CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
AI-2008 is the Twenty-eighth SGAI International Conference on Innovative Techniques and Applications of Artificial Intelligence.
The scope of the conference comprises the whole range of AI technologies and application areas. AI-2008 reviews recent technicaladvances in AI technologies and shows how these advances have beenapplied to solve business problems. Key features of AI-2008 are:
- Papers will be published in book form by Spinger.
- The Technical Stream presents the best of recent developments in AI,covering a wide range of technical areas.
- The Application Stream is the largest annual showcase in Europe ofreal applications using AI technology.
- The best papers will be reprinted in a special issue of the international journal 'Knowledge Based Systems'.
- The Poster Session is a forum for disseminating new developments andlatest work in progress, especially suited to MSc and PhD students.
- Prizes for Best Paper in each stream and Best Poster.
- The programme also includes tutorials and workshops to providegreater depth in selected topics. (These are free to delegates of themain conference, but separate registration is also available.)
- The Machine Intelligence (MI) competition exhibits working systemsthat are a significant step towards machine intelligence.
- UK CBR13, the 13th UK CBR Workshop, will be co-located with AI-2008.
- The conference qualifies for the IEE and BCS CPD schemes.
- In addition to the formal sessions, the conference programme

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
Contributions are invited in the form of papers of up to fourteen A4pages presenting original work in AI. Contributions may be submittedto either of two streams for oral presentation, or a parallel postersession (six pages maximum).
Technical Stream
Areas of interest include (but are not restricted to): knowledgeengineering; semantic web; constraint satisfaction; intelligentagents; machine learning; model based reasoning; verification andvalidation of AI systems; natural language understanding;speech-enabled systems; case based reasoning; neural networks;genetic algorithms; data mining and knowledge discovery in databases;knowledge representation, inference and reasoning; robotics andpervasive computing; qualitative and temporal reasoning; knowledgemanagement; AI languages and environments; robotics and pervasivecomputing.
Application Stream
Case studies are welcomed describing the application of AI to real-world problems. Papers in recent years have covered all application domains, including commerce, manufacturing and government, and every major AI technique. In addition to case studiesand specific applications of AI, we would welcome papers that discussissues such as managing the transfer from research to production ofAI-based products. Papers are selected to highlight critical areas ofsuccess (and failure) and to present the benefits and lessons of valueto other developers. Submitted papers should make these points clear.Guidance notes for Application Stream authors are available from thewebsite.
Poster Session
The Poster Session is intended for the presentation of work whichmeets the high standards of AI-2008, but which is more topical andpreliminary than the work presented in the main two streams. It is anexcellent forum for disseminating new developments and latest work inprogress, especially suited to MSc and PhD students. Poster paperswill be printed as short papers (maximum 6 pages) in the proceedingsvolumes. Papers submitted to the Technical and Application streamswill automatically be considered as posters if they fall short of thestandard for oral presentation in full form.
Publication of Papers
Papers accepted for presentation at the conference will be publishedin book form by Springer.
- The books will be prepared from camera-ready copy supplied by theauthors of accepted papers.
- Formatting specifications for the proceedings have been provided bythe publisher and are available from the conference website.
- Authors will retain copyright in all papers published in the twovolumes of proceedings.
- The best six refereed papers in each stream will be reprinted as aspecial issue of the international journal Knowledge Based Systems.
Submission of Papers
Papers must be prepared in either Microsoft Word or Latex. Initialversions of papers should be submitted in PDF format only anduploaded to the conference website by SUNDAY JUNE 15th 2008 at thelatest. There are revised Word macro and Latex style files comparedwith previous years.
- At least one author of each accepted paper must register for andattend the conference to present it in person, for the paper to bepublished.
- Presenting authors will be asked to register for the conference atthe discounted speakers' rate when they return the final camera-readyprinted versions of their papers.
Tutorials & workshops
The Conference Committee invites proposals for tutorials and workshops to be presented on the first day of the conference. These should bedirected in the first instance to the Tutorial/Workshop Organiser.
Prizes
There are sponsored prizes (a trophy plus 500 pounds) for the bestpaper submitted in each stream and a trophy plus a cash prize for thebest poster, awarded on the basis of delegate voting.
Machine Intelligence Competition
A permanent trophy awarded for one year plus a 1,000 pounds cash prizewill be awarded to the winner of the annual machine intelligencecompetition. This prize will be awarded to the working system that isconsidered to be the most significant step forward towards MachineIntelligence on display at the competition.

