In one of his songs, Billy Ocean sings: “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going”. During this year I witnessed how the Afrimat team got going in the midst of extreme volatility and uncertainty in the market. We reported the team’s financial results for the first half of this financial year early in November and investors were pleasantly surprised when comparing our results with that of most other companies in our industry. We are all

truly blessed and for this we can be grateful.

The year 2011 is coming to an end and it is time to relax a little. Thank you very much for a year of valuable work by each team member. May you all have a good rest and a blessed

Christmas period, return in 2012 fully recharged, ready for another exciting year.

Future plans and development are in full swing at Kliprug Quarry Durbanville.

The following has been achieved since we started with layouts and construction in April 2011. We stand proud in saying that the Primary Crushing Plant section is nearly completed and will be able to receive rock soon. Our MCC room is well positioned overlooking our Primary, Secondary and Tertiary sections.

The Secondary and Tertiary plants are presently being constructed at the Central Workshops and is planned to be installed and commissioned by February 2012. With the Quarrying side now taking shape and obtaining good material we will shortly have our benches established.

With Senior Management’s input, we are proud to say, that Kliprug Quarry will soon be completed and ready for action and able to be competitive in the market.

NUWE MASJIENE

“SPLINTERNUUT”

Meer Blokke, Höer Kompaksie en Laer Eenheidskoste

CAT 924 laaigraaf van Ready Mix in Hermanus

4.

‘36” FC Gyrasphere’ nou in werking by Dennegeur Groef.

NEWS FROM THE NORTHCharl Marais

May the Lord bless and keep you. May His face shine upon you.

Wees geseëndCharl Marais

TWO WOLVES

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. “One is Evil -

It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

“The other is Good - It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

NEW APPOINTMENTCongratulations...

2010 was a difficult year for us all in the Western Cape. It was about this time last year that we commenced the budget process for 2011 and I was feeling rather pes-simistic for the year ahead. Despite ending 2010 strongly, the question in my mind was how would we carry this through into 2011 with intensified competition in a dif-ficult market?Looking at our six monthly results recently published, together with our order book, I can say that you have done it! The hard work that every individual has put in has resulted in an unbeatable team and the results show this. Results like these come from hard work and sacrifice where we often neglect our families and ourselves. As we reach the end of 2011 and move into the festive season, let us take time to rest

and enjoy spending some quality time away from work with our loved ones. Let us not forget those colleagues we have lost during the time and let us spare a thought for their families at this time.Thank you all for your contribution over the year and may you have a blessed festive season. I look forward to 2012 when we can continue to build on our successes. 201235. Davin GilesWESTERN CAPE: REGIONAL MANAGER

A two day Health and Safety Representative training course was conducted on the 2nd and third of November 2011 at the Worcester office for the Western Cape region.

Day one consisted of a theory session, delegates were trained on the legal aspects of a Health and Safety Representative’s responsibility as stipulated in the Mine Health and Safety Act. Day two was a practical session with a visit to Brewelskloof Quarry where Mine Manager, Mike Coad welcomed all for a full safety inspection of his operation.

Apart from a few recommendations for improvement, the newly trained SHE reps were generally satisfied with the Safety systems at Brewelskloof Quarry. Well done to team Brewelskloof, for keeping their site!!!

Congratulations to all the newly trained SHE representatives, who, according to EEC Trainer Fanie Strauss, all passed the course with flying colors.

• Our PLANET and the EnvironmentImagine this....One day you come out from your house and all you see is big puffs of black smoke and no trees! All you hear are cars and no birds! All you smell is gasoline and no flowers! What kind of life is that?

All we need to do to reduce the problem is simply to be less wasteful.

