SAIL CANYON LAKE!

WOW! Where has this year gone It seems like yesterday I was intro-ducing myself to all of you I only

have a few short more months as commodore for LCYC We are entering what I affection-ately call Second Summer I have heard in other parts of the country it is called Fall The days are getting shorter, but the temperature is not quite dropping like we would like

Our days are filled with the new school

year, football, and planning for Wurstfest Lynn Simpson, Vice-Commodore has been diligently working on Wurstfest Regatta all year If you haven’t figured out where you would like to volunteer, just give her a call or drop her an email She will find the perfect place for you The two weekends are filled

with fun, food, friends, and sailing You don‘t have to give up an entire day, just a few hours will be a big help

Another fun day to volunteer is our annual Fall workday Bring some garden gloves and a few paint brushes and whatever else you may want to work with There is always brush to trim and a kitchen to give a deep cleaning fol-lowed with fellowship The best thing is after a great lunch there will be time for sailing

The nominating committee has been busy working to find the leadership for 2017-2018 If the Board of Governors is not quite what you are ready for remember there are many committees that help keep our club running Volunteering to chair a committee or work

SAIL CANYON LAKE!

During the Annual Wurstfest Regatta (Nov 4th-Nov 6th & Nov 11th-Nov13th) LCYC will deploy Launch

Ramp Crews to assist and supervise the launch-ing and retrieval of boats during the event on both weekends

In preparing for a Safe, Fun and Efficient launch and retrieval process we wanted to re-mind our membership about the process and ask for your continued cooperation during the event and to remind everyone of several items that will facilitate our and your enjoyment during the Wurstfest weekends

The upper dry parking areas of the club grounds generally are taken over by car, trailer and camper parking during the event Anyone who has a boat parked to the east of the entry gate is encouraged to get their boats launched early (on Friday if possible) to prevent getting your boat blocked in Additionally, the dock & grounds crew will be blocking off the launch ramp parking area at noon on Friday so please do not park any cars or trailers in this area; we need the entire space clear for rigging of board boats and for traffic control

The first few sections of the dock at the ramp will also be blocked off as a reminder not to tie your boats in this area If you launch early, please move your boats into the lagoon parking areas or toward the lake end of the docks

After racing is completed please be consider-ate about where you sail into and where you dock your boat If you don't plan on pulling out immediately then we ask that you keep to the lake end of the docks to facilitate us pulling out those who are leaving and perhaps allow us to give priority space to our out of town guests who have a long drive The maneuvering around idle boats at the dock during haul-out is the single most important factor that slows down the entire haul-out process for everyone

The Launch Ramp Crews generally do a great job of keeping everyone safe and expedit-ing the launch and haul-outs and controlling traffic and boat retrieval order Your under-standing of our process and cooperation is much appreciated

Have a Fun and Safe Wurstfest Regatta!

WurstfestRegatta Lynn SimpsonWurstfest Regatta I - Boardboats & Centerboards - November 4 - 6Wurstfest Regatta I I- Keel Boats & Multihulls - November 11 - 13

The Wurstfest Regatta countdown is on! The website is up and running and registration is underway! This is an

exciting time at LCYC as the final preparations are made for this red carpet sailing event. The various committee chairs have been working hard organizing and planning.

On The Water: Ray Leubner has worked his magic. The RC teams for the 4 race courses over the two weekends are almost complete.

Publicity: Kathy Leubner has made sure that all of the documents uploaded to the WF website are in order. On top of that, Kathy & Claudia Roeschmann design graphics for the WFR shirts, welcome banner, and, and, and, the list goes on.

WFR Raffle: Donna Rice and Jenny Faulkner have been working the raffle since the beginning of the year. Many vendors have been contacted with great results. I’m told that we have a spectacular line-up of raffle items for 2016. I can’t wait to buy tickets!

Ramp/Launch/Retrieval/Safety: Jean Junker WFR I & Harry Sutherland WFR II, will be orchestrating the procession of boats and trailers on and off of the ramp.

Registration & Website: Elizabeth Bentzen is our website expert. She will also be handling registration and all of the details that go with it.

Entertainment: Pat Ketchum has lined up a great band for both weekends. The 5 star, Jazz Blues and Diamonds. I think I need say no more!

Volunteer Coordinator: Carolyn Popp makes sure all of the volunteer names are on the master list, dinner list, and also makes name tags for all!

Food Chairs: Ed & Georgina Taddia are responsible for coordinating all of the WF meals (about 1000 meals over the 2 weekends.)

