Thepurposeofthispaperisthreefold;toofferdetaileddataonthefrequencyof

theuseofthesefわrms,andtoexaminethedescriptiveadequacyofthemleabout

theseformswhichisgivenbyReszkiewicz(1966),Traugott(1972)andMitchell

(1985),and to examine the explanatory adequacy oflwata'S(1993,1998)

hypothesisaboutthesesyntacticfわrms.Asaresultoftheinvestigation,anew

ruleispresentedandarevisedhypothesistowardtheexplanationofthenewrule

isproposed.

1.序

古英語 (OldEnglish :OE)の制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式を扱った研究には記述的な

ものとしてReszkiewicz(1966),Traugott(1972),Mitchell(1985)があり,そこでは,関係

詞節や先行詞を含めて文中の各要素は,OEでは,それぞれの要素の統語的機能 (syntactic

function)にしたがうというよりもそれぞれの要素の質量 (mass)にしたがって配列される

と述べられている｡そして,OEでは制限的関係詞節構文としてなぜ関係詞節が先行詞と隣接

する形式と,関係詞節が先行詞から離れて文末に生じる形式という2つの形式の構文が普通に

用いられるのか,つまりこの2つの異なる形式の構文が OEで普通に使用されたという事実は

文法の中でどのように説明されるのかを考察したものとして岩田 (1993,1998)があり,この

事実はOEの並列構造 (parataxis)である制限的関係詞節構文は三次元統語構造を構成 し,

その構造が音韻解釈を受けて直線化される際にどのように分析されるかによって説明されると

いう仮説が提案されている｡OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式の研究に関するこのような

状況の中で,本稿では次の3つの点を目的とした考察を行う｡

(1) i.OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式を記述し説明するための言語資料がこれ

まで十分に提供されていないので,つまり,OEの制限的関係詞節構文のどの

形式のものがどの程度の頻度で使用されたかはこれまでまだ十分に提示されて

いないので,それを目的としてある程度の量の資料を提供すること｡

ii. 上述のように,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式を記述 したものとして

Reszkiewicz(1966),Traugott(1972),Mitchell(1985)があるが,その記述

が妥当なものかどうかを (1i)で言及した資料と統計を基に検討すること｡

iii.OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式についての記述を説明しようとしている

仮説として上述のように岩田 (1993,1998)があるが,その仮説の説明的妥当

性を (1i)で述べた資料と統計に基づいて検討すること｡

以下,まず第2節で,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式の記述に関する先行研究を概観 し,