• Our PLANET needs saving, this is what we can do as an individual:

• Switch off all non-essential appliances that use electricity when you leave home for work. Stick to a routine of shutting off as many electrical appliances as possible when you leave a room and/or home. Even when an appliance is off, it may still use power.• It is important to note that cell phone and laptop chargers, as well as some other plug-in devices, continue to drain energy from your electrical circuit, even when the item being charged or utilized is no longer connected. Unplug the chargers altogether.• One drop per minute can add up over time. Check your taps and any other appliance that uses water straight from the source. If your taps drip, get them fixed, or at least put a container under the drip in the meantime and use the water later.• Turn off the water when you’re not using it. While brushing your teeth, shaving, washing dishes and even taking a shower. Why is the water running for so long? There is no point, is there? It is okay if you forget a few times, but if you forget a lot, put a little sticky note on the wall in front of the sink, with the reminder, “Turn off the tap. Don’t waste water!”• Install low-flow toilets in your home, or put a brick in the reservoir (the back) of your current toilet. The space the brick takes up in the bottom of the tank will permit you to use less water, but it will keep the toilet functional. Also try adjusting the water level down. Many toilets have an adjustment to lower the valve float.• Organize a carpool for work and/or school travels.• Plan your errands to avoid unnecessary trips. This will use more gas and waste time.• Avoid using disposable items as much as possible. Anything you use only a few times and throw away consumes resources only to spend centuries in a landfill.• Avoid using plastic whenever you can; it is a poison of the earth (things like disposable plastic cups, plastic bags, nonsense plastic items you don’t need).• Use re-sealable, reusable containers instead of plastic wrap or plastic bags.• Switch to compact florescent or LED light bulbs.• Reuse glass bottles.

Safety, Health and Environment (S.H.E)

We as Afrimat have a great responsibility to comply with national S.H.E. legislation, especially in the ever changing environment that Afrimat has to operate in. Thus, it takes a lot of commitment, skill, integrity, knowledge, time and effort from us all to ensure compliance with all the legislation applicable to us.

Then, legislation is constantly changing to accommodate and adapt all the changes due to technology evolvement and activity changes.

Thanks to each and everyone that did their part in managing and improving the Safety, Health & Environmental status of the group!

EMPLOYMENT EQUITY TRAININGRubin Bebe

The Employment Equity Committee of Afrimat Aggregates Operations, recently received training on matters pertaining employment equity.

The training was conducted by Faranani Facilitation Services (Pty) Ltd who is an accredited service provider.

The EEC (Employment Equity Committee) comprise of the following employees:

• Davin Giles

• Rubin Bebe

• Charlrica Julies

• Andries Burger

• Freddy Marone

• Maxwell Fatyelo

• Willmar Jeftha

• Vanessa Danger

• Johan Burger

They represented the various constituencies from the designated and non-designated groups as defined in the Employment Equity 55 of 1998.

The training session commenced with some interesting exercises, dealing with diversity and employment equity. One of the exercises which stood out was where the groups had to define the term employment equity using a sketch. It required participation of all the committee members to complete a sketch.

Group A drew a rugby field populated by the players in various positions on the field. The main theme of their sketch was about levelling the playing field and the importance of teamwork in the workplace.

Group B drew a paddock with various types of horses. Their main themes were breaking down of barriers within the workplace and unlocking people’s potential by harnessing diversity and skills development.

Other key elements dealt with during the training course were:

• The roles and responsibilities of the EE Committee.

• Reporting to the Department of Labour.

• The definition of diversity namely: “Diversity is a combination of observable and unobservable differences and similarities”

• The different forms of discrimination, namely:

14.

• Unfair discrimination – violates basic human rights.• Fair discrimination – Corrective Action because it acts as remedy to a situation of unfair discrimination in the past. • Direct (overt) discrimination – done out in the open • Indirect discrimination – subtle or covert • Unaware discrimination – misinformation is so deeply embedded in the subconscious that the person is not even aware that it is influencing their behavior.• Inaction – when you see or hear discrimination taking place but do nothing about it. You are perpetuating discrimination• The various sections of the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998• Integrated HR and EE Strategy / Model for the company, to mention but a few of the topics presented at the course.

