"Do you not find," he said, "that with your short sight it is a little trying to do so much typewriting?"

"I did at first," she answered, "but now I know where the letters are without looking." Then, suddenly realising the fuli meaning of his words, she madę a sudden movement, and looked up with fear and astonishment at his broad, good-humoured face. "You heard about me, Mr. Holmes," she cried, "else how could you know all that?"

"Never mind," said Holmes, laughing, "it is my business to know things. Perhaps I have trained myself to see what others overlook. If not, why should you come to consult me?"

"I came to you, sir, because I heard of you from Mrs. Etherege, whose husband you found so easily when the police and everyone had given him up for dead. Oh, Mr. Holmes, I wish you would do as much for me. Fm not rich, but still I have a hundred a year in my own right, besides the little that I make by the machinę, and I would give it all to know what has become of Mr. Hosmer Angel."

"Why did you come away to consult me in such a hurry?" asked Sherlock Holmes, with his finger-tips together, and his eyes to the ceiling.

Again, a surprised look came over the face of Miss Mary Sutherland. "Yes, I did rush out of the house," she said, "for it madę me angry to see the easy way in which Mr. Windibank - that is, my father - took it all. He would not go to the police, and he would do nothing, and kept on saying that there was no harm done, it madę me mad, and I just came right away to you."

"Your father?" said Holmes. "Your stepfather, surely, sińce the name is different?"

"Yes, my stepfather. I cali him father, though it sounds funny, too, for he is only five years and two months older than myself."

"And your mother is alive?"

"Oh, yes, mother is alive and well. I wasn't best pleased, Mr. Holmes, when she married again so soon after father's death, and a man who was nearly fifteen years younger than hterself. Father was a plumber in the Tottenham Court Road, and he left a tidy business behind him, which mother carried on, but when Mr. Windibank came he madę her sell the business. They got four thousand seven hundred, which wasn't nearly as much as father could have got if he had been alive."

THESECRETOF CAPOEIRA

Some have said it is one of the most amazing sports you can evertake part in: capoeira (pronounced "cap-wearer") - a unique mixture of martial arts, musie, acrobatics and dance. I decided to find out morę about this latest craze.

'Capoeira is unlike any other martial art', says James Chester, a capoeira instructor from Leeds. The opponents do not seek confrontation and all the movements are done in such a way that the fighters do not in fact hit each other,' he adds. Yet, despite the lack ofdirect physical contact and the limited risk ofinjury, the sport is one of the most spectacular to watch. A dance-like combination of rhythmic kicks, punches, acrobatic jumps and spins gives it an aura of mystical ritual. A ritual that has its roots in the sporfs history. Created in the seventeenth century by African s!aves brought to Brazil, capoeira was a form of combat that was intentionally madę to look like dance. This is because practising any form of martial arts was strictiy forbidden by the country's authorities. Severe punishment was given to those who were caught practising capoeira. The ban did not, however, discourage the slaves from cultivating their ritual dance. To African slaves, capoeira was much morę than just a self-defence technique or pure dance. By dancing, they demonstrated their own cultural identity and were able to forget about their misery. It was only in the 1930s that capoeira was allowed again, this time enjoying popularity among the highest classes of society. Soon, the first capoeira schools were opened. In the 1970s capoeira reached the United States and then arrived in Europę. Now it enjoys tremendous popularity among both teenagers and adults alike.

The great thing about capoeira is that you don't need to be super-fit to learn it. You build up your flexibility and strength gradually provided you train regularly,'says Chester. Needless to say, I gave it a try. Despite sweating heavily all the way through and my initial (but only initial!) problems with mastering the basie step called ginga, I must say I greatly enjoyed the class - as much for the work-outitselfas for the musie.

Without musie, there would be no capoeira. As I learned, the essence of capoeira is the rhythm that is being played on a special string instrument called the Berimbau. It sets the pace for the participants who gather in a circle called the roda (pronounced "hodder"), clap their hands and sing along to the musie while pairs of opjfeonents move to the rhythm and take turns to perform ritual sparring in the centrę of the circle.

Although it can take years to become a master of capoeira, you do not have to be an expert to enjoy a capoeira class. Treat it as a fun, thorough workout, during which you can both strengthen your muscles and improve co-ordination. There is also some good news for those who do not like individual sports: in capoeira, you are constantly interacting with the other participants. An enjoyable, healthy and social form of entertainment. No wonder so many peopleareintoit.