Please note that the deadline for demo submissions to AIIDE-08 is next Tuesday, May 6. Prospective authors are required to register at the AIIDE-08 paper submission site at http://aaai.confmaster.net/pages/login.php?Conf=AIIDE. The software will assign a password, which will enable authors to log on to submit an abstract and paper.
AIIDE-08 invites researchers and practitioners to share insights and cutting-edge results from a wide range of topics and encourages the demonstration of a) research systems in the context of existing commercial games, b) new games authored by researchers, c) contributions demonstrating the adoption
and/or extension of AI research results published games, and d) completely new forms of interactive digital entertainment made possible by AI research. An electronic submission of a 2-page abstract and demonstration materials is required. Demonstration materials can take the form of a recorded demonstration session, an executable version of the demonstration with written instructions, or a detailed description of the demonstration heavily illustrated with screenshots. Please note that these materials are for review only; it is hoped that all demonstrations will be conducted live at AIIDE-08. Submissions will be judged on technical merit, accessibility to developers and researchers, originality, presentation, and significance. Demonstration abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings.

The School of Biology, Computation, and Information (BCI),reaching this year its fifth edition, aims at bringingtogether Teachers and Students in Biology, Mathematics,and Computer Science. The main goal of the School is togive an updated overview of interdisciplinary techniquesand problems cross-bordering the three fields.
This year's edition will be centered on (Re)Sequencingand Annotating Genomes, touching a field in which newtechnologies and old problems meet in a context callingfor an even higher level of interaction among the threedifferent disciplines at the core of the School.The three distinguished speakers for this year's editionare Michele Morgante (Biology), Alberto Apostolico(Computer Science), and Laxmi Parida (Mathematics) andthe school will take place during the second week ofSeptember (September 8-12, 2008).
During the school, on Tuesday September 9th, a one-dayworkshop will take place. It will be titled "New SequencingTechnologies". Excellence lecturers and technologicalrepresentatives will be invited and the participants to theSchool may submit an abstract leading to a twenty-minutepresentation during the workshop. The Seventh British Computer Society Machine Intelligence Competition
Wednesday December 10th 2008 at Peterhouse College, Cambridge, UK, during the annual SGAI conference AI-2008
Closing Date for Entries: October 1st 2008
This is the seventh in an annual series of competitions for live demonstrations of 'Progress Towards Machine Intelligence' organized by the British Computer Society Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence (SGAI) in association with AKRI Ltd.
The demonstration can be of either software (e.g. a question- answering system or a speech recognition system) or hardware
(e.g. a mobile robot).
This competition will put on show real systems demonstrated live. It is hoped that the competition and the competitors, over several years, will provide a new interest and visible improvements in the development of machine intelligence.
Entry Fee: There is no entry fee and conference registration is not required.
Prize: A permanent trophy awarded for one year plus a £1,000 cash prize.
Format: The prize will be awarded on the basis of a 10-15 minute live demonstration (not a paper or a technical description). The prize will be awarded to the demonstration that in the opinion of the judges best demonstrates 'progress towards an intelligent machine'.
Judges: All registered delegates at the conference will be eligible to vote in a secret ballot.
Eligibility: The competition is open to all. A maximum of 5 entries will be presented. To control numbers, these will be selected by the organizers on the basis of information provided by the entrants.