The current economic climate has forced role players within the industry to compete aggressively on price in order to obtain contracts from clients.

However it has become more and more apparent that clients are still focused on obtaining the lowest price for the goods received yet they expect excellent quality with first class service.

In order to strengthen our presence in the Cape Town market, Afrimat Readymix has embarked on a customer service delivery drive.

All Afrimat Readymix (Cape) (Pty) Ltd teams were sent on a workshop with VETTA Communication in October 2011.

Aspects dealt with during the training programme:

• Understanding the role, function and importance of the job

• Company representation: image and personal appearance

• Taking ownership and responsibility

• Understanding the importance of customer service

• Communication skills

• Understanding the components of productivity and their interdependencies

• Busy VS Productive work

• Understanding complaints

• Time management

• Basic life skills

We have received great feedback from the Supervisors of the production teams after the customer service training. The general message received was that the teams were enthusiastic and had a greater understanding of their role within the organization and the role of the customer.

Examples of some of the feedback received after the training:

Worcester Plant – Mr John Jansen

“The team is motivated to provide excellent customer service to the Clients. They plan to implement the suggestions given during the workshop to improve themselves to comply with the image of the company”

Killarney Gardens Plant – Mr Jarid Gavey

“The team has a new energy. They are using their time in the Plant more effectively in order to get the product to the customer more quickly”

Hermanus Plant – Mr Hennie Bester

“The team is definitely more motivated after the training. They have asked for more cleaning materials to ensure that their trucks are always neat and clean”

Stellenbosch Plant – Mr Vernon Lewis

“Great participation received from the teams during the workshop”

Paarl Plant – Mr Melrick Samuels

“Our teams are hardworking individuals, the workshop has inspired them”

Management would like to thank the teams for sacrificing their Saturdays in October 2011 to complete this training, your loyalty and dedication towards improving the service delivery is appreciated.

17.

Once there were two farmers who desperately needed rain. The first one only prayed for rain. The second one prayed for rain and prepared his fields. Which one’s prayer was answered? First, we must have the faith, but we must also act and prepare the fields in our lives.

Angus Bucham used to say; “Faith is to believe in the things we cannot see and the reward is to see what we believe.” Heb. 11:1 “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”(It is therefore the assurance/confirmation of the things we hope for and the proof/conviction of things hap-pening although we cannot always see it.) Without faith you cannot prepare the field for rain in that aspect of your life where you need a breakthrough. Noah had to prepare the field (ark) and people laughed at him, so, without faith the circumstances were not right for him to build an ark.Faith is to become a water walker for Jesus. (The story of Peter walking on the water, Matt 14: 23-30)

If we look at the story of Peter walking on the water it boils down to one thing only – Faith:

• The first “ingredient” in this story is very clear – the circumstances might never be right when we expect a miracle. When you have faith and you prepare the field for rain, the circumstances might never be right. God wants us to have faith – believe in the impossible, despite the circumstances. Let us corporately believe (have the faith) for Afrimat to do well despite the recession (circumstances). Let us pray like the 2nd farmer and prepare the field.

• The second “ingredient” in this story is that we must ask specific. Peter asked: “Lord if it is You, command me to come to You on the water” (Matt 14:28). When you expect a miracle you must ask specific. We tend to pray and ask very general and we don’t see our prayers answered – and we start losing out faith. An example “Lord please bless Afrimat” (general). “Lord help Afrimat to grow our HEPS over the next 12 months by 20% and help us to prepare the field so that You can show us the harvest.” (specific)

• The third “ingredient” in this story is not so obvious, but Peter, when he stepped out of that boat, did not have a plan B, C or D. It was not a good night for water walking, it was dark and there was a storm on the sea. If you trust the Lord with all your heart, mind and whole being, He will reward you. Having a backup plan lacks faith. The world teaches us to have a plan B, C and D, God only wants us to have one plan – to fully trust him.