第3節で (1日 に関係するTheAngloISaxon ChTT)nicleからの資料を提示する｡そして,

その資料に基づいて (1ii)と (1iii)に示した問題を第4節で検討する｡

2.先行研究

本節では,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式の記述に関する先行研究を概観する｡

Reszkiewicz(1966),小野 (1985),中尾 弓巳馬 (1990:60,210)で述べられているように,

関係詞節構文の統語形式に関して,OEでは,次の (2)のような非制限的関係詞節の場合だ

けでなく,制限的関係詞節の場合でも,関係詞節が先行詞と隣接する形式の構文だけでなく,

次の (3)のように,関係詞節が先行詞から離れて文末に生じる形式の構文つまり不連続構文lい

(discontinuousconstructions)がしばしば,あるいはきわめて普通に用いられた｡そして,

後者の不連続構文がOEの典型的な特徴である｡

この不連続構文つまり分離構文 (splitconstructions)は,Reszkiewicz(1966:322)による

と,OEの文要素の配列順序に関する (4)に示した内容の基本原理にしたがって作られたも

のである｡

(4)oEの文要素の配列は,基本的にあるいは通例,統語的機能よりむしろ文のそれぞ

れの要素の質量 (-大きさ (size)や重さ (weight))にしたがうD

この原理にしたがって,OEの文要素は,基本的には,軽い要素は節 (clause)の左側に,重

い要素は節の右側に置かれる｡そして,この原理は最優先のもので,通常の散文では厳密に守

られた (ibid.(1966:324))0

次に,岩田 (2003)でも述べたように,Traugot(1972)によれば,OEでこの分離形式の構

文 が用 い られ たの は,OEで は中英語 (Middle English:ME)や近代 英語 (Modern

English:ModE)のように文要素を主にその統語上同じ性質を持つものはひとまとめにする

(たとえば,同一の動詞に対 して2つ (以上)の対等の主語がある場合はそれらの主語をすべ

て主語の位置に置 く)というルールよりも,要素の長 さ (length),大 きさ,機能負担量

(functionalload)にしたがって並べたからである｡このように,Traugot(1972)ち (4)(2)とほぼ同じ主旨のことを述べている｡

最後に,Mitchell(1985:§2289)によれば,OEでは関係詞節は先行詞と先行詞を限定する

語または句からしばしば分離され,ModEでは通常避けられる形式が用いられた｡関係詞節と

先行詞のこの分離はMitchell(1985:§2297)によるとOE以前の並列構造の名残 りである｡

以上,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式についての先行研究の記述は次のようにまとめ

られる｡

(5) i.OEでは関係詞節と先行詞が隣接する形式のほかに,関係詞節と先行詞が分離

している形式がしばしば用いられた｡

ii.OEの制限的関係詞節構文として分離形式のものが普通に用いられた理由は,

文要素を並べる際に,OEでは,その要素の統語的機能にしたがうことよりそ

の要素の質量にしたがうことの方が重視されたからということと,制限的関係

詞節構文はOE以前は並列構造をしていたからである｡

この (5i)の分離形式の制限的関係詞節構文がOEでは ｢しばしば｣用いられたとは,分離

されていない制限的関係詞節構文と比べてどの程度の頻度のことを言うのかを,そして,(5

ii)のOEの一般的傾向とされるこのルール (- (4))が果たしてどの程度一般的なもので

あるのかを,OEの散文 TheAngloISaxonChronicleの分析に基づいて次の第3節と第4節で

検討 してみる｡

3.資料

本稿では,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式に関する資料を収集する文献として英語散

文の歴史書であるTheAnglo-SaxonChronicle(Thorpe(1964;vol.1))を用いる｡そして,

収集した資料はOEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式に関する以下の区分にしたがって分類す

る｡

(6) A.制限的関係詞節と先行詞が分離 している構文

B.制限的関係詞節と先行詞が分離 していない構文

第2節で紹介したように,Reszkiewicz (1966)とTraugott (1972)とMitchell(1985)は

OE (特にOEの散文)において,文要素はその統語的機能よりもそれぞれの要素の質量にし

たがって配列されると述べている｡本節では,この記述の妥当性を第3節で示したOEの散文

TheAngloISaxonChronicleの資料を用いて検討するo即ち,先行詞をA,制限的関係詞節を

Rと略記すると,非分牡形式の制限的関係詞節構文 ｢A-RH .｣において,A-Rの質量と

‥ .の部分を占める要素の質量を比較し,分離形式の制限的関係詞節構文 ｢A一日 .-R｣

それでは,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式を上記の岩田 (1993,1998)の仮説によっ

て説明することの妥当性を本稿の第3節の資料に基づいて検討してみる｡まず,第3節で示さ

れているOEの非分離形式の制限的関係詞節構文の使用数と分離形式の制限的関係詞節構文の

使用数は次のように再述される｡

このようにTheAngloISaxonChronicleには制限的関係詞節構文が554例あり,そのうちおよ

そ8割 (448例)がA-R型の非分離形式のもので,およそ2割 (106例)がA-. .-R型の(12)分離形式のものである｡このことは,OEの分離形式の制限的関係詞節構文は決 して例外的な

ものではなく,したがってOEの制限的関係詞節構文にはなぜ非分離型のものと分離型のもの

があるかということは文法で説明されるべき問題であることを示している｡この間題に対する

説明として提案された上記の岩田 (1993,1998)の説明は4.1.節の末尾に (156)としてま

とめられたOEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式に関する記述を正確にかつ厳密に捉えること

はできない｡つまり (先行詞+)関係詞節が重くても関係詞節が分離されない事例が上述のよ

うに約半数あるという事実を上記の仮説では適切に説明できない｡以上のことを考慮 して,本

稿では,岩田 (1993,1998)の上記の仮説を修正した次の仮説を提案する｡つまり,より妥当

な仮説は,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の三次元 S構造が次の (163)だとすると,それがLC

のⅩ1に関してどのように分析されるかについては,岩田 (1993,1998)の説明を修正した次

の (164)ようなものであると考えられる｡

つまり,OEでは,制限的関係詞節の構造は上記の (159)の型のものであり,その構造に対

する三次元S構造 (163)が,(160)に示したLCにしたがって適用される音韻解釈規則によ

って直線的な音声形式に変換される際に,NP+ †(NP-先行詞 ;†-制限的関係詞節)の質量がβ(β=CPlにおいて先行詞の後部を占めるすべての要素)の質量より大きい場合は,LCのⅩ1をα -NP(α =CPlにおいて先行詞の前部を占めるすべての要素)と分析するかα -

Np-βと分析するかは随意的で,そうでない場合は,LCのⅩ1を (一般に)α-NPと分析したと仮定する｡そして,この仮説によって,OEの関係詞節構文の統語形式についての4.1.

