7) Book chapters: optimisation
Dear Colleagues, We have received many good proposals during the first round of our call for chapters. In this second round, we would like to focus particularly on the following areas:(1) novel algorithms for optimisation(2) optimisation in planning, scheduling and timetabling problems(3) the use of artificial immune systems in optimisationIf you are interested in this publication, please drop me a short reply at [email protected]. Best wishes,Raymond~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CALL FOR CHAPTERS==================Proposals Submission Deadline: 31 MAY 2008 (flexible)Full Chapters Due: 15 JULY 2008 (strict deadline) Nature-Inspired Algorithms for OptimisationA volume edited by Raymond Chiong To be published by Springer-Verlag in the series Studies in Computational Intelligence (SCI) Book Objectives & Mission:Nature has always been a source of inspiration. In recent years, new concepts, techniques and computational applications stimulated by nature are being continually proposed and exploited to solve a wide range of optimisation problems in diverse fields. Various kinds of nature-inspired algorithms have been designed and applied, and many of them are producing high quality solutions to a variety of real-world applications and optimisation problems, including scheduling, manufacturing, logistics, space allocation, stock cutting, anomaly detection, engineering design, software testing, bioinformatics and data mining, etc. The success of these algorithms has led to competitive advantages and cost savings not only to the industry but also the society at large. The use of nature-inspired algorithms stands out to be promising due to the fact that many real-world problems have become increasingly complex. The size and
complexity of the optimisation problems nowadays require the development of methods and solutions whose efficiency is measured by their ability to find acceptable results within a reasonable amount of time. Despite there is no guarantee of finding the optimal solution, approaches based on the influence of biology and life sciences such as evolutionary algorithms, neural networks, ant systems, swarm intelligence, artificial immune systems, and many others have been shown to be highly practical and provided state-of-the-art solutions to various optimisation problems. The aim of this book is to provide a central source of reference by collecting and disseminating the progressive body of knowledge on nature-inspired algorithms and their applications. The main focus will be the implementation of novel nature-inspired solutions for optimisation based on empirical studies. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: Methods:-evolutionary algorithms-memetic algorithms-neural networks-artificial life-particle swarm optimisation-ant colony optimisation-artificial immune systems-membrane, molecular, cellular and DNA computing-tabu search, simulated annealing, etc-hybrid methods with metaheuristics, machine learning, game theory, mathematical programming, constraint programming, co-evolutionary learning, etc Applications:-evolutionary games-evolutionary economics-production, logistics and transportation-telecommunications and engineering design-planning, scheduling and timetabling-bioinformatics and data mining-grid computing and computer security-software testing and software self assembly-numerical and combinatorial optimisation-multi-objective optimisation, dynamic optimisation, problems with uncertainty, etc-integration of natural computing techniques in intelligent systems-optimisation strategies in robotics path planning, task allocation and coordination-optimisation and control of highly nonlinear, large scale or networked engineering-successful optimisations in the fields of business, science and engineering Submission Procedure:Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before May 31, 2008 a 1-2 page proposal to [email protected] clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified in 2-3 weeks time about the status of their proposals. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 15, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed
by at least three reviewers. About the series Studies in Computational Intelligence:The series Studies in Computational Intelligence (SCI) publishes new developments and advances in the various areas of computational intelligence - quickly and with a high quality. The intent is to cover the theory, applications, and design methods of computational intelligence, as embedded in the fields of engineering, computer science, physics and life science, as well as the methodologies behind them. The series contains monographs, lecture notes and edited volumes in computational intelligence spanning the areas of neural networks, connectionist systems, genetic algorithms, evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, cellular automata, self-organising systems, soft computing, fuzzy systems, and hybrid intelligent systems. Critical to both contributors and readers are the short publication time and world-wide distribution - this permits a rapid and broad dissemination of research results. 8) Book Chapters: Learning