• The fourth “ingredient” in the story is obvious, but we miss it so easily, Peter got out of the boat. We sometimes do a lot of praying, but we lack the acting part. Remember the secondfarmer, he prayed and he acted by preparing the field.

We serve a God of the impossible, what is impossible for man is possible for God. Remember the circumstances might never be right for a miracle, because it is “impossible”.Let us all pray and prepare the field, whether in our work environment or on a personal level.

May 2012 be a blessed year for every Afrimat employee and their family and my prayer is that 2012 will be a year of harvest, because you prayed and prepared the field for God.

Amen

HENLEY HIGHAt Glen Douglas Dolomite Mine - Theresa Snyman

Henley High School (situated next to the mine on Henley Drive) approached Mr. Deon Bosman, Mine Manager at Glen Douglas, to allow for the Gr 11 pupils to visit the Mine and introduce them to the different career paths.

A program was put together for them to attend on Wednesday 26th October and we sent it to Mrs. Jeann Dickinson (Principal of Henley High).

The Glen Douglas Management Team showed true Team Spirit and on Wednesday morning was more than ready to welcome the Henley High School’s 12 Gr 11 pupils accompanied by Mr. Faan De Beer both teachers from the school.

They were introduced to the Management Team and after a short safety induction by Mr. Voice Reza, our Head of Safety, they attended an impressive presentation by Mr. Deon Bosman on the Mine including careers and job availability in the mining industry. A tour of the Mine followed and then they were treated to refreshments at Bass Lake (Pit A) where they were each handed an A4 Zip-around Folder that included an Afrimat branded pen, writing pad and info on career paths.

We trust that the pupils left with a greater understanding of the works of the Mine within their community and industry as a whole.

This year for the Christmas donation, Afrimat Readymix (Cape) (Pty) Ltd participated in the Santa Shoebox Project.

The Santa Shoebox Project is a non-profit organization that collects gifts at Christmas time for the socially under-privileged children throughout South Africa, by way of a social and community network of families, friends, schools and churches.

Established in 2006, it is an initiative of the Kidz2Kidz Trust, a registered Public Benefit Organization (PBO number 930031301 - Public Benefits Organization Kidz2Kidz Trust), that offers assistance to children in need.

The Santa Shoebox Project is instrumental in involving people from all walks of life, especially children together with their parents, in giving to children from a distinctly vulnerable social background who may never have received a Christmas gift before.

Afrimat Readymix (Cape) (Pty) Ltd pledged 10 gift boxes to the Santa Shoebox Project. The gift boxes were supplied to five girls and five boys ranging from ages 3 to 6 years of age. In October, Davin Giles held a customer service feedback meeting for 70 of Afrimat’s Western Cape Sales personnel, Truck drivers, Weighbridge Operators and Quarry and Transport Managers in Rawsonville. The aim of the morning workshop was to look at changes that were implemented in the company and to highlight points, making the employees more aware of how we handle our customers, their deliveries, truck and machine maintenance, internal communication and what our customers think and expect of our Company and discuss any adjustments for 2012.

Hylton Hale started us off with feedback from the Voice of the Customer Survey. He outlined the aspects of the survey where our account customers were contacted and asked about our service, product prices and general que-ries. Although the outcome was fairly positive, there will always be room for improvement towards our Customers, deliveries and sales.

Next we listened to Afrimat’s Weighing consultant, Jonathan Deane, from SASCO (South African Scales Company) whom is dealing with all our weighbridge operations and legal compliances at all our sites. He was able to shed some light on the systems that have been put in place to support the ongoing service at our integrated infrastruc-tures throughout all the South African quarries. Johan Burger from our Technical and Laboratory Department in Worcester gave us some insight into the problems experienced with our products, material specs and samples. He invited those who had never been to the Laboratory in Worcester, to visit his team. All our drivers were reminded about the importance of keeping their trucks neat and clean before and after all loads to avoid contamination and to ensure that customers are satisfied. Any feedback from our clients is important. Our drivers, being the FACE of Afrimat, should feel a sense of pride in delivering and producing Afrimat’s products to satisfied customers and sites.