At my request the dinner menu for this year has been tweaked. Look forward to a hearty dinner of:

Kiolbassa SausageCabbage Rolls in Tomato Sauce

Parsley PotatoesSeasoned Green Beans with Bacon

Sauerkraut & ApplesauceHoney Wheat Pretzels

Pumpernickel RollsApple Strudel & German Chocolate Cake

Tea, Lemonade, Ice water & BeerI have sampled the new menu. Simply put,

VOLUNTEERS - VOLUNTEERS Yes, volunteers are still needed to help with:

WFR Raffle: Contact Donna & Jenny at [email protected]. Help is needed for both Saturday eveningsRamp/Launch/Retrieval: Help needed both weekends on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Contact Jean at [email protected]. Contact Harry at [email protected]. Saturday Dinner: Ed & Georgina need lots of kitchen help for both weekends. Contact them at [email protected].

Food Prep - 10 volunteers from 1-5PM.Servers - 10 volunteers from 4-7PM.Clean-up Crew - 5 volunteers from 6-8:30PM

Also Needed - A team of 2 -3 to take care of Subway Sandwiches on Saturday, November 4th from 8:30-10:30AM. These sandwiches are pre-ordered. We just need a team to put together the RC lunches and hand out the sandwiches to the sailors that have ordered them.

Last month I mentioned that it takes an army of volunteers to successfully run Wurstfest Regatta. Please, this event needs every available hand to make the regatta run smoothly. I’m counting on the LCYC mem-bership to lend a hand. Please contact me at [email protected] to let me know where you would like to help out.

LCYC’s 26th annual SEW-MAD Regatta was definitely a WOW event! There were 15 registrants all making it to the start-

ing line Forty one women sailor’s made up 4 fleets: J22, PHRF A & B, and Portsmouth What a phenomenal turnout, I couldn’t be happier!

The fleets were officially set at 11:20 am The competitors briefing followed and in-cluded a review of basic rules, courses, starting sequences, basic right of way rules, fleet and racing flags and safety The racers now well prepared were eager to ready their boats and head out to the course for some racing action! A special tribute was in order for Sandra E Walker, who sadly passed away earlier this year Sandra’s favorite colors were black and red Each skipper received a streamer made up of two colors, yes, black and red Specific instructions were given to tie the streamers to a backstay, bimini, or in the case of the two sunfish secure it to the top of the mast The result a beautiful sight of red and black swirling in the wind, honoring Sandra!

The 1:30 pm start time was postponed…no wind in sight! But wait, the streamers were starting to dance around, yes, the wind was fill-ing in A course was set windward-leeward… race 1 was underway Races 2 & 3 followed Each race was sailed with competitive spirit and determination The 4 fleets were domi-nated by seasoned and savvy racers including: Jessica Powers in her Flying Scot, Terry Beasley

SEW-MAD Regatta Lynn Simpson

in her Capri 22, Margaret McGill in her J80, and Team Bling in the J22 These teams re-ally demonstrated how great racing is done Bottom line, everyone was having fun, it was a great day for all!

Back in the clubhouse the competitors enjoyed sharing their racing stories The de-licious dinner; SEW-MAD BBQ chicken, potato salad, beans, salad, & strawberry poke cake was enjoyed by all Before the much an-ticipated awards presentation got underway, Linda McDavitt of Austin, shared a little of

her yearlong adventure of the Clip-per Around The World Race Truly awe inspiring, what an adventure! Millie McVey was our next speaker; she shared of how SEW-MAD began and highlighted the details on what has kept the regatta going over the years “Thank you,” Linda and Mil-

lie Ruth Madorski spoke words of thanks to all who had participated in the regatta Sandra’s son Eric was introduced Next-up, the awards ceremony The first call to order, crack open the champagne and have all of the women sailors come forward and take a flute Flutes in hand, we were ready to give out the awards Cheers and applause erupted as first place winners received their awards:

Margaret McGill & Elizabeth Bentzen - PHRF A

Terry Beasley – PHRF BTeam Bling – J22

Jessica Powers – Portsmouth Fleet

Everyone is a winner in SEW-MAD, and rightly so, trophies were awarded to each of the entrants! For 2016 a perpetual board-boat trophy was awarded The beautiful trophy was graciously donated by Jean and Linda Junker The perpetual trophies which now include keelboats and board-boats are awarded to the skipper with lowest cumulative fleet score of the largest keelboat and board-boat fleet

The winners for 2016:Terry Beasley and crew Sarita Vannoy and

Linda Robinson – PHRF BJessica Powers and crew Ashleigh Corsino

– Portsmouth Fleet

Congratulations Terry and Jessica, well done!

It was time to wrap up a truly spectacular day Words of thanks’ were due to all of the volunteers that made this event so very spe-cial: Ed Taddia – for preparing and grilling some mighty tasty chicken Carol Harris, Sue Radley, and Joe O’Brien for taking care of the galley Our race committee team: Jake Mathis, Bill McVey, Chris Powers, Morgan Powers, Glen Graham, Bill Cook, Jim Kondziela, and Joe Bowman Photographer: Rhett Roberts, who snapped over 1500 pictures! Ray Leubner, for loaning his good camera! Award designs and engraving: Lonna O’Brien and Elizabeth Bentzen Bill McVey for loaning his boat Good Grief And last but not least, to all of LCYC’s women sailors who came out to support this year’s regatta “I Thank You All” Cheers!