CALL FOR CHAPTERSProposals Submission Deadline: 15 June 2008Full Chapters Due: 30 July 2008Learning and Approximation: Theoretical Foundations and Applications A Springer book edited by Ajith Abraham, Aboul-Ella Hassanien, and Athanasios Vasilakoshttp://www.cba.edu.kw/abo/FCI-AboAjith/foundciLA.htmlIntroduction Approximation and Learning algorithms are fundamental tools that deal with computationally hard problems and problems in which the input is gradually disclosed over time. Both kinds of problems have a large number of applications arising from a variety of fields, such as algorithmic game theory, approximation classes, coloring and partitioning, competitive analysis, computational finance, cuts and connectivity, geometric problems, inapproximability results,
mechanism design, network design, packing and covering, paradigms for design and analysis of approximation and online algorithms, randomization techniques, real-world applications, and scheduling problems. The past years have witnessed a large number of interesting applications of various computational intelligence techniques, such as rough sets, Neural Networks; Fuzzy Logic; Evolutionary Computing; Artificial Immune Systems; Swarm Intelligence; Reinforcement Learning and evolutionary computation, to intelligent multimedia processing. In spite of numerous successful applications of computational intelligence techniques in business and industry, it is sometimes difficult to explain from a theoretical perspective. Therefore, we encourage authors to present original chapter dealing with the incorporation of such CI techniques into Learning and Approximation algorithms and processes. 11) DASIP 2008
Conference on Design and Architecturesfor Signal and Image Processing
DASIP 2008 Paper submission extended deadline: May 30, 2008Special session paper submission deadline: June 16, 2008 http://www.ecsi.org/dasip Université Libre de Bruxelles, BelgiumNovember 24-26, 2008
DASIP Conference is sponsored by ECSI, EURASIP and Universite Libre de Bruxelles and technically co-sponsored by IEEE Benelux Section and IEEE France Section
Call for Papers
The development of complex applications involving signal, image and control processing, is classically divided into three consecutive steps: a theoretical study of the algorithms, a study of the target architecture, and finally the implementation. Such a linear design flow is reaching its limits due to the intense pressure on design cycle and strict performance constraints. The approach, called Algorithm-Architecture-Matching, aims to leverage the design flow by a simultaneous study of both algorithmic and architectural issues, taking into account multiple design constraints, as well as algorithm and architecture optimizations.
Introducing new design methodologies is necessary when facing the new emerging applications as for example advanced mobile communication systems or smart sensors based systems. This forms a driving force for the future evolutions of embedded system designs methodologies.
The research community in Europe addressing these issues is very active both in academy and industry. The goals of this Conference are to present the latest results in the domain of design and architecture for signal and image processing and to initiate a regular meeting of European researchers addressing this topic.
The DASIP Conference will give the opportunity for researchers to exchange the ideas and to build the collaboration on emerging topics and technologies. It also aims to strength the links between the European Information Society Technologies (IST) priorities and the researchers in the domain of design and architecture for signal and image processing.
The DASIP Conference results from the success for more than ten years of the French workshop on Algorithm-Architecture-Matching. The first edition called "Workshop on Algorithm Architecture Adequation" was held in Lannion in 1992 (AAA 1992). During eight years a two-year event was organized, AAA 1994 in Grenoble, AAA 1996 in Toulouse, AAA 1998 in Saclay and AAA 2000 in Rocquencourt. In 2002 thanks to its widespread success the workshop was extended to all francophone countries, JFAAA 2002 was held in Monastir and JFAAA 2005 in Dijon. In 2007 the workshop was extended to the Europe in order to reach a wider community. Each edition was a great success gathering more than one hundred of researchers from industry, academia and government organizations. DASIP 2008 will aim to promote and strengthen the links between European researchers further.