Our Workshop Manager, Jorrie Jordan reflected on truck and vehicle maintenance. A little more effort and time is needed in looking after our vehicles and keeping them in a good and clean condition. Eventually less problems will arise and consequently save the company maintenance costs. Time management is very important in our sales structure as we need to work together as a team, always insuring we have the correct customer information and orders. If there are no mistakes there will be fewer problems and no issues with bad service quality or loss of income.

Lastly Marlo Janse van Rensburg, our Company’s Sustainability Manager gave us some insight in our social and labor planning within the company and helped our employees to get involved in enhancing their future development. He advised staff interested in improving their future to speak to their Line Managers and find out what their options are, and not to always wait for something to happen!!

There is nothing wrong with pursuing a vision for greatness, it all starts here because after all we don’t want to be good, we want to be GREAT!

Special thanks to all the Managers who contributed to the meeting and the employees for giving up their Saturday morning to take part in the Workshop. Our sincere thanks to Marna Strydom for her time and effort in making special arrangements for food and venue requirements. It was much appreciated by all.

OlympicOlympic sandmyn was soos alle jare weer ‘n staatmaker in 2011.

Weereens uitstekend vir n myn wat so besig is.

Weereens baie dankie vir my span se harde werk hierdie jaar.

After our selection to sail in the New York Yacht Club Invitational, we started preparing with great expectation. We are now back from this incredible experience and have returned a little wiser and even more very keen to repeat the whole exercise in 2013.The Americans know how to do things with style, and what an event it was! It all started in October 2010, when South Africa, through Royal Cape Yacht Club, was invited to compete in the regatta to be sailed in Newport, Rhode Island (About three hours drive North of New York). The invitation was immediately accepted and the process of team selection began. I was fortunate to be selected as a “trimmer”, whose responsibility it is to trim the spinnaker (large balloon sail) downwind. Our training schedule and diet plan were quite intense. We had to reach a team weight of 850 kg. This was quite a push as my weight loss target was 8 kilograms but in the end I managed to shed 9 kilograms by giving up beer, bread and starch and doing some exercise. 16 Nations from around the world competed in 24 identical 42 foot racing yachts. Our team flew with SAA to New York, a direct 16 hour flight. Once we arrived at JFK we collected our two left-hand drive Chrysler Voyagers and tackled the NY traffic which was no mean feat.On arrival in Newport we went straight to Registration where we met some of our competitors and our host, the New York Yacht Club. We weighed in to ensure that our crew were within the weight limit, (we had about 4 kilos to spare), and we signed all the race documents and liability clauses along with our yacht allocation.Once our yacht was allocated, we could meet with the “owner’s rep” and start preparing the boat for the challenge ahead. Although we practiced on a similar boat in Cape Town, this boat was not so familiar to us. We had two days of practice sailing and familiarizing ourselves with this particular type of boat. Initially we were well off the pace but as we got to know the boat our speed rapidly improved. We were up against teams who regularly campaign these yachts on the professional circuit. Finally, with all the t’s crossed and the i’s dotted, we were ready to race.

The first race started at 11:00 am sharp on the 13th September, and what a wake up call we had!Out of 24 places we ended up in the 22nd place, but after three races on the same day, we gradually improved from a 22nd to 12th and finally to the 11th place.

Day 2 dawned bright and windy and we were hyped to get better results. After the three races on day one we were lying 17th with only 3 points separating positions 17 to 13th (16th and 17th were equal in points but were split by less good results in the last race). We had a fantastic start with race 2 and were approaching the 1st mark in the top 5. Things were looking good, but Newport Yacht Club crashed into our side, causing extensive but not debilitating damage.Even though Newport was completely in the wrong, our position was compromised and as a result we ended up in the 18th position and with a visibly shaken crew. In the next two races we got a 13th place which moved us slightly up the ranks to 16th place overall. The boat was then rushed to the repair docks where a crane lifted the boat out for repairs. The shore crew worked the entire night repairing the damage, which included beefing up a bulkhead. By 8:00 am the next morning our boat was re-launched and we were ready for the fight.

