TONGUES OF FIRE DESCENDED UPON THEMToday’s solemnity of Pentecost celebrates the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus whenthe Holy Spirit descended as tongues of fire upon Mary, the apostles and the disciples. Pentecost, which comes from the Greek word for fiftieth, is the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to send us the Advocate and marks the end of Easter.

St. Luke tells us that “suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim” (Acts 2:2-5).

At the loud noise, a large crowd gathered “but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language” (Acts 2:6). Some thought that the disciples had drunk too much wine, even though it was still morning. So, Peter stood up and gave his first homily, boldly speaking about the death and resurrection of Jesus and the gift of the Holy Spirit. As a result, about 3,000 people were baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Did You Know? There are eight traditional symbols of the Holy Spirit:

water, anointing, fire, cloud and light, the seal, the hand, the finger and the dove. Each symbol has a different theological significance and is used in sacred art to

represent different actions of the Holy Spirit, who is more difficult to depict than God the Father and God the Son.

Stewardship and the Holy Spirit

St. Paul teaches us that “to each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some

benefit” (1 Cor 12:7). How do you develop and share your unique God-given gifts to serve others?

FOR REFLECTION• The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding,

knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety and fear of the Lord. Which gifts are most visible in your life and which would you like to receive more fully?

• Reflect on St. Paul’s words: “You did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, ‘Abba, Father!’” (Romans 8:15).

• “The Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings” (Romans 8:26). How have you experienced this in your life?

STIRRED INTO FLAMEWhen we celebrate Christian holy days, we never merely commemorate what happened a long time ago. At baptism, original sin was washed away, and we became living temples of the Holy Spirit – members of the Body of Christ, commissioned to be Christ’s witnesses. The sacrament of confirmation roots us more deeply in the life of the Trinity, increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us and gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to share the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ.

Let us celebrate today’s feast of Pentecost as the anniversary of our own receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit at our baptism and confirmation. Through a life of prayer and service to others, may we too “stir into flame the gift of God” who dwells in us (2 Timothy 1:6).

LENGUAS DE FUEGO DESCENDIERON SOBRE ELLOSHoy se celebra el quincuagésimo día del Tiempo de Pascua por medio del Pentecostés, la culminación solemne de la Pascua cuando el Espíritu Santo descendió como lenguas de fuego sobre María, los apóstoles y los discípulos. Pentecostés, del griego para la palabra quincuagésimo, es como Jesús cumplió con la promesa de mandarnos un defensor y también marca el fin de la Pascua.

San Lucas nos dice: “De repente vino del cielo un ruido como el de una ráfaga de viento impetuoso que llenó toda la casa donde estaban sentados, y se les aparecieron lenguas como de fuego que, repartiéndose, se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos. Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu les daba habilidad para expresarse” (Hechos 2:2-4).

Al ocurrir el estruendo, se juntó una multitud, “y estaban desconcertados porque cada uno los oía hablar en su propia lengua” (Hechos 2:6). Algunos pensaron que los discípulos habían tomado demasiado vino, aunque aún era temprano. Entonces Pedro se levantó y dio su primera homilía y hablo con confianza sobre la muerte, la resurrección de Cristo, y el regalo del Espíritu Santo. Ese día unas 3,000 personas fueron bautizadas y se les llenó con el Espíritu Santo.

¿Lo Sabías?Tradicionalmente hay ocho símbolos del Espíritu Santo: el agua, la unción, el fuego, nube y luz, el sello, la mano,

La corresponsabilidad y el Espíritu Santo

San Pablo nos enseña que “a cada uno se le da la manifestación del Espíritu para el bien común”

(1 Cor 12:7). ¿Como desarrolla y comparte los regalos de Dios con otros?

PARA REFLEXIONAR• Los siete regalos del Espíritu Santo son sabiduría, entendimiento,

conocimiento, consejería, fortaleza, devoción, y temor al Señor. ¿Cuáles regalos son visibles en su vida, y cuales le gustaría recibir más a lleno?

• Reflexione sobre las palabras de San Pablo: “Pues no habéis recibido un espíritu de esclavitud para volver otra vez al temor, sino que habéis recibido un espíritu de adopción como hijos, por el cual clamamos: ¡Abba, Padre!” (Romanos 8:15).

• “Y de la misma manera, también el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad; porque no sabemos orar como debiéramos, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles” (Romanos 8:26). ¿Como ha vivido esta experiencia en su vida?

• ¿Porque es que Pentecostés se considera el cumpleaños de la iglesia?

AVIVADOS CON EL ESPÍRITU SANTOCuando celebramos días santos, no solamente recordamos lo que pasó hace mucho tiempo. Vivimos una vez más las realidades que sucedieron en ese día, y recibimos de nuevo la gracia de Dios. El regalo y el milagro de Pentecostés lo vivimos en nuestro bautismo y nuestra confirmación.

En nuestro bautismo, el pecado original fue lavado, y nos convertimos en templos del Espíritu Santo—miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, llamados a ser testigos de Cristo. El sacramento de la confirmación nos une a la Trinidad, aumenta los regalos del Espíritu Santo y nos da fortaleza para compartir la fe en palabra y hecho, como testigos verdaderos de Cristo.

Hay que celebrar el Pentecostés como el aniversario de nuestro propio bautizo y confirmación. Por medio de una vida de oración y servicio a otros, que también nosotros avivemos el fuego del don de Dios que vive dentro de nuestro ser.