Special Session 1
Organizers: Yves SOREL, National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA), France and Joël GOOSSENS, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium
Title: Resource Management Techniques for Real-time Operating Systems in a Co-Design Framework
The session is dedicated to original contributions about resource management techniques for real-time operating systems (RTOS) based on specific and realistic hardware devices in a co-design framework. More precisely, the session will consider research papers which contribute to the techniques (resources management, scheduling, worst case execution time (WCET) characterization, synchronization mechanisms, etc.) used at operating system level but based on realistic, accurate and pragmatic hardware issues. Examples of such hardware issues include but are not limited to: Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) technologies, multi-core architectures, low-power aware platforms, context-switch sensitive systems, caches memory devices, etc. Papers dealing with the fact that the different abstraction layers impact each other in those techniques are welcome. For further information please e-mail: [email protected] and [email protected]
Special Session 2
Organiser: Ahmet T. Erdogan, The University of Edinburgh, UK
Title: Systems and Architectures for Real-time Image Processing
Due to rapid advancements in integrated circuit technology, the rich theoretical results that have been developed by the image and video processing research community are now being increasingly applied in practical systems to solve real-world image and video processing problems. Examples of such systems are mobile phones, digital still/video/cell-phone cameras, portable media players, personal digital assistants, high-definition television, video surveillance systems, industrial visual inspection systems, medical imaging devices, vision-guided autonomous robots, and many other real-time embedded systems. In these real-time systems, strict timing requirements demand that results are available within a certain interval of time as imposed by the application. In addition to these strict timing constraints, these systems also involve constraints such as area and power consumption. This special session brings together practitioners and researchers working in all aspects of real-time image and video processing. It will serve as a forum for exchange of novel ideas on corresponding hardware developments, software tools, system solutions, and all types of applications.
Topics of interest of this special session include, but are not be restricted to:
- Real-time image and video processing algorithms- Real-time embedded image and video processing systems- Real-time image and video processing architectures including dynamically reconfigurable architectures (both conventional FPGAs and custom reconfigurable architectures), parallel DSP systems and Media processors, application specific parallel architectures, parallel and distributed architectures - Real-time hardware/software co-design for image and video processing- Real-time image and video processing applications including HDTV, set-top boxes, mobile multimedia, smart cameras, machine vision, industrial inspection, surveillance and security, image and video compression for transmission and for database storage and retrieval, biomedical imaging, satellite image processing, etc.

Tom Fawcett (Stanford University)Bart Baesens (K.U.Leuven/University of Southampton) Scope-----Swarm Intelligence is a relatively new subfield of artificial intelligence which studies theemergent collective intelligence of groups of simple agents. It is based on the social insects’metaphor where a number of insects with limited capabilities are able to come to intelligentsolutions for complex problems. In recent decades the Swarm Intelligence paradigm hasreceived widespread attention in research, mainly as Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) andParticle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Successful applications of swarm intelligence includethe modelling of agent behaviour, such as the large numbers of fighting individuals in thebattle scenes of the Lord of the Rings movies, and various optimization problems, such asthe routing of packages through networks, the travelling salesman problem, scheduling, etc. This special issue focuses on the intersection of the swarm intelligence paradigm withMachine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Data. Special Session on "Metaheuristics and Real-World Problems"
Call for Papers===============
Solving real-world optimization problems faces metaheuristic algorithms to really challenging tasks, such as high computational requirements, hardly constrained, high dimensionality, etc. These challenges have to be addressed properly in order to provide this kind of problems with high quality solutions. Usually this means to extend or to create new operators, algorithms or implementations that are specifically targeted to be used in real time or big dimension problems. The sustained research effort over recent years succeeded to achieve many practical and theoretical results in the development and application of new techniques for solving real-world optimization problems. This special session is aimed at presenting and discussing on these latest advances in this interesting field or research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • Novel uses of metaheuristics in the real world • Low cost, real time, efficient algorithms • Extensions of existing metaheuristics to tackle real-world problems• New real-world problems solved with metaheuristics• Large scale problem solving• Rigorous comparisons across techniques in real-world problems• Surveys of applications• Parallel and grid computing approaches for real-world problem solving

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Session on: Meta-Heuristics for Security, Reliability and Trust
In META'08 International Conference on Metaheuristics and Nature Inspired Computing Hammamet, Tunisia 29, 30 & 31 October 2008
http://www2.lifl.fr/META08/
============================================================================
Dear Colleagues,
In the context of the International Conference on Metaheuristics and Nature Inspired Computing, we organize a special session entitled "Meta-Heuristics for Security, Reliability and Trust".
