About the Conference

Join us for the rst big regional conference that is jointly or-ganized by EAGE and FESM (Formation Evaluation Society of Malaysia), the local chapter of SPWLA. It is being held in the beautiful city of Kuala Lumpur, where local and international professionals will come together for a truly interdisciplinary event.

We are expecting papers that span ‘From Nano Pores to Mega Structures’, with a avor of how we work as subsurface profes-sionals in joint workows. The conference will include social events that will bring together elements of traditional Malay culture and some of the more rened aspects of what Kuala Lumpur has to offer.

Since PGCE will not be held in 2014, this conference will be a great opportunity for all geoscience colleagues to showcase their work in February 2014.

Venue

The venue will be the state-of-the-art Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, in the heart of the capital and conveniently located within a short stroll to many hotels. www.klccconventioncentre.com

Social Programme

Malaysian Philharmonic OrchestraThe World of Gustav Mahler Mahler’s First Sunday 16 February, 15:00 hrs

Conductor: Claus Peter Flor Piano: Till Fellner

Mozart Piano Concerto No.22Mahler Symphony No.1

Mozart and Mahler make a perfect pair on symphony pro-grammes. Both enjoyed their greatest acclaim and nancial success in Vienna, Mozart in the 1780s, Mahler a little more than a century later. If there is one genre in which Mozart ex-celled consistently above all others, it is the piano concerto. Nearly every work is a masterpiece. For Mahler, it was the sym-phony. This concert offers a prime example of each. Austrian pianist Till Fellner makes his long-awaited MPO debut.

Icebreaker ReceptionSunday 16 February, 18:00 – 20:00 hrsVenue: Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Level 3, West Wing foyer (exhibition area)

The welcome cocktail is an excellent way to kick off the week. Catch up with acquaintances and peers while enjoying deli-cious food and drinks in an informal setting.

Conference DinnerMonday 17 February, 19:00 – 22:00 hrsVenue: Saloma Bistro

The Conference Dinner provides the opportunity to enjoy an evening of Malaysian hospitality and cultural entertain-ment.

Short Courses, Site Visit and Field Trip

The conference will offer short courses, a site visit and eld trip, scheduled to start on Wednesday 19 February. Both the site visit and eld trip are limited to a maximum of 20 partici-pants in order to foster an interactive setting.

Short Courses

Rock Physics for Quantitative Seismic InterpretationInstructor: Dr Mark Sams (IKON Science)Wednesday 19 February, 9:00 – 17:00 hrs

Course descriptionRock physics provides the link between measurements of elastic properties, from

seismic and borehole data and the properties of rocks that are of importance to the exploration for and development of hydrocarbon resources. Rock physics also provides the frame-work for integrating a variety of data measured at different scales. A basic understanding of rock physics is essential for those involved in seismic reservoir characterization. This course

EAGE/FESM Joint Regional Conference4

provides an introduction to the basic knowledge of rock phys-ics and the rock physics tools and workows employed for quantitative seismic interpretation.

Sponsored by:

Core Analysis: A Best Practice GuideInstructor: Colin McPhee (Senergy)Wednesday 19 February, 9:00 – 17:00 hrs

Course descriptionCore analysis provides the only direct and quantitative measurement of the intact reservoir properties and should provide

the foundation for formation evaluation. Too frequently core analysis planning and programme design are done poorly and the results are often confusing or contradictory. It is conserva-tively estimated that 70% of special core analysis (SCAL) data are unt for purpose due to poor data quality or inadequate programme design.

This industry-leading, fully independent one-day training course will provide participants with an overview of the best practice acquisition, evaluation and implementation of rou-tine (RCA) and SCAL data from the end user’s perspective. On completion, participants will be better placed to appreciate the importance of quality core analysis in integrated studies.

Sponsored by:

Young Professionals course: Imaging Log InterpretationInstructor: Hon. Prof. Peter LloydWednesday 19 February, 9:00 – 17:00 hrs

Course descriptionThe course has been designed for geosci-entists, engineers and other technical staff

who wish to analyze and integrate image log and dip data to enhance their understanding of exploration plays and eld de-velopment. It leans heavily on worked class examples and case studies. Instead of interpreting image and dip data in isolation, the course shows how they can be used in conjunction with cores, other logs, modern depositional analogs, outcrop studies and hi-resolution seismic data to rene reservoir models.

Site Visit

PETRONAS Core Warehouse VisitWednesday 19 February, 9:00 – 13:00 hrs

Facilitator: Dr Budi Kantaatmadja (PETRONAS PMU)

Description‘Touch the Rock’: A rare and unique opportunity to view some of the best examples of type environments from the region.

Field Trip

Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) Field TripStart: Wednesday 19 FebruaryEnds: Friday 21 February

Facilitator: Dr Ralph Kugler (University of Malaya)

DescriptionThis two-day eld trip (departing KL for Miri the evening be-fore the start of the trip) will involve localities in Miri, the Lambir Hills and Niah Caves National Park that are analogous to aspects of offshore clastic and carbonate reservoirs in the Baram Delta and Luconia Provinces. Aspects of sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, and structure relative to petrophysics will be discussed in the area where the Malaysian petroleum industry began.