6) Book Chapters: FCI We are editing a series of volumes on 'Foundations on Computational Intelligence' which will be published by the Springer Series in Studies in Computational Intelligence. Until today, we have received an overwhelming response (over 100 proposals so far!) to the first call for chapters. complexity of the optimisation problems nowadays require the development of methods and solutions whose efficiency is measured by their ability to find acceptable results within a reasonable amount of time. Despite there is no guarantee of finding the optimal solution, approaches based on the influence of biology and life sciences such as evolutionary algorithms, neural networks, ant systems, swarm intelligence, artificial immune systems, and many others have been shown to be highly practical and provided state-of-the-art solutions to various optimisation problems. The aim of this book is to provide a central source of reference by collecting and disseminating the progressive body of knowledge on nature-inspired algorithms and their applications. The main focus will be the implementation of novel nature-inspired solutions for optimisation based on empirical studies. Call for Papers
The development of complex applications involving signal, image and control processing, is classically divided into three consecutive steps: a theoretical study of the algorithms, a study of the target architecture, and finally the implementation. Such a linear design flow is reaching its limits due to the intense pressure on design cycle and strict performance constraints. The approach, called Algorithm-Architecture-Matching, aims to leverage the design flow by a simultaneous study of both algorithmic and architectural issues, taking into account multiple design constraints, as well as algorithm and architecture optimizations.
Introducing new design methodologies is necessary when facing the new emerging applications as for example advanced mobile communication systems or smart sensors based systems. This forms a driving force for the future evolutions of embedded system designs methodologies.
The research community in Europe addressing these issues is very active both in academy and industry. The goals of this Conference are to present the latest results in the domain of design and architecture for signal and image processing and to initiate a regular meeting of European researchers addressing this topic.
The DASIP Conference will give the opportunity for researchers to exchange the ideas and to build the collaboration on emerging topics and technologies. It also aims to strength the links between the European Information Society Technologies (IST) priorities and the researchers in the domain of design and architecture for signal and image processing.
The DASIP Conference results from the success for more than ten years of the French workshop on Algorithm-Architecture-Matching. The first edition called "Workshop on Algorithm Architecture Adequation" was held in Lannion in 1992 (AAA 1992). During eight years a two-year event was organized, AAA 1994 in Grenoble, AAA 1996 in Toulouse, AAA 1998 in Saclay and AAA 2000 in Rocquencourt. In 2002 thanks to its widespread success the workshop was extended to all francophone countries, JFAAA 2002 was held in Monastir and JFAAA 2005 in Dijon. In 2007 the workshop was extended to the Europe in order to reach a wider community. Each edition was a great success gathering more than one hundred of researchers from industry, academia and government organizations. DASIP 2008 will aim to promote and strengthen the links between European researchers further.

More precisely, the session will consider research papers which contribute to the techniques (resources management, scheduling, worst case execution time (WCET) characterization, synchronization mechanisms, etc.) used at operating system level but based on realistic, accurate and pragmatic hardware issues. Title: Systems and Architectures for Real-time Image Processing
Due to rapid advancements in integrated circuit technology, the rich theoretical results that have been developed by the image and video processing research community are now being increasingly applied in practical systems to solve real-world image and video processing problems. Examples of such systems are mobile phones, digital still/video/cell-phone cameras, portable media players, personal digital assistants, high-definition television, video surveillance systems, industrial visual inspection systems, medical imaging devices, vision-guided autonomous robots, and many other real-time embedded systems. In these real-time systems, strict timing requirements demand that results are available within a certain interval of time as imposed by the application. In addition to these strict timing constraints, these systems also involve constraints such as area and power consumption. This special session brings together practitioners and researchers working in all aspects of real-time image and video processing. It will serve as a forum for exchange of novel ideas on corresponding hardware developments, software tools, system solutions, and all types of applications.

Submitted papers should be original and contain contributions oftheoretical, experimental orapplication nature, or be unique experience reports.
Papers must be submitted no later than May 31, 2008 and electronicsubmission in PDF is required. The page limit for a full-length paperis 6 pages. All submissions should be in the IEEE 8.5 two-columnformat. Papers should contain up to 5 keywords.Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, andsoundness, and will be reviewed by at least three or more independentreviewers.
Accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press.Selected papers presented at the conference will be considered forpublication in special issues of several international Journals.
The HIS'08 Program Committee will select one winner for the Best PaperAward (all regular papers are eligible)and one winner for the Best Student Paper Award. For the best studentpaper award, the student must be the sole authorof the paper or the first author and primary contributor. A coverletter (clearly stating the satisfaction of the above mentionedrequirement) to the General Chair/Program Chairmust identify the paper as a candidate for this competition at thetime of submission. The award winners will each be presentedwith an award certificate and a direct payment of 500 Euros at theconference, and an extended version ofthe award-winning papers will be considered for publication in theInternational Journal of Hybrid Intelligent Systems (IJHIS).
It is assumed that all accepted manuscripts would be presented at theconference. All accepted papers must be accompanied by a full paidregistration to appear in the proceedings.All full papers are to be submitted in PDF electronically via the web site.