SESSION DESCRIPTION
The increasing complexity of recent systems and networks has raised new concerns in terms of security, reliability and trust. Indeed, the past few years have seen a significant increase in cyber attacks on the Internet, resulting in degraded confidence and trusts in the use of Internet and computer systems. The same way, there is an increasing demand for measures to guarantee the privacy, integrity, and availability of resources in distributed systems, such as Grid and P2P systems.
These new problematics require dependable systems and networks which can intelligently react to abnormal situations and ensure the security, reliability, quality and trustworthiness of the information. Meta-heuristics provide a way to develop such techniques, algorithms, protocols and tools in the different aspects such as authentication, access control, availability, integrity, privacy, confidentiality and non-repudiation as they apply to both networks and systems.
This special session convene researchers in the areas of security, reliability, trust and meta-heuristics. We seek to collect the most recent advances in metaheuristics (genetic algorithms, ant colony algorithms, particle swarm optimization, etc.) which are applied to security, reliability and trust.
Both theoretical papers and papers describing practical experiences will be welcome.
Topics include but are not limited to:
Security, Reliability and Trust | Meta-heuristics----------------------------------------------------------------------------Intrusion detection | Genetic AlgorithmsCryptography, Cryptanalysis | Genetic ProgrammingSecurity protocols | Evolution StrategiesQuality of Services | Evolutionary ProgrammingTrust Management | Simulated AnnealingSoftware Validation and Verification | Tabu Search

IMPORTANT DATES*****************
Paper submission: May 31, 2008Notification: June 15, 2008Camera-Ready: July 15, 2008Conference: Sept 22-23, 2008
SCOPE*******
Wireless ad hoc networks are communication networks that consist entirely ofwireless nodes, placed together in an ad hoc manner, i.e. with minimalplanning. Nodes can enter or leave the network at any time, and may be mobile,so that the network topology continuously experiences alterations duringdeployment.
Wireless ad hoc networks pose substantially different challenges compared tomore traditional communication networks: they are highly dynamic, have limitedresources (in terms of bandwidth, computation power, battery, etc.), have ahighly decentralized organization, rely on often unreliable wirelesscommunication channels, etc. As a consequence, new algorithms and protocols are
needed for all aspects of the organization of these networks. SwarmIntelligence methods seem particularly interesting in this context. This isbecause their ability to solve difficult tasks in a distributed and robust wayusing locally interacting simple agents fits closely to the typical environmentcreated by an ad hoc network.
In this special session, we solicit novel and interesting contributions in thisarea, with special reference to applications of Swarm Intelligence in thedomain of:
- Mobile ad hoc networks- Sensor networks- Networks of mobile robots
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Distributed medium access control using Swarm Intelligence
- Swarm Intelligence routing protocols in ad hoc networks
- Swarm Intelligence transport layer protocols in ad hoc networks
- Swarm Intelligence for QoS provisioning
- Self-configuration, self-optimization and self-adaptation through swarm intelligence
- Off-line optimization for ad hoc networks through swarm intelligence
- Comparisons between Swarm Intelligence and other algorithms for ad hoc networks
- Implementation of Swarm Intelligence approaches in testbeds
- Evaluation of Swarm Intelligence approaches in real-world settings

LPAR'08 15th International Conference on Logic for Programming, Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning
November 23-27, 2008
Carnegie Mellon University Doha, Qatar
http://www.qatar.cmu.edu/lpar08
---------------------------- SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED ----------------------------
The series of International Conferences on Logic for Programming, ArtificialIntelligence and Reasoning (LPAR) is a forum where, year after year, some ofthe most renowned researchers in the areas of automated reasoning, computational logic, programming languages and their applications come topresent cutting-edge results, to discuss advances in these fields, and toexchange ideas in a scientifically emerging part of the world. The 2008edition will be held in Doha, Qatar, on the premises of the Qatar campus ofCarnegie Mellon University.
Logic is a fundamental organizing principle in nearly all areas in ComputerScience. It runs a multifaceted gamut from the foundational to the applied. Atone extreme, it underlies computability and complexity theory and the formalsemantics of programming languages. At the other, it drives billions of gatesevery day in the digital circuits of processors of all kinds. Logic is initself a powerful programming paradigm but it is also the quintessentialspecification language for anything ranging from real-time critical systems to
networked infrastructures. It is logical techniques that link implementationand specification through formal methods such as automated theorem proving andmodel checking. Logic is also the stuff of knowledge representation andartificial intelligence. Because of its ubiquity, logic has acquired a centralrole in Computer Science education.