節末尾の (156i)と (156ii)の記述が説明されると提案する｡

5.まとめ

本稿では,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の統語形式について第1節の (1)の (i),(ii),

(iii)に示 した3つの点を目的とした｡(1)の (i)の目的のために本稿ではOEの散文

TheAnglo-SaxonChronicleを用いた.そこには,PEと異なり,制限的関係詞節の場合でも,

関係詞節が先行詞と隣接する形式の構文だけでなく,関係詞節が先行詞から離れて文末に生じ

る形式の構文がしばしば見られる｡この資料を用いて,OEの制限的関係詞節構文 ｢先行詞 一

制限的関係詞節 .‥ ｣と ｢先行詞 - ‥ -制限的関係詞節｣において,先行詞+制限的関係

詞節の部分の質量が ‥ .の位置にある要素の質量を上回っている場合,どの程度の割合で関

係詞節が分離されるかについて調べてみると,本稿の調査ではおよそ41%であった｡そして,

分離形式の事例のほとんどすべて,つまりおよそ95%の事例では先行詞+制限的関係詞節の部

分の質量が ‥ .の位置にある要素の質量を上回っているが,先行詞+制限的関係詞節の部分

の質量が ‥ .の位置にある要素の質量を上回っていても,そのうちの59%の事例では関係詞

節が分離していない｡つまり,先行詞+制限的関係詞節の部分の質量が .‥ の位置にある要

素の質量を上回っていてもそのうちの59%の事例では文要素が要素の質量にしたがって配列さ

れているのではなく,要素の統語的機能にしたがって配列されていると考えられる｡その結莱,

oEの文要素はその統語的機能 よりもその要素の質量にしたがって配列 されるという

Reszkiewicz (1966)等の記述は少なくともOEの制限的関係詞節構文については妥当なもの

とは考えにくい (cr. (1)の (ii))｡むしろ,OEの制限的関係詞節構文の形式については

本稿での調査にしたがえば,次のように記述される｡

(165)(- (156))OEの制限的関係詞節構文について,

i.先行詞+制限的関係詞節の部分の質量が ‥ .の部分の質量より大

きい場合は,関係詞節が分離しない形式も,それが分離する形式も

用いられる｡

ii.先行詞+制限的関係詞節の部分の質量が .日 の部分の質量より小

さい場合は,関係詞節が分離する形式は (一般に)用いられない｡

上記の記述に対する説明として提案された岩田 (1993,1998)の仮説は正確で厳密なものと

は言えない (cr. (1)の (ili))｡その結果,本稿では,岩田 (1993,1998)の仮説を修正 し

た次の仮説を提案した｡つまり,より妥当な仮説は,OEの関係詞節構文の三次元S構造が次

の (166)だとすると,それがLC(- (160))のⅩ1に関してどのように分析されるかについ

ては,岩田 (1993,1998)の説明を修正した (167)のようなものであると考えられる｡

ると述べている｡この記述の ｢好まれる｣とはTraugott(1992)がどの程度の使用頻度のこと

を言っているのかは不明であるが,本稿の調査では,上記のように,｢先行詞+関係詞節｣がその右側を占める要素より重くても関係詞節が分離しない事例が半数つまり全体の約59%あった｡

そ して,同様なことがOEの等位接続構文や同格名詞句構文についても言える｡(cf.岩田

(2003,2004))

(7) 岩田 (1993,1998)でも紹介したように.中尾 ･児馬 (1990:60)によると,言語類型論の

説明によれば,(157a)から (157d)の史的発達は英語のみに見られる現象ではなく,すべて

の言語に見られる ｢普遍的推移｣であるという｡すなわち,すべての関係詞節構造は (157a)

の構造から (157d)の構造へと変化する方向にあり,言語や時代によってその連続体の中のど

の時点にあるかが異なるのである｡

(8) Reszkiewicz (1966)参照｡さらに,岩EE](1993,1998)でも述べられているように,小野

(1985:79-80)によれば,OEにおいて,関係詞がsepeの場合は,その関係詞節は長い (-

語数が多い)節になる傾向があり,peやseに導かれる関係詞節よりも先行詞から分離される

度合いが高い｡

(9) 岩田 (1991,1992,1998,2003,2004)で示 したように,音韻的に重い要素の方が後置され

る傾向にあることはOEの等位接続構文と同格名詞句構文についても言える｡

(10) 岩田 (1993,1998)でも述べられているように,OEの制限的関係詞節は,このように,等

位構造の一方の等位項 (-CP2)として表示されたものであるが,文の要素間の論理的関係を

解釈するLF部門に入ってすぐ,CP2は,次の (i)のように,CPl内の先行詞 (-NP.)と

構成素を成すように組み込まれて,最終的にNPiに対する制限節 (-NPiに対する従属節)と

しての解釈を与えられると考えられる｡

(ll) つまり,岩田 (1993,1998)の分析では,分離構文は ｢先行詞+関係詞節｣から関係詞節が

分離したものではない｡さらに,岩田 (1993,1998)でも述べたように,OEやMEの制限的

関係詞節が先行詞から分離している形式の構文がいわゆる ｢名詞句からの外置｣という操作に

よって生成されたものでないということを支持する議論が中尾 ･児馬 (1990:2091210)で与え

(12) 岩 田 (1993,1998)で も述 べ た よ うに,小 野 (1985:79)に よる と,OEのhomiletic

関係詞節が先行詞の直後に続 くものが70%で,関係詞節が先行詞から分離 しているものが30%

である｡