WORKSHOPS---------The ICLP'08 program will include several workshops. The DC will also offer invited speakers andpanel discussions. Accepted participants will receive partial financial supportto attend the event and the main conference. The best paper and presentationfrom the DC will be given the opportunity to present in special session of themain ICLP conference.
CELEBRATING 20th YEARS OF STABLE MODEL SEMANTICS------------------------------------------------The year 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the publication that introduced thestable model semantics for logic programs with negation. The paper titled "Thestable semantics for logic programs" by Michael Gelfond and Vladimir Lifschitzwas presented at ICLP-1988. It was a momentous event that gave rise to avibrant subfield of logic programming known now as the answer-set programming.Its distinguishing aspects are close connections to the fields of knowledge
representation, satisfiability and constraint satisfaction, ever fastercomputational tools, and a growing list of successful applications.
To celebrate the stable-model semantics, there will be a special session atICLP 2008 dedicated to answer-set programming. The session will feature talksby Michael Gelfond and Vladimir Lifschitz. as well as by other majorcontributions to the field, presenting personal perspectives on thestable-model semantics, its impact and its future. There will be a paneldiscussion, and regular accepted ICLP papers falling into the answer-setprogramming area will complete the program.
CONFERENCE VENUE----------------The conference will be held in the city of Udine, the capital of the historicalregion of Friuli, Italy. Located between the Adriatic sea and the Alps, closeto Venice, Austria and Slovenia, Udine is a city of Roman origins, funded byEmperor Otto in 983. Rich of historical sites, Udine is also famous for itscommercial and shopping opportunities and its outstanding wine and culinarytraditions.

Workshops co-located with international conferences are one of the best venue for the presentation and discussion of preliminary work ornovel ideas, and new open problems to a wide and interested audience.Co-located workshops also provide an opportunity for presenting specialized topics and opportunities for intensivediscussions and project collaboration. The topics of the workshopsco-located with ICLP'08 can cover any areas related to logic programming, (e.g., theory, implementation, environments, language issues,alternative paradigms, applications) including cross-disciplinary areas.However, any workshop proposal will be considered.
The format of the workshop will be decided by the workshop organizers,but ample time must be allowed for general discussion. Workshops can vary in length, but the optimal duration will be half a day or a full day.

Those interested in organizing a workshop at ICLP'08 are invitedto submit a workshop proposal. Proposals should be in English andabout two pages in length. They should contain:
* The title of the workshop. * A brief technical description of the topics covered by the workshop. * A discussion of the timeliness and relevance of the workshop. * A list of some related workshops held in the last years * The (preliminary) required number of half-days allotted to the workshop and an estimate of the number of expected attendees. * The names, affiliation and contact details (email, web page, phone, fax) of the workshop organizer(s) together with a designated contact person. * The previous experiences of the workshop organizing committee in workshop/conference organization.
Proposals are expected in ASCII or PDF format. All proposals should be

Reviewing Process:==================
Each submitted proposal is reviewed by the Workshops Chair and theConference Program Chairs. Proposals that appear well-organized andthat fit the goals and scope of ICLP will be selected. The decisionwill be notified by email to the responsible organizer by June 15, 2008.
The definitive length of the workshop will be planned according to thenumber of submissions received by the different workshops. For everyaccepted workshop, the ICLP local organizers will prepare a meetingplace and can print the workshop proceedings, whose LaTeX preparationis however in charge to the workshop organizers. The workshopregistration fees will be handled together with the conference fees.

GENERAL INFORMATION The first Workshop on Practical Aspects of Automated Reasoning will be held in August 2008, in Sydney, Australia. PAAR will be associated with the 4th International Joint Conference on Automated Reasoning (IJCAR-2008).
SCOPE PAAR provides a forum for developers of automated reasoning tools to discuss and compare different implementation techniques, and for users to discuss and communicate their applications and requirements. This workshop will bring together different groups to concentrate on practical aspects of the implementation and application of automated reasoning tools. It will allow researchers to present their work in progress, and to discuss new implementation techniques and applications.
Topics include but are not limited to: o automated reasoning in classical and non-classical logics, implementation of provers; o automated reasoning tools for all kinds of practical problems and applications; o practical experiences, case studies, feasibility studies;
o evaluation of implementation techniques and automated reasoning tools; o benchmarking approaches; o non-standard approaches to automated reasoning, non-standard forms of automated reasoning, new applications; o implementation techniques, optimisation techniques, strategies and heuristics; o system descriptions and demos.
We are particularly interested in contributions that help the community to understand how to build useful and powerful reasoning systems in practice, and how to apply existing systems to real problems.
SUBMISSIONS Researchers interested in participating are invited to submit a short (2-10 pages) abstract via EasyChair. Submissions will be refereed by the program committee, which will select a balanced program of high-quality contributions.

