Hyogo Prefectural Homeland for the Oriental White Stork This facility performs research and breeding programs related to the oriental white stork. Visitors can learn about efforts to return these birds to the wild in the Konotori Bunkakan (Oriental White Stork Museum) located within the grounds of this facility.
The oriental white stork, which in Japan can only be found in Toyooka, is a symbol of a society in which nature and people coexist. White storks became extinct in the wild in 1971. However, through protection, breeding programs, and environmental improvements, white storks took to the skies once again in 2005.
“Kaze” is a Chinese character used to represent wind, but it is also used in the word “fuuryuu” which means “to possess an atmosphere, taste, aura”, etc. Take some time to enjoy the scenery that many poets and artists captured in their works when they visited Toyooka.
“Kachoufuugetsu” ( ka[花 hana] = flower, chou [鳥 tori] = bird, fuu[風 kaze]= wind, getsu [月 tsuki] = moon) is a four Chinese character idiom that refers to the beauty of nature and also to the enjoyment of aesthetic objects and recreations such as paintings and poetry etc, which involve natural themes. This phrase evokes feelings of longing, affinity, awe, and respect with regard to nature. Toyooka’s residents possess a love for all the seasonal variations of nature, and it is with this kind of open heartedness that they welcome visitors to this area.
