  • Founded in 1991 by Low Mei Yoke and Tan Chong Poh, Frontier Danceland is a non-profit contemporary dance repertory company in Singapore. The company turned full-time in 2011 and over the years has become known for combining dynamic Western dance technique with the strength and beauty of Asian expression. Inspired by the energy and the vibrancy of contemporary life in Singapore, the Company challenges itself to create and perform innovative and evocative works that push choreographic and performance boundaries.

At the core of Frontier Danceland is an unwavering love for dance and a strong commitment to raising the level and appreciation for contemporary dance in Singapore. The company is focused on creating bold, diverse and distinctive dance works, and has worked with numerous local and international dance-makers from a wide range of backgrounds and influences.

    About Frontier Danceland/

  • Festival Dance in the City29 August – 1 September 2019Belgium/ Germany

What started as an experimental platform for young artists to create innovative choreographies has evolved into a fixture in Frontier Danceland’s annual season. Dancers' Locker grew out of a desire to give our company artists an opportunity to take on the role of choreographer and creator, providing them with a space to explore new ideas, take risks and express themselves in a different capacity.

Dancers' Locker 2019 will be a double-bill presenting original work by company artists/ emerging choreographers Keigo Nozaki (Japan) and Ma Yueru (Singapore). Their pieces will straddle the line between movement and visual art. Audiences will be immersed in the creative process instead of being removed observers.

  • Artistic Director’sMessage

Thank you for joining us at Dancers' Locker 2019. This platform gives us an opportunity to celebrate the choreographic talents of Frontier Danceland's company artists. This year, we are proud to present a double bill with original pieces choreographed by Keigo Nozaki (Japan) and Ma Yueru (Singapore).

Developing a site-specific work presents many possibilities for experimentation and creativity, but can also be a challenge. The choreographers have gone a step further, melding contemporary dance with elements of visual art. The process has not been easy but they have all shown incredible tenacity and dedication.

I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to our sponsors for their support. In particular, I would like to recognize the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre for their sponsorship of this beautiful space; SPH Foundation and SPH Foundation Arts Fund for enabling us to share these performances with a wider audience, and the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple.

I wish you all a most enjoyable evening!

SynopsisInspired by movements of clay on the pottery wheel, ‘Endless Fragments of Time’ explores ideas of molding and being molded, the imprints that people and history leave on each other and their capacity to be reshaped. Through the work, Yue Ru hopes to create a space for the audience to immerse themselves solely in the moments of time unfolding before them.

  • MA YUERU was born in Singapore and trained at Singapore Ballet Academy and School of the Arts Singapore. She later graduated summa cum laude from The Boston Conservatory, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance while on The Boston Conservatory and Anne Cuervo-Philip Pionelli scholarships.

She has worked professionally in the United States and Spain as a company member of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago 2, Post:Ballet, The Move Messenger(s), Present-Day Dance Theater and Danza Organica, among others, and as a guest dancer at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.

She is very grateful to be back home performing for her family and friends after some years away, and strives to always be sincere, curious and courageous as an artist.