Submission Details===================
We will accept submissions in the following formats:
- Original novel and unpublished work for publication in the post-conference proceedings (max. 15 pages in Springer LNCS format);
- An extended abstract of work-in-progress or a position statement (max. 4 pages);
- Manuscripts that have recently been accepted for publication or appeared within the last 6 months in a peer-reviewed journal or which are currently under review (only for oral presentation).
Each submission will be evaluated according to its relevance to themeeting, novelty, technical quality, and presentation.
Extended abstracts of work-in-progress and position statements willnot appear in the post-conference proceedings volume. However, alimited set of work-in-progress abstracts will be invited for thesubmission of a complete paper after the conference, to undergo anadditional review process as for the complete papers above. All
submissions will appear in informal proceedings, to be distributed atthe conference.
The post-conference proceedings will be published by a major international publisher; as for LION 2, we expect to publish the proceedings again in Springer's LectureNotes in Computer Science (LNCS) series.
Best Paper Award=================
A best paper award will be presented at the conference.

Solving real-world optimization problems faces metaheuristic algorithms to really challenging tasks, such as high computational requirements, hardly constrained, high dimensionality, etc. These challenges have to be addressed properly in order to provide this kind of problems with high quality solutions. Usually this means to extend or to create new operators, algorithms or implementations that are specifically targeted to be used in real time or big dimension problems. The sustained research effort over recent years succeeded to achieve many practical and theoretical results in the development and application of new techniques for solving real-world optimization problems. This special session is aimed at presenting and discussing on these latest advances in this interesting field or research. In the context of the International Conference on Metaheuristics and Nature Inspired Computing, we organize a special session entitled "Meta-Heuristics for Security, Reliability and Trust".
SESSION DESCRIPTION
The increasing complexity of recent systems and networks has raised new concerns in terms of security, reliability and trust. Indeed, the past few years have seen a significant increase in cyber attacks on the Internet, resulting in degraded confidence and trusts in the use of Internet and computer systems. The same way, there is an increasing demand for measures to guarantee the privacy, integrity, and availability of resources in distributed systems, such as Grid and P2P systems.
These new problematics require dependable systems and networks which can intelligently react to abnormal situations and ensure the security, reliability, quality and trustworthiness of the information. Meta-heuristics provide a way to develop such techniques, algorithms, protocols and tools in the different aspects such as authentication, access control, availability, integrity, privacy, confidentiality and non-repudiation as they apply to both networks and systems.
This special session convene researchers in the areas of security, reliability, trust and meta-heuristics. We seek to collect the most recent advances in metaheuristics (genetic algorithms, ant colony algorithms, particle swarm optimization, etc.) which are applied to security, reliability and trust.
Both theoretical papers and papers describing practical experiences will be welcome.

Wireless ad hoc networks are communication networks that consist entirely ofwireless nodes, placed together in an ad hoc manner, i.e. with minimalplanning. Wireless ad hoc networks pose substantially different challenges compared tomore traditional communication networks: they are highly dynamic, have limitedresources (in terms of bandwidth, computation power, battery, etc.), have ahighly decentralized organization, rely on often unreliable wirelesscommunication channels, etc. As a consequence, new algorithms and protocols are
needed for all aspects of the organization of these networks. SwarmIntelligence methods seem particularly interesting in this context. This isbecause their ability to solve difficult tasks in a distributed and robust wayusing locally interacting simple agents fits closely to the typical environmentcreated by an ad hoc network.
In this special session, we solicit novel and interesting contributions in thisarea, with special reference to applications of Swarm Intelligence in thedomain of:

