The Declaration of Independence

• Drafted by Thomas Jefferson between June 11 and June 28, 1776, the Declaration of Independence is at once the nation's most cherished symbol of liberty and Jefferson's most enduring monument. Jefferson expressed the convictions in the minds and hearts of the American people. The political philosophy of the Declaration ideals of individual liberty had already been expressed by John Locke and the Continental philosophers. What Jefferson did was to summarize this philosophy in "self-evident truths" and set forth a list of grievances against the King in order to justify before the world the breaking of ties between the colonies and the mother country.

The Great Seal was carefully designed by the Founding Fathers to symbolize the United States – to the world and to the future. It is America's symbolic mission statement, created by the people who gave us our freedom.

Although the eagle side quickly became popular, the reverse side remained obscure until it appeared on the one-dollar bill in 1935. Consequently, the image of the pyramid and radiant eye is usually only associated with financial matters.

The Star-Spangled Banner• Flying above Fort McHenry at

Baltimore when the British attacked it on September 13, 1814. Francis Scott Key, a lawyer from Washington had gone aboard a British ship seeking the release of a friend held prisoner. He was detained throughout the night. The sight of the American flag still flying over the fortress the next morning inspired Key to write what, in 1931, became our National Anthem. The original Ft. McHenry flag is displayed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Its design, born with the second flag act on January 13, 1794, is the only one ever to have more than thirteen stripes.
