This special issue addresses nonlinear systemmodels consid-ering the dynamical analysis, control approaches, and appli-cations in the fractional-order case and their applications toengineering. It involves modeling, applications, and controlfor nonlinear systems, such as mechanical and electrome-chanical ones. Five relevant contributions from researchersin different topics of nonlinear systems, describing originaltheoretical research as well as new experimental results, were published in the presented special issue (SI). The fivecontributions are summarized, next.
K. Rajagopal et al. analyzed the chaotic behavior usingbifurcation diagrams of horizontal platform systems (HPS)identifying the multistable parameter and investigated thecoexisting attractors of the HPS. The authors in the worktitled “Multistability in Horizontal Platform System withand without Time Delays” investigated the multistabilityexistence in time-delayed HPS, plotting the bifurcation of theautonomous HPS, and showed the multistability and coex-isting attractors. D. G. Bassinello et al. studied a nonlinearMEMS resonator, bringing the behavior of such system froma chaotic state to a periodic orbit, considering the time-delayed feedback control, and the slidingmode control, in thepaper entitled “Dynamical Analysis and Control of a ChaoticMicroelectromechanical Resonator Model”. J. Wang et al.discussed in detail the dynamical characteristics of a bladewith viscoelastic damping in the paper entitled “DynamicCharacteristics of Blade with Viscoelastic Damping Block
Based on Complex Eigenvalue Method”. The effects of var-ious parameters including thickness, storage modulus, lossfactor of viscoelastic damping block, and rotating speed onnatural frequency andmodal damping ratio of VE-bladewereconsidered. M.-H. Shih et al. considered the Bi-Tilt Isolator(BTI) composed of bi-tilt beveled substrate and slider in thepaper “Experimental Validation of Numerical Model for Bi-Tilt-Isolator”. The proposed mathematical model and BTIelement of GENDYN program were analyzed, using cubicpolynomial function of friction. The authors carried outfine simulation capability to assess the nonlinear isolationeffect of the structure installed with BTI. T. Qin et al. haveperformed a series of tests on characteristics of acousticemission sandstone under uniaxial, conventional, triaxialconditions and the unloading confining pressure path. Theyobserved in the paper with title “Experimental Study onMechanical and Acoustic Emission Characteristics of RockSamples under Different Stress Paths” that the failure modeof rock specimen was dominated by shear failure under theconventional triaxial stress path and the tension failure wasthe main form at a lower initial value of unloading confiningpressure. In addition, they showed that the shear failureis more prominent at a higher initial value of unloadingconfining pressure.
We hope that this special issue would be useful inrecent advances and developments in the areas of Dynamics,Control, and Modeling of Fractional-Order Systems and