The series of International Conferences on Logic for Programming, ArtificialIntelligence and Reasoning (LPAR) is a forum where, year after year, some ofthe most renowned researchers in the areas of automated reasoning,computational logic, programming languages and their applications come topresent cutting-edge results, to discuss advances in these fields, and toexchange ideas in a scientifically emerging part of the world. The 2008edition will be held in Doha, Qatar, on the premises of the Qatar campus ofCarnegie Mellon University.
Logic is a fundamental organizing principle in nearly all areas in ComputerScience. It runs a multifaceted gamut from the foundational to the applied. Atone extreme, it underlies computability and complexity theory and the formalsemantics of programming languages. At the other, it drives billions of gatesevery day in the digital circuits of processors of all kinds. Logic is initself a powerful programming paradigm but it is also the quintessentialspecification language for anything ranging from real-time critical systems to
networked infrastructures. It is logical techniques that link implementationand specification through formal methods such as automated theorem proving andmodel checking. Logic is also the stuff of knowledge representation andartificial intelligence. Because of its ubiquity, logic has acquired a centralrole in Computer Science education.

* Regular papers are meant to describe solid new research results. SCOPE:
In many real-life problems, we search for objects of complex nature --plans, schedules, assignments. Such objects are often represented as(finite) structures, which are implicitly specified by means oftheories in some logic. Thus, languages are needed to describestructures, and algorithms to extract them from these implicitdescriptions. Propositional Satisfiability (SAT), ConstraintProgramming (CP), and Answer Set Programming (ASP) are arguably thethree most prominent areas that develop such languages and techniques.
Each of these areas has been proposed as a declarative programmingapproach to solving NP-complete combinatorial problems. Such problemsabound in computer science, engineering, operations researchcomputational biology and other fields. In many cases, progress islimited by the difficulty of designing implicit representations ofstructures (modeling), which hinders common acceptance of the aproach,and the inability to solve sufficiently large instances of theproblems in practical time bounds (search algorithms). Therefore,these three areas have as a major goal the development of practicalmodeling languages and methodologies that support the modeling, andalgorithms and tools for efficient problem solving.
Despite the similar goals of these areas, in many respects SAT, ASP andCP develop as three independent disciplines, focusing on rather differentparticular problems or questions. There are few, if any, researcherswho are experts in all three areas. To date, we are not aware of any
meeting which specifically aims at bringing these three areas together.
Objectives==========
LaSh08 aims to offer a discussion forum for research in SAT, ASP andCP that focuses on the computation of structures from declarativedescriptions. We invite contributions on modeling languages,methodologies, theoretical analysis, techniques, algorithms andsystems. The forum is an occasion to exchange ideas on thestate-of-the-art; to discuss specific technical problems; to formulatechallenges and opportunities ahead; to analyse differences andsimularities between the different areas; to study opportunities forsynergy and integration.
In particular, we would like to foster exchange at least on thefollowing topics:
-- integrations of SAT, ASP and/or CP technologies -- comparisons of modeling languages -- criteria for choice of modeling languages

LaSh08 will also provide an opportunity for presentation of implementedsystems and tools at a demo session. Thus, we invite submissions ofsystems and tools that reflect the above ideas, and aim at facilitatingdeclarative problem solving, and making it practical and used.