New results in the fields of computational logic and applications arewelcome. Also welcome are more exploratory presentations, which may examineopen questions and raise fundamental concerns about existing theories andpractices. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Automated reasoning * Logic of distributed systems * Computional interpretations of logic * Logic programming * Constraint programming * Modal and temporal logics * Constructive logic and type theory * Model checking * Decision procedures * Non-monotonic reasoning * Description logics * Ontologies * Foundations of security * Program and system verification * Implementations of logic * Proof assistants * Interactive theorem proving * Proof-carrying code * Knowledge representation and reasoning * Proof planning * Lambda calculus * Proof theory * Logic and automata * Propositional satisfiability * Logic and computational complexity * Reasoning about actions * Logic and databases * Rewriting and unification * Logic and games * Satisfiability modulo theories * Logic for the semantic web * Static analysis of programs * Logical aspects of concurrency * Specification using logics * Logical foundations of programming * Translation validation * Logic in artificial intelligence

3. CFP: LaSh08 - WORKSHOP ON LOGIC AND SEARCH
http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dtai/LaSh08(DEADLINE: 15:08:2008)
LaSh08 - WORKSHOP ON LOGIC AND SEARCH Computation of structures from declarative descriptions
Second Call For Papers
Leuven, Belgium, November 6-7, 2008
http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dtai/LaSh08
................................................................
IMPORTANT DATES:
Submission: August 15, 2008Notification: September 15, 2008Workshop: November 6-7, 2008
SCOPE:
In many real-life problems, we search for objects of complex nature --plans, schedules, assignments. Such objects are often represented as(finite) structures, which are implicitly specified by means oftheories in some logic. Thus, languages are needed to describestructures, and algorithms to extract them from these implicitdescriptions. Propositional Satisfiability (SAT), ConstraintProgramming (CP), and Answer Set Programming (ASP) are arguably thethree most prominent areas that develop such languages and techniques.
Each of these areas has been proposed as a declarative programmingapproach to solving NP-complete combinatorial problems. Such problemsabound in computer science, engineering, operations researchcomputational biology and other fields. In many cases, progress islimited by the difficulty of designing implicit representations ofstructures (modeling), which hinders common acceptance of the aproach, and the inability to solve sufficiently large instances of theproblems in practical time bounds (search algorithms). Therefore, these three areas have as a major goal the development of practicalmodeling languages and methodologies that support the modeling, andalgorithms and tools for efficient problem solving.
Despite the similar goals of these areas, in many respects SAT, ASP andCP develop as three independent disciplines, focusing on rather differentparticular problems or questions. There are few, if any, researcherswho are experts in all three areas. To date, we are not aware of any
meeting which specifically aims at bringing these three areas together.
Objectives==========
LaSh08 aims to offer a discussion forum for research in SAT, ASP andCP that focuses on the computation of structures from declarativedescriptions. We invite contributions on modeling languages, methodologies, theoretical analysis, techniques, algorithms andsystems. The forum is an occasion to exchange ideas on thestate-of-the-art; to discuss specific technical problems; to formulatechallenges and opportunities ahead; to analyse differences andsimularities between the different areas; to study opportunities forsynergy and integration.
In particular, we would like to foster exchange at least on thefollowing topics:
-- integrations of SAT, ASP and/or CP technologies -- comparisons of modeling languages -- criteria for choice of modeling languages
(for modeling convenience or efficiency) -- new algorithm directions -- efficient modeling strategies -- new applications -- complexity results, tractable subsets -- completeness results (e.g. capturing complexity classes) -- methods for taking advantage of tractability results -- SAT modulo theories -- solver implementation techniques, -- algorithms for grounding -- modeling languages and constructs
(aggregates, global constraints,..) -- search control and heuristics in the context of model generation -- symmetry breaking in model construction -- optimisation problems in model construction: -- languages for optimality criteria; -- algorithms for computing optimal models
Systems and Tools:===================
LaSh08 will also provide an opportunity for presentation of implementedsystems and tools at a demo session. Thus, we invite submissions ofsystems and tools that reflect the above ideas, and aim at facilitatingdeclarative problem solving, and making it practical and used.