Fall Series Racing Jake Mathis

September 10th and 11th LCYC held its first weekend of our Fall Series Sailboat Races

The Forecast was anything but pleasing for Saturdays Keelboat races The Weather Guess-ers forecast 3 to 5 mph from the north In truth the winds were from 8 to 14 mph with gust close to 22 mph from the West in race #1, the South for race #2 and East for race #3 Kept the Chase Boat busy changing the Mark Positions between each race Overall all the Skippers were pleasantly surprised with the good wind and changing conditions

Sundays Board Boat race winds were fore-cast to be from the South at 6 to 10 mph Perfect weather and decant winds However the forecast was dead wrong! Race #1 was almost reasonable with 4 to 7 mph winds The second Race was anything but pleasant! After all fleets started the winds went to 0 with gust to 2 mph After 48 minutes of racing with none of the fleets moving and temperatures rising to near 100 deg I abandoned the race Will try to make up the missed races in the next two weekends

LCYC1967

PortCo-CaptainsAs I write this, I’m composing the shop-

ping list for the Shrimp Boil at LCYC on September 24 Ed Booth will host this event - with a little help from his friends I hope you were there!

Thanks so much to the Kannawin family for preparing and serving the Commodore’s Breakfast on September 11 They were as-sisted by Sue Radley, who knows EVERY-THING about the kitchen

Be sure to read your email blasts from LCYC – they come out on Wednesdays, and

Anu Day & Margaret McGill

they contain important information about up-coming events Events like the October Com-modore’s Breakfast on the October 9th, the work party to prepare the club for Wurstfest on October 15th, the “Crafty Sailor” market and dinner on October 22nd We are seek-ing artisans who want to show their work We could use help for all of these events! Let Margaret McGill or Anu Day know if you’re interested or if you know someone who is: Portcaptain@lcycnet

Pretty soon all efforts will be geared toward the success of the annual 2-weekend Wurst-

fest Regatta No Commodore’s Breakfast or other social activities during the month of November

See you on the water or at the club, Margaret McGill & Anu Day

JUNIOR SAILING Sylvie Mathis

_/) Junior Keelboat Program

On January 2007, the US Department of Transportation and the US Coast Guard made a very bold decision The subject was Junior Big Boat Sailing Program It provided and enforcement guidance to permit US Sailing to allow US Sailing Instructors/Coaches to provide a Junior Big Boat Sailing Program (Policy letter 6711/46USC2101 – CG-3PCV Policy Letter 07-01, MB

Karr, CAPT – COMDT (CG-3PCV), (a) Tittle 46, USC, 2101, (b) NVIC

7-94, Guidance on the Passenger Vessel Safety Act of 1993, (c) Vol II,

Marine Safety Manual)

Many considerations were spelled out but they are manageable For the State of Texas, we need to add to the rule the Texas Boater Education The Texas Park and Wildlife Law and Regulations say that “if you are born on or after September 1st, 1993, and will be op-erating a boat over 15 horse power, a PWC, or a sailboat over 14 feet long in Texas,” that you must pass the test before operating such a sailboat

US Sailing created the Junior Big Boat Pro-gram that we will be using here at LCYC for the first time next summer under the Junior Sailing Program - Junior Keelboat For the first

year we are looking only at the basics, giving the opportunity for teens to sail with one of the LCYC – US Sailing Instructors This program will allow student-sailors to learn the ropes, overboard rescue, wing-and-wing, heaving to, reading the winds and, by giving them new challenge the pleasure of sailing but mostly seamanship and teamwork

The Junior Keelboat Program will be offered only to student-sailors that have graduated from any of the LCYC – Intermediate/Ad-vanced—or an US Sailing equivalent—session of the current Junior Sailing Program (2014-2017) Junior student-sailors must be between the ages of 13 and 17

The introduction to Junior Keelboat is de-signed to create sailing crew capable of return-ing a sailboat to the marina under sail Who knows, we may have a Junior Keelboat Racing Team soon?

_/) Sailing Instructors Needed!

The Junior Sailing Program is growing and we need more knowledgeable volunteer- sailors so that we are able to continue improving and

We are looking for member interested in be-coming LCYC Sailing Instructors No teaching sailing experience is required Junior Sailing Instructors will mainly teach intermediate/advanced and the basic of racing level classes The ideal candidates are flexible, able to multi-task and strive to be a role models and men-tors This is a fun, rewarding and challenging adventure that you will learn to love