The workshops objective is to create an informal, stimulating

APPLICATION PAPERS------------------
Within the scope of the general call for papers for the upcoming 24thInternational Conference on Logic Programming, we would like to draw theattention of researchers and practitioners on the opportunity to submitmanuscripts to the Application Track of the conference.
Application papers, are expected to describing complex and/or real-worldapplications that rely in an essential manner on the use of logic programmingtechnology. Description of innovative applications as well as engineeringsolutions leveraging logic programming technology are solicited.
Papers must describe original, previously unpublished results, and must not besimultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere.
Submissions MUST contain substantial original, unpublished material. Allsubmissions must be written in English. Application papers should be structuredto emphasize:
* the application domain, in terms understandable by a layman * the specific problem addressed within the application domain, stressing importance and complexity * a clear discussion of the unique need for logic programming technology to address the problem * a clear description of the application developed and its evaluation.
PUBLICATION-----------The proceedings of the conference will be published by Springer-Verlag in theLNCS series. All accepted papers and posters will be included in theproceedings.
WORKSHOPS---------The ICLP'08 program will include several workshops. They are perhaps the bestplace for the presentation of preliminary work, novel ideas, and new openproblems to a more focused and specialized audience. Workshops also provide avenue for presenting specialised topics and opportunities for intensivediscussions and project collaboration in any areas related to logicprogramming, including cross-disciplinary areas.
DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM-------------------The Doctoral Consortium (DC) on Logic Programming is the 4th Doctoralconsortium to provide doctoral students with the opportunity to present anddiscuss their research directions, and to obtain feedback from both peers andword-renown experts in the field. The DC will also offer invited speakers andpanel discussions. Accepted participants will receive partial financial support
to attend the event and the main conference. The best paper and presentationfrom the DC will be given the opportunity to present in special session of themain ICLP conference.
CELEBRATING 20th YEARS OF STABLE MODEL SEMANTICS------------------------------------------------The year 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the publication that introduced thestable model semantics for logic programs with negation. The paper titled "Thestable semantics for logic programs" by Michael Gelfond and Vladimir Lifschitzwas presented at ICLP-1988. It was a momentous event that gave rise to avibrant subfield of logic programming known now as the answer-set programming.Its distinguishing aspects are close connections to the fields of knowledgerepresentation, satisfiability and constraint satisfaction, ever fastercomputational tools, and a growing list of successful applications.

This is the first of a series of small and thematically focused eventsin formal epistemology organized by Eric Swanson (Michigan), Jonathan Weisberg(Toronto), and Franz Huber (Konstanz).
The background for the first Formal Epistemology Festival is the 40thanniversary of Robert Stalnaker’s “A Theory of Conditionals” and the 20th anniversaryof Wolfgang Spohn’s “Ordinal Conditional Functions. A Dynamic Theory of Epistemic States”.
The festivities of 2009 will take place in Ann Arbor, featuring CausalDecision Theory and Scoring Rules (this happens to be the 10th anniversary of JamesJoyce’s The Foundations of Causal Decision Theory). The festivities of 2010 willtake place in Toronto and focus on Defeater/Default Logic and Perception (thishappens to be the 30th anniversary of Ray Reiter’s “A Logic for Default Reasoning” and the15th anniversary of John Pollock’s Cognitive Carpentry). Video processing and analysis
techniques become more and more important in the field of computer visionand image understanding and other related areas. There are wide-ragepotential video-based applications in many areas including multimedia, humancomputer interface, security and surveillance, copyright protection,personal entertainment, to name a few.
Video mining is to discover and describe interesting patterns in video data,which has become one of the core problem areas of the data mining researchcommunity. Compared to the mining of other types of data (e.g., text),video mining is still in its infancy, and an under-explored field. There aremany challenging research problems facing video mining. For example, how todiscover knowledge from spatial-temporal data, how to infer high-levelsemantic concepts from low-level features extracted from videos, how to makeuse of unlabeled data. Applying general data mining techniques for videodata will face a number of difficulties as well, because of the need toanalyze large amount of high-dimensional data. To address these challenges,we have to adapt the existing data mining theory or algorithm for video data,or find new techniques and approaches suitable for video data.
This one-day workshop seeks to present and highlight the latest developmentsin video data mining and video-based applications. It aims to bring togetherworldwide researchers from related disciplines, to provide a forum for thedissemination of significant research work and innovative practice, and toencourage exchanges, interactions and possible collaboration betweenparticipants.