Workshop format:================
The workshops objective is to create an informal, stimulating
atmosphere for exchange of ideas. We invite also reports of work inprogress. There will be informal proceedings.

6. CFP: The First International Workshop on Video Mining (VM2008)
http://www4.comp.polyu.edu.hk/~csdct/Conference/VM2008/VM2008.html(DEADLINE: 01:08:2008)Call for Papers The First International Workshop on Video Mining (VM'08) Pisa, Italy, December 19, 2008 In conjunction with IEEE ICDM2008(http://www4.comp.polyu.edu.hk/~csdct/Conference/VM2008/VM2008.html)********************************************************************
With cameras become pervasive in our daily life, vast amounts of videos aregenerated in different aspects of our society every day. The popularity ofYouTube-like websites is one of strong evidences for this. How toeffectively analyze and use the already huge, rapidly growing video data isone of main challenges we are facing. Video processing and analysis
techniques become more and more important in the field of computer visionand image understanding and other related areas. There are wide-ragepotential video-based applications in many areas including multimedia, humancomputer interface, security and surveillance, copyright protection, personal entertainment, to name a few.
Video mining is to discover and describe interesting patterns in video data, which has become one of the core problem areas of the data mining researchcommunity. Compared to the mining of other types of data (e.g., text),video mining is still in its infancy, and an under-explored field. There aremany challenging research problems facing video mining. For example, how todiscover knowledge from spatial-temporal data, how to infer high-levelsemantic concepts from low-level features extracted from videos, how to makeuse of unlabeled data. Applying general data mining techniques for videodata will face a number of difficulties as well, because of the need toanalyze large amount of high-dimensional data. To address these challenges,we have to adapt the existing data mining theory or algorithm for video data,or find new techniques and approaches suitable for video data.
This one-day workshop seeks to present and highlight the latest developmentsin video data mining and video-based applications. It aims to bring togetherworldwide researchers from related disciplines, to provide a forum for thedissemination of significant research work and innovative practice, and toencourage exchanges, interactions and possible collaboration betweenparticipants.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to,------------------* Video clustering and categorization* Video based object recognition* Video segmentation and summarization* Video feature extraction and representation* Video indexing and retrieval* Video search engines* Video editing and browsing systems* Visual event and activity detection* Statistical techniques for video analysis* Semantic video content analysis* Video processing for HCI* Video surveillance (person identification, abnormal activity labeling ...)* Consumer video applications (sports highlight detection, commercial message extraction ...)

Computer Vision and Image Understanding Special Issue on 3D Representation for Object and Scene Recognition
Object and scene categorization has been a central topic of computer vision research in recent years. The problem is a highly challenging one. A single object or scene may show tremendous variability in appearance and structure under various photometric and geometric conditions. In addition, members of the same class may differ from each other due to various degrees of intra-class variability. Recently, researchers have proposed new powerful models and learning tools for handling categorization of objects and scenes. However, much work still needs to be done towards the goal of: i) finding a suitable representation that can efficiently capture the three-dimensional nature of objects and scenes; ii) taking advantage of this representation to help the recognition task. We are soliciting original contributions which can provide both theoretical and experimental insight on this fundamental problem. Specific questions we would like to address include, but are not limited, to:
. Representation:
.. What is a suitable representation for recognizing 3D object categories?
. Reconstruction and Recognition:
.. Can recognition and reconstruction be run simultaneously to enhance each other?.. How much does 3D information help? How detailed does the 3D representation need to be in order to achieve satisfactory recognition?
. Spatial constraints and contextual recognition:
.. How can we use/explore different degrees of 3D spatial constraints for recognition?.. Can we expand known 2D spatial models to 3D?.. How can 3D spatial constraints be used for joint recognition of scenes and the objects within?
. Human vision:
.. What can we learn from what we know about our own visual system? How do we represent a 3D object or environment in our brain? Can this inspire computational work?
