ADDITIONALLY PAINTED PORTRAITS OF RULERS IN GRAANICA

Among figures of the Serbian King Uro as a monk and his wife Helene dAnjou as a nun on the eastern wall of Graanica narthex, there were portraits of two rulers, additionally painted. The fact that those diminished portraits of rulers were of a later date than those of monks is clearly indicated by the sequence of painting as well as by compositional char-acteristics of the entire representation. Regarding the additionally painted portraits, mainly the basic drawing has been preserved. However, since nimbuses and elements of costume were painted ocher, while nimbuses were also circled in brown, we could conclude that the mentioned figures of rulers in Graanica were completely painted before. It seems that most of the pigment, applied al seco, later fell off. Judging by the manner in which the considered portraits were inserted into the original composition, and also, according to physiognomy characteristics of the persons depicted, the appearance of their rulers insignia (semi-spher-ical crowns, sakoi, loroi, etc.) and well known historical facts, both persons on the painting can be positively identified. They are King Stefan Uro III Deanski and his son, the Young King Duan. This identification of the additionally painted figures is also confirmed through comparison with the preserved portraits of Deanski and Duan. In that aspect, the Serbian icon from the Cathedral of Bari is especially interesting. Figures of two rulers have been ad-ditionally painted in Graanica, same as in Hilandar, after the coronation of Stefan Deanski and Duan on January 6th, 1322, and before September 8th 1331. They have been created as a result of an intention to associate images of the new rulers with other dynastic depic-tions in the narthex of Graanica. Consequently, the iconographical program of the narthex shows as legitimate the ascencion to power of Deanski and his fellow ruler. The portratits of Duan and his father were consciously omitted from the original program of Graanica and Hilandar as a result of the well known conflict between Stefan Deanski and the King Milutin in 1314.