The conference covers all aspects ofdata mining, including algorithms, software and systems, andapplications. In addition, ICDM draws researchers and applicationdevelopers from a wide range of data mining related areas such asstatistics, machine learning, pattern recognition, databases and datawarehousing, data visualization, knowledge-based systems, and highperformance computing. ICDM'08 will host tutorials covering topics in data mining of interest tothe research community as well as application developers. The tutorialswill be part of the main conference technical program, and are free ofcharge to the attendees of the conference.
We invite proposals for tutorials from active researchers and experiencedtutors. Ideally, a tutorial will cover the state-of-the-art research,development and applications in a specific data mining direction, andstimulate and facilitate future work. A tutorial should not mainly focuson only the presenters' previous work. Tutorials on interdisciplinarydirections, novel and fast growing directions, and significantapplications are highly encouraged.
ICDM will provide an honorarium for each tutorial. It is possible,depending on actual conference attendance, that the conference can(partly) support travel and subsistence expenses for tutorial speakers.Please provide an estimate for these expenses in your proposal if you areexpecting the conference to cover these expenses for you. CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
Contributions are invited in the form of papers of up to fourteen A4pages presenting original work in AI. Contributions may be submittedto either of two streams for oral presentation, or a parallel postersession (six pages maximum).
Technical Stream
Areas of interest include (but are not restricted to): knowledgeengineering; semantic web; constraint satisfaction; intelligentagents; machine learning; model based reasoning; verification andvalidation of AI systems; natural language understanding;speech-enabled systems; case based reasoning; neural networks;genetic algorithms; data mining and knowledge discovery in databases;knowledge representation, inference and reasoning; robotics andpervasive computing; qualitative and temporal reasoning; knowledgemanagement; AI languages and environments; robotics and pervasivecomputing.
Application Stream
Case studies are welcomed describing the application of AI to real-world problems. Papers in recent years have covered all application domains, including commerce, manufacturing and government, and every major AI technique. In addition to case studiesand specific applications of AI, we would welcome papers that discussissues such as managing the transfer from research to production ofAI-based products. Papers are selected to highlight critical areas of
success (and failure) and to present the benefits and lessons of valueto other developers. Submitted papers should make these points clear.Guidance notes for Application Stream authors are available from thewebsite.
Poster Session
The Poster Session is intended for the presentation of work whichmeets the high standards of AI-2008, but which is more topical andpreliminary than the work presented in the main two streams. It is anexcellent forum for disseminating new developments and latest work inprogress, especially suited to MSc and PhD students. Poster paperswill be printed as short papers (maximum 6 pages) in the proceedingsvolumes. Papers submitted to the Technical and Application streamswill automatically be considered as posters if they fall short of thestandard for oral presentation in full form.
Publication of Papers
Papers accepted for presentation at the conference will be publishedin book form by Springer.
- The books will be prepared from camera-ready copy supplied by theauthors of accepted papers.
- Formatting specifications for the proceedings have been provided bythe publisher and are available from the conference website.
- Authors will retain copyright in all papers published in the twovolumes of proceedings.
- The best six refereed papers in each stream will be reprinted as aspecial issue of the international journal Knowledge Based Systems.
Submission of Papers
Papers must be prepared in either Microsoft Word or Latex. Initialversions of papers should be submitted in PDF format only anduploaded to the conference website by SUNDAY JUNE 15th 2008 at thelatest. There are revised Word macro and Latex style files comparedwith previous years.
- At least one author of each accepted paper must register for andattend the conference to present it in person, for the paper to bepublished.
- Presenting authors will be asked to register for the conference atthe discounted speakers' rate when they return the final camera-readyprinted versions of their papers.
Tutorials & workshops
The Conference Committee invites proposals for tutorials and workshops to be presented on the first day of the conference. These should bedirected in the first instance to the Tutorial/Workshop Organiser.
Prizes
There are sponsored prizes (a trophy plus 500 pounds) for the bestpaper submitted in each stream and a trophy plus a cash prize for thebest poster, awarded on the basis of delegate voting.
Machine Intelligence Competition
A permanent trophy awarded for one year plus a 1,000 pounds cash prizewill be awarded to the winner of the annual machine intelligencecompetition. This prize will be awarded to the working system that isconsidered to be the most significant step forward towards MachineIntelligence on display at the competition.

Computer Vision and Image Understanding Special Issue on 3D Representation for Object and Scene Recognition
Object and scene categorization has been a central topic of computer vision research in recent years. The problem is a highly challenging one. A single object or scene may show tremendous variability in appearance and structure under various photometric and geometric conditions. In addition, members of the same class may differ from each other due to various degrees of intra-class variability. Recently, researchers have proposed new powerful models and learning tools for handling categorization of objects and scenes. However, much work still needs to be done towards the goal of: i) finding a suitable representation that can efficiently capture the three-dimensional nature of objects and scenes; ii) taking advantage of this representation to help the recognition task. We are soliciting original contributions which can provide both theoretical and experimental insight on this fundamental problem. Specific questions we would like to address include, but are not limited, to:
