    Summary of the Lesson Plan:This is a second grade social studies lesson designed to have students compare characteristics of cities

    and suburbs.

    Target Population:

    Second Grade Students at all learning levels. Whole group reading and individual assessment.

    Materials:

    Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Neighborhoods. Paper, poster boards, colored pencils, markers, crayons, pencils. City Sounds, by: Jean Marzollo Come to Town by: Anne Rockwell

    Objectives:

    G7.2.3 Define and compare rural and urban communities. G7.2.3 I can tell the difference between a rural and urban community.

    Procedure:

    1. Teacher will read, City Sounds, by: Jean Marzollo and Come to Town by: Anne Rockwell.2. Have students look at the pictures on page 44-47.

    Ask the students what they see that they know and what they would like to know. Ask students what happens when the areas that people live in change and what causes

    change.

    Ask the students about their own houses. Are the houses close together or far apart?3. Teacher will read page 44-45. Teacher will ask about what you see in urban areas.

    The students discuss with the teachers the following questions:In what ways can one part of the city be different than another part of the city?

    Describe the photos on page 45, In what ways are they different?

    4. Teacher will read 46-47 to the students. Teacher will then ask the following questions:

    Do people who work in the city always live in the city? What are some ways that the people in the suburbs depend on people in the city?

    5. Students will complete study guide, Unit resources-page 10.6. Have the students compare Las Vegas to Henderson on a piece of construction paper. Draw

    pictures to represent the features of both.

    In what ways are Henderson and Las Vegas alike? In what ways are Las Vegas and Henderson different?

    7. Closure: Students will share their pictures of Las Vegas and Henderson. Students will then beasked to explain the differences between cities and suburbs.

    Assessment:

    Teacher will assess the study guide and pictures of Las Vegas comparing Henderson.

    Reflection:

    Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?I think the easiest part of the lesson will be using the textbook to compare the city to the

    suburbs.

    Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?I think the most difficult part will be having the students compare Las Vegas and Henderson.

    Especially when we see the contrast of the homes and the Las Vegas Strip being all a part of

    Las Vegas.

    How will you follow up or extend this lesson?I would follow up this lesson by having the students make a model of a city or a suburb.

    What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?For students who dont grasp the concept I will review the material in a small group and work

    closely with them when they are doing their independent work.

    Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I might not include the part on Las Vegas. I might make that a separate lesson.

    When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?The most difficult part was connecting it to the other lessons in the unit and not becoming

    redundant.