Day 3 again dawned with windy and cloudy conditions. We were determined to improve our results from the previous two days. We managed to take 11th place in the 1st race and finally managed to prove what we were capable of, by getting a 4th place. Unfortunately the wind became too strong and the rest of the day was cancelled. The Canadians were sailing extremely well and were in the 1st place overall with a healthy 4 point cushion above New York Yacht Club with Japan in third place.

On Day 4, the last day, we managed to take the 12th and 16th place. In the last race we took a gamble by sailing off using an all or nothing approach. At that stage we had managed to fight our way back to 13th place overall. Maybe we got a bit greedy in aiming for better positions. In yacht racing these gambles can pay off handsomely, but the exact opposite is also possible. Sometimes you either end up looking like a clever hero or a dumb villain.

In the end we had to be content with a 17th overall place. In hind sight, on the last day, we maybe should have rather protected our 13th position. It really is a case of knowing when to attack and when to consolidate.

The New York Yacht Club Invitational was an incredible experience to all of us, especially to experience how Americans do everything with such patriotic pride, how they love and respect their flag, their traditions and especially their sportsmen and sportswomen!

I am definitely going to try for the class of 2013.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGESChristo Schloms

Whatever I say here, can never do justice to the efforts delivered by an extremely dedicated staff complement. Qual-ity new appointments already added immense value within the operations. The drilling and blasting for the internal Natal and Gauteng operations have already delivered marked improvements in quality and efficiency. The value of working for reduced margins manifests in cost efficiency and being low cost producers. This is a very necessary survival strategy and ultimately the opportunists in our markets that do not show the same perseverance, fall by the wayside and affords the key players better margins once markets recover.I wish not only the staff of ACI a well deserved break, but also the rest of the Company who supports and helps us advance. Afrimat has so far succeeded in establishing an image of teamwork amongst our competitors and clients and the basis to improve on our synergy strategy is now stronger than ever before. I remain exited and optimistic about the medium term future and with the support of the ACI team, we will once again be successful in the New Year. Enjoy the family time in abundance and festivities in moderation.

I wish you all the deserved rest and a safe return.

Piërre du ToitDie jaar is verby.

Billy Paton

Dear Colleagues, as the year draws to a close, I want to thank my team, for their outstanding efforts during these tough times. No matter how difficult the circumstances or how unprecedented the nature of events has been this year, you stepped up and were there for our clients and for our Company.

This year has seen a dramatic turnaround from last year, with sales volumes de-clining. The writing was on the wall last year when our local newspapers reported about the cash flow woes of our Metropole. The result was that the Municipal Infrastructure budget was drastically reduced, resulting in very few new tenders.

At the beginning of 2011 it was clear that it was going to be a trying year. However, none of us could really predict just exactly how difficult the year would turn out.A lack of growth in the Western Cape combined with a very aggressive, and at times reckless approach from our competitors has put us under a considerable amount of pressure. To add to these problems our mobile contract work in the Free State and Northern Cape has almost come to an end and new contracts that we had hoped would replace this work, have yet to materialize. Despite these challenges we still managed to maintain a strong presence in the market and I am confident that 2012 will start to show signs of improvement albeit slow.

Notwithstanding the difficult market conditions, we managed to hold on to our valued customer base, focusing on all projects big or small, and as a result of this, we were still able to add value and contribute towards the profitability of our Company. While we can be proud of how we have emerged from the situation, we must never become complacent. It is possible to make mistakes, but when we do, the most important thing is to fix them quickly, to learn from them, and move on.

We pay tribute to the late Peter Corbin….how I miss his smile and good sense of humor. We think of and pray for his family during these festive times.

