the computer. Sotware rewalls such as Zone Alarm, Black Ice, Sygate, Norton

Personal Firewall, and Windows

XP rewall may block access to the conguration pages. Check the help les included with yourrewall sotware or more inormation on disabling or conguring it.

Congure your Internet settings:

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click the Internet Options Icon. From the Security tab, clickthe button to restore the settings to their deaults.

Click the Connection tab and set the dial-up option to Never Dial a Connection. Click the LAN Settings button. Makesure nothing is checked. Click OK.

Go to the Advanced tab and click the button to restore these settings to their deaults. Click OK three times.

Close your web browser (i open) and open it.

Access the web management. Open your web browser and enter the IP address o your D-Link router in the address bar. This shouldopen the login page or your the web management.

I you still cannot access the conguration, unplug the power to the router or 10 seconds and plug back in. Wait about 30 secondsand try accessing the conguration. I you have multiple computers, try connecting using a dierent computer.

2. What can I do if I forgot my password?

I you orgot your password, you must reset your router. Unortunately this process will change all your settings back to the actorydeaults.

To reset the router, locate the reset button (hole) on the rear panel o the unit. With the router powered on, use a paperclip to hold thebutton down or 10 seconds. Release the button and the router will go through its reboot process. Wait about 30 seconds to accessthe router. The deault IP address is 19.168.0.1. When logging in, the username is admin and leave the password box empty.

3. Why cant I connect to certain sites or send and receive emails when connecting through my router?

I you are having a problem sending or receiving email, or connecting to secure sites such as eBay, banking sites, and Hotmail, wesuggest lowering the MTU in increments o ten (Ex. 149, 148, 147, etc).

To nd the proper MTU Size, youll have to do a special ping o the destination youre trying to go to. A destination could be anothercomputer, or a URL.

Click on Start and then click Run.

Windows 95, 98, and ME users type in command (Windows NT, 000, and XP users type in cmd) and pressEnter (or click OK).

Once the window opens, youll need to do a special ping. Use the ollowing syntax:

ping [url] [-f] [-l] [MTU value]

Example: ping yahoo.com -f -l 1472

You should start at 147 and work your way down by 10 each time. Once you get a reply, go up by until you get a ragmentedpacket. Take that value and add 8 to the value to account or the various TCP/IP headers. For example, lets say that 145 was theproper value, the actual MTU size would be 1480, which is the optimum or the network were working with (145+8=1480).

Once you nd your MTU, you can now congure your router with the proper MTU size.

To change the MTU rate on your router ollow the steps below:

Open your browser, enter the IP address o your router (19.168.0.1) and click OK.

Enter your username (admin) and password (blank by deault). Click OK to enter the web conguration page or thedevice.

Click on the Home tab and click the WAN button.

To change the MTU enter the number in the MTU eld and click the Apply button to save your settings.

Test your email. I changing the MTU does not resolve the problem, continue changing the MTU in increments oten.

Networking Basics

Check your IP address

Ater you install your new D-Link adapter, by deault, the TCP/IP settings should be set to obtain an IP address rom a DHCP server(i.e. wireless router) automatically. To veriy your IP address, please ollow the steps below.

Click on Start > Run. In the run box type cmdand click OK.

At the prompt, type ipconfgand press Enter.

This will display the IP address, subnet mask, and the

deault gateway o your adapter.

I the address is 0.0.0.0, check your adapter installation,security settings, and the settings on your router. Somerewall sotware programs may block a DHCP requeston newly installed adapters.

I you are connecting to a wireless network at a hotspot(e.g. hotel, coee shop, airport), please contact an employee or administrator to veriy their wireless network settings.

Statically Assign an IP address

I you are not using a DHCP capable gateway/router, or you need to assign a static IP address, please ollow the steps below:

Step 1Windows XP - Click on Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.

Windows 000 - From the desktop, right-click My Network Places > Properties.

Step 2Right-click on the Local Area Connection which represents your D-Link network adapter and select Properties.

Step 3Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.

Step 4Click Use the following IP address and enter an IP address that is on the same subnet as your network or the LAN IP addresson your router.

Example: I the routers LAN IP address is 19.168.0.1, make your IP address 19.168.0.Xwhere X is a number between and 99. Make sure that the number you choose is not inuse on the network. Set Deault Gateway the same as the LAN IP address o your router(19.168.0.1).

Set Primary DNS the same as the LAN IP address o your router (19.168.0.1). The SecondaryDNS is not needed or you may enter a DNS server rom your ISP.

Step 5Click OK twice to save your settings.
