Industry Term Definitions: Stick Diagram Drawing of a utility pole that shows the height of pole, every attachment on the pole, the amount of space
(inches or feet) between each attachment and where the new utility will attach.
Right of Way Permission given to an entity allowing them to place a utility underground, along a street, road or highway.
Application Drawings of utility poles given to the utility companies that show where existing and new utilities will be placed
on the pole. Each Application consists of approximately 100 poles.
Ride Out Visual inspection of every pole in an Application with representatives of the Phone, Power and Cable TV
companies.
Make Ready The cost a utility company charges to relocate their cables in order to allow another attachment to be made to an
existing pole.
Segment An area of proposed underground excavation consisting of approximately 3.5 miles in distance.
Dark Fiber Industry term for fiber optic cable that is installed but is not being utilized.
Light Industry term for making newly installed fiber active with network traffic.