Five exercises we would have been better off without in 2011· Jumping on the bandwagon· Spinning your wheels· Adding Fuel to Fire· Jumping to Conclusions· Dragging your heels

Thank you to all for your hard work. It is an honor and a privilege to be part of this Afrimat team. “You make me proud to be here” Above all else this holiday season, please make sure to enjoy your time with your loved ones, friends and family and may the peace and joy of Christmas live in your heart all year long.

Enjoy the break and come back with fuelled tanks.

We have already secured mobile contract work for the new year, but to ensure we retain our firm hold in the Cape, good service and quality will require our full attention. We have shown on a number of occasions that our service is comparable if not better than most by supplying major contracts such as OHB Construction (Pty) Ltd -500m3, Isipani Construction (Pty) Ltd -350m3 and Level Floors (Pty) Ltd -300m3 all within a normal working day. It is this type of service that distinguishes us from our competitors.

Emphasis has been placed on our teams to improve service delivery and maintain high health and safety standards through continuous training initiatives.

The Employees were very proud when we reached the Afrimat DIFR target of below 2. This was achieved because of working safer and smarter within the construction environment. Health and Safety within the workplace is of utmost importance, it is not only a legal obligation but reflects the attitude, behaviour and culture of the Company and its valued employees. I would therefore appeal to everyone to apply caution at all times to ensure safety in the workplace. I know that 2012 will undoubtedly have its own set of challenges, but with the capabilities and dedication of the team, I am sure we will prosper.

In closing, I would like to wish all our staff and their families a pleasant and blessed Christmas. May the new year bring you joy and prosperity. Looking forward to seeing you in 2012.

With Glen Douglas now part of the family and with the team that indicated their competency, enthusiasm and loyalty it is clear that they will play a significant role in the future of Afrimat. A new dimension they bring to Afrimat is that while most of the Aggregates sites will be closed over the festive season, Glen Douglas will be performing at their peak to satisfy the metallurgic Dolomite market.

And always remember:“Jesus is the Reason for the Season”

Last year in my year end message I said that “The new year is going to be unique in its own. It will be demanding, different and the team will be challenged to new levels of character and creativity to optimise our performance”. In contrast to the Boks that lost the world cup in 2011, the Afrimat Aggregates Team rose to the occasion and per-formed exemplary despite all the messages of doom and gloom out there. History and the financials prove that we are the best at what we are doing!

Hendrik Verreynne“Dear Colleagues,

2011 was another eventful year for the Finance and ITBS divisions and many successes have been achieved. We were however saddened by the passing of Fayzil van Wyk following a motor vehicle accident.

In respect of financial administration the improvement of internal controls, establish-ment of separate financial administration centres for all operating regions, continuous

33.

I would like to thank all staff that worked so hard to achieve the results that we see. One must never stop focussing on cost control. As I always say “werk slimmer” – in other words, you must always be one step ahead of the opposition.

reduction of the number of legal entities, adoption by Afrimat Limited of integrated annual financial reporting and the incorporation of Glen Douglas into financial reporting processes are some of the highlights. Centralisation of the group’s salaries administration have been completed during the year and streamlining of payroll processes are well underway. Importantly the group’s debtors administration and credit control processes showed a marked improvement. We welcome Nico, Annalie, Roelien and Trudie, the finance team at Glen Douglas into the finance team, and wish them all the best with their important task.

IT and Business Systems divisions progressed well with the rollout of Winbridge and Accpac application systems and the implementation of the Qlikview analysis tool. Many hours of hard work by the project teams and users went into bedding down the various new systems and processes and assisting users to use the new systems effectively. We are starting to see a pleasing improvement in the quality of information generated and the use thereof by users and management at all levels.

Corporate governance remained an important focus area of management throughout the business and the establishment of an in-house internal audit department reflects Afrimat’s commitment thereto.

Our thanks to all our team members for their dedication and hard work during 2011. We continuously experience that there are no better recipe for success than teamwork, learning, standardisation and keeping our work simple – we need to have this in mind when we start the new year.
